No it doesn't. I LIKE long file names because they can be MUCH more exact and informative as to just what the damn file actually is. I can't stand being limited to only 8 characters and no spaces or special symbols (or even just the basic keyboard-listed ones!).

Max Payne is pretty good; reminds me of Kingpin but without the excessive swearing and location-specific body damage, but MP's environments are MUCH more interactive and its graphics blow away Kingpin (and most other current games): http://tnlc.com/eep/compare/mentions.html#maxpayne for more info.

Dude, BBSes are so early 1990s. They're, like, obsolete d00d. I dropped them as soon as the Web became popular in the mid-90s. I stopped running my "Star Trek: The Next Generation On-Line" BBS around the time TNG went off the air (I was SO pissed to hear it had been cancelled supposedly because the actors wanted more money). <sigh> Too bad Enterprise doesn't look that interesting either...Paramount REALLY fucked up when they cancelled TNG and put on Slop (Deep) Space Nine and Boringer--er, Voyager...and the TNG movies haven't been much to be interested about either. :/

Of course you don't, newbie twit. Do you even know what a BLANK line is? It's a line without any text. Ever used a word processor? Ever used a text editor? Ever WRITTEN a letter with a pen? Ever take a graphics design class? Ever actually THINK before doing things? Hell, ever actually THINK at all? Didn't think so...perhaps you should start. Oh, so you ARE renewing now? Yet another closed betaAug 21, 2001, 9:25am
The problem is that Roland doesn't even ask for these specs to begin with (not that he seems to know what to DO with the specs once he has them ANYWAY...). Standard quality assurance testing dictates that ALL system specs are known BEFORE testing even begins. Then if those specs are changed, no matter HOW slight, the CHANGED specs are included in the bug report.
Submitted bugs also need to be reproducible and EXACT occurance/setting (what was going on at the time of the bug). If a crash/hang occurs, the crash details should be posted along with any other debug info (especially if it's reproducable; then, in AW's case, the ini file "debug" section should be enabled and the dump included in the bug report). Also, bug databases (Lotus Notes, etc) are used to track bugs, let other testers know what bugs have been found, fixed, etc). While AW 3.1's testing had a makeshift bug list (that had screwy formatting most of the time) it still didn't let testers update it with other things they found or whatever. The beta newsgroup is limited because it doesn't actually create a list of the bugs found; Roland (or whoever) still needs to manually make (and continually update) a list, which takes time away from actually FIXING bugs; hence the need for someone in charge of all that. In short, AWC needs an actual test manager or "lead tester" that can manage all the testers and report to Roland (the "lead programmer"). This is STANDARD in the computer industry and which something AWC needs to learn how to do if they want to EFFECTIVELY and PROPERLY test AW. This is yet another reason why I get so pissed at AWC's incompetence; they just don't know what they're doing...and it shows in their floundering stock price (still around $1) and continually slowly developing product: AW. AW has already lost a LOT of important older citiens like Little Bull, Grover, Dataman, Rjinswand, Dean (Challagar), Spring Dew, etc, etc. AW's worldbuilding community has really gone to the shits in the past couple years because of it, too... :/

Heh, dude, I've been in AW a LONG time (over 4 years) and HAVE had discussions with Rick, Roland, Shamus, HamFon, and even Protag (tho not many) about AW and its future. I filed a Better Business Bureau consumer complaint when Meta, Mars, and Atlantis didn't open when paid citizenship took effect because AWC PROMISED they would (they were opened about a month later). I've taken down my RW site in protest for being banned from AW simply for talking about GEL. I've emailed companies AWC has "teamed up with" in business relationships (as per their press releases) in order to clue them in to AWC's business practices and customer interaction (or lack thereof). What else...eh, just check my AW history page (http://tnlc.com/eep/aw/history.html).
I've done a LOT for being behind a computer, thank you. The point is: what has RYAN done for AW compared to me? Not much, if anything except caused a stir in these newsgroups by acting like an ignorant newbie kid. <shrug> [View Quote] > Hmm... let's assess your supposed value to the community, shall we? > > 1. Uh, where've YOU been lately, Ananas? There hasn't been much evolution, new ideas, or enthusiasm in AW for a while now...the newsgroups used to be a LOT more interesting, informative, and technical. But then a lot of good people left and they turned into shit with all the Juno users and other crap. There are FAR too many kids in AW and not enough SERIOUS people into worldbuilding and objectmaking--THAT is what's really keeping AW going: the hope that it will someday be worthy enough to make some REAL interactive entertainment with (i.e. games, and not the shit "games" AW current has; I mean action and action-adventure games et al equal to that of Tomb Raider, Trespasser, Half-Life, Thief, Deus Ex, No One Lives Forever, Max Payne, etc, etc). AW needs to actually be versatile enough to even BEGIN to create games like these.
Right now AW is still too "artsy" to do any REAL game development with it...and while game development is not the only possible use for AW, I believe it's the only real use that will ever get any return investment for AWC and world owners/builders. For example, people could pay for entry into game worlds since the world rights list can allow selective entry. Or everyone could enter but be restricted to certain areas ("demo" areas if you will) and a bot (blech) could control passage through certain points or something. But before all that happens AW needs to add more gamelike features like true avatar/player character moves besides "walking" and "running" like jumping (among many others, but jumping alone would offer a lot more possibilities for environment interaction). Better physics (avatars need more weight so they don't bounce and bound down slopes/stairs), collision detection (avatars NEED to be able to ride things and "stick" to moving things without having to move to stay on things; avatars need to slide along vertical polygons instead of just "sticking" to them), being able to pick up and drop objects (not necessarily throw ala Thief, Deus Ex, or even Trespasser, but of course that would be great), etc, etc, etc. AW has a LOT of potential, but with only one true programmer (Roland, but one more on the way in a couple weeks, supposedly), development is slow. Also, Rick and JP still don't seem like they know what to DO with AW. They've tried chatting and building (which work to a limited degree, but there needs to be more), e-commerce didn't pan out, their advertising model is flawed (see my past "subtle advertising" threads, et al), distance education isn't happening (probably because of the lack of interactivity--see gamelike features above), and what games AW DOES have aren't that complex and are fairly simple-minded (board/card games, some rather pathetic "RPGs", etc). AW needs a marketing and development SHIFT towards something that has been proven to be a viable industry for the past 20 years or so: gaming. I shouldn't need to quote sales figures and all that crap, but, trust me, gaming is hot and it ain't going away ANY time soon. AW has the potential to really revolutionize how 3D games are created by means of the "multi-user level editor" model I see AW one day becoming (hopefully soon). But, really, AW would be a LOT more than a simple game development tool; it would (and basically IS) a holodeck ala Star Trek: The Next Generation and beyond. And if you've watched any of the Star Trek's starting with TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, you should be VERY aware of the potential holodecks can have. It's simply a matter of applying that 24th century "fantasy" to our 21st century REALITY...and making it happen. I see it happening. It WILL happen. It's just a matter of will AW BE the next step towards MAKING it happen. [View Quote] > Freaking out new community members does NOT help AW > very much. It will be a community of elderly people, > some cobol freaks and some who always dream about the > good old times, but no evolution, no new ideas and > no enthusiasm anymore. > [View Quote] Sorry everyone...Sep 2, 2001, 11:52am
I could have just as easily compared myself to Donna or practically anyone else in AW for that matter. All I'm saying (and trying to prove) is that I have done a DAMN lot for AW and it's so-called "community" over the years and would appreciate it if newbies took the time to learn the ropes before acting stupid like they OH SO OFTEN do. I don't care if the newbie is 10 or 100--they BETTER get on the up-and-up on things or they're gonna get shitkicked by me if they're lame enough.
