jerme // User SearchOT: Declining US DollarDec 1, 2004, 2:29am
Problem is... once the currency collapses, the gold could be worth all
the money in that curreny you want (543 billion marks, for example)... but it does you no good to sell it because a) no one has enough money to buy it at such an inflated price and 2) even if you do sell it... now you've got a lot of worthless currency on your hands. If the dollar were to collapse, you'd be better off just hanging on to your cold and waiting for the economy to recover. You've got to remember that even if you sell your gold and become a billionair, the price of everything else is going to be so inflated too, that your billion dollars isn't going to get you very far. *If* however, you sold the gold, and hung on to the money *and* the currency made some dramatic recovery, your money would be worth a lot more.... But that'd probably take a while.... You're right though, it probably is a very good idea to invest in something more 'real' than the stock market. Companies come and go, but gold/silver isn't going anywhere. If something should indeed happen, you'd be a lot better off having gold. -Jeremy [View Quote] Property search down??Dec 12, 2004, 1:44am
How recent are his builds?
The property search is not done in real time. ActiveWorlds Inc. takes a "snap shot" of everything in the world, puts it in a file, and sends it to Ima. This file is then used to populate a database, and the property search scripts use that database to locate your builds quickly. The problem is that the property search database for AW doesn't tend to get updated very frequently, so what the search returns can be very different from what's actually in the world. So, check the dates on those builds. Looks like the last time the property search was updated was "June 8, 2004, 10:11 am" so anything built after that isn't going to show up in the search results. -Jeremy [View Quote] Property search down??Dec 12, 2004, 6:25pm
"a significant amount of work"......
It's that *that* hard, is it? I mean, I do this for AWTeen (the long way) at the end of every month. How hard is it to copy the files over and compress them? I realize it's a very large file. But, how difficult is it to create a propdump? If you ask me, there's got to be a faster way of updating it. My first suggestion would just be to take a propdump of the world every month. But since that seems to be too difficult, my next suggestion would be to use multiple bots on multiple systems to query the world (this would be much faster than just using one bot) and update a single search database. -Jeremy [View Quote] > Jeremy is correct. It's a significant amount of work for AW to generate > a few propdump file for us, so we typically only update it twice a year or > so. > > Please let us know the dates of your friend's builds. > Thanks, > - Ima > [View Quote] Property search down??Dec 13, 2004, 1:41pm
There is... That's where I got the "June 8, 2004" from. It's the date
the propdump was completed. [View Quote] Property search down??Dec 13, 2004, 1:49pm
Those are all just lame excuses....
First, the AW servers run on solaris. So, the fastest way would not be to use the admin tool. That's actually the slowest way, (would be just like using a bot). The fastest way is to run the command line propdump tools on the .idx and .dat files in the server's backup directory. This would, no doubt, generate a several GB propdump file. I can compress AWTeen's 1.5 GB propdump down to 173mb (89% packed). So... I'm sure, using a little bit of compression, they could get the file down to a managable size. T1's are plenty fast for transfering gigs of information. I can download the whole of AWTeen's propdump in less than an hour on a cable modem. I'm sure AW's T1 line could take the stress. Besides, their servers are in a data center somewhere now, aren't they? Once again, I think it's just a bunch of excuses. These are jobs you can set running overnight, come back the next day and then do the next step. It's not really that hard, or time consuming. -Jeremy [View Quote] > Try around a day. Also, transferring the few GB of the propdump over a > T1... Requires a huge amount of work, bandwidth, and time. > [View Quote] Mass MessageDec 12, 2004, 6:29pm

My bet is for the penguins...
They should be using linux in the first place... Then we wouldn't have this problem; the penguins or the crashing servers. [View Quote] email awDec 15, 2004, 3:39am
Indeed they do.
Sometimes I just find myself asking "Who cares?". I come to the newsgroups looking for useful information. Instead, as Joker put it, it's nothing but a bunch of soaps. At least the world builders group is somewhat better about having useful stuff..... Even the guy who writes nothing more than "I host worlds for free" is providing more useful information (however vauge it may be) than the "I'm sorry I accused you of stealing"..... Save it, really... -Jeremy [View Quote] Tourist World now closedDec 25, 2004, 5:46am
I have to say that tourist builds were never really meant to be
protected from deletion in any way...(fancy bots, or no fancy bots) hence why tourists should register and become citizens. So, if I were you, I wouldn't be too worried about people deleting tourist builds. -J [View Quote] Beta NGDec 27, 2004, 2:44pm
I don't know... I hadn't noticed that.
But, now that you mention it... After refreshing the ng list, I can see the group too. Probably wasn't intended, and once they discover it, they'll probably disable our access. But, nevertheless, it is a nice peak into what's going on with the development. -Jeremy [View Quote] Beta NGDec 29, 2004, 2:16pm
I'm not sure how long you've been around... but I'd say that the Tech
Talks with Roland used to be plenty of "community feedback". It gave us a look into where the software was going, what Roland was working on, and his opinions about different matters. Now, unless you're a part of 'elite' little beta group, you've got virtually no chance of ever speaking with a member of the dev team. (They're not good about returning e-mails, in general...) On that note... from the looks of it, the beta newsgroup was a joke. People report problems left and right, and never get so much as an acknowledgement for anyone at AWI. There's no "I found XXXX in build 5xx"... then from a developer "OK, I think the problem is with YYY, I've tired ZZZZ to fix it... test it again with this new build". That *rarely* ever happens. ENZO posting here was great, for a while... Now it seems only only responds to the most non-sensical posts, only bring more nonsense to the thread. Like he's afraid to take on the big questions (i.e. this one..) Anyways... enough of my ranting. I agree, anyhow... that there's no community feed back. -Jeremy [View Quote] AWTeen Team Building ContestDec 28, 2004, 5:54pm
Hi,
Just wanted to drop everyone a quick line about the building contest going on in AWTeen. Registration is open now through Dec. 31st. Check out all the details at http://www.awteen.com/team_build.shtml Regards, JerMe Gk's ? LOLDec 28, 2004, 9:04pm
I definitly agree... Lighten up.
If your kids go to public school, or even watch any ammount of TV, they're bound to be exposed to stuff much worse than santa taking a dump down a chimney... Just because it's not "g-rated" and bland doesn't mean it's God aweful and kids shouldn't see it. Kids have to grow up eventually too, so there's gotta be some point where you decide its OK to expose them to that sorta stuff. Might as well be now rather than later. You're not doing any kid a favor by sheltering them. My opionion... take it or leave it... -Jeremy [View Quote] current e-mail for MrBruceJan 10, 2005, 3:36am

Not to be mean, but you could start by sounding a little more
professional (i.e. learning some grammar...) "I can host there worlds".... There, their, and they're.... Each word is pronounced the same, but has a very different meaning. There - a place, like "over there" Their - a possesive, like "it is their world" they're - a contraction for "they are"... as in "they're cool". So... your sentence should be "I can host their worlds". Learn the differences, and try to sound educated. :-) -J [View Quote] Homopobic Gatekeeper?Jan 26, 2005, 6:54pm
You guys are all about pissing off some GK's aren't you....
Here's a suggestion... Leave the gate to the tourists, and go find somewhere better to chat. Let the GK's and retarded acting (most of them, not all) tourists to do their thing. Pick a world where there aren't uptight eject-happy people standing around all the time. Just my personal opinion.... This is pretty ridiculous though.... -J [View Quote] Homopobic Gatekeeper?Jan 27, 2005, 4:13am
Haha... way to play the "thoughtcrime" card.
I just wonder how many people know where that came from.... -J [View Quote] Homopobic Gatekeeper?Jan 27, 2005, 3:57pm
No, that was a movie called "Minority Report". That's not where the
comment came from. The comment came from (as usul 2 explained) the book "1984" by George Orwell. In this book, the government basicly controlled everything and "thoughtcrime" was a punsihable offense. See: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0451524934/qid=1106848309/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-1026980-6267242?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 Here's the editorial review: "Outside, even through the shut window pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere." The year is 1984; the scene is London, largest population center of Airstrip One. Airstrip One is part of the vast political entity Oceania, which is eternally at war with one of two other vast entities, Eurasia and Eastasia. At any moment, depending upon current alignments, all existing records show either that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and allied with Eastasia, or that it has always been at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. Winston Smith knows this, because his work at the Ministry of Truth involves the constant "correction" of such records. "'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'" In a grim city and a terrifying country, where Big Brother is always Watching You and the Thought Police can practically read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows the Party's official image of the world is a fluid fiction. He knows the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization that alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of every liberating human pursuit from reasoned inquiry to sexual passion. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be. Newspeak, doublethink, thoughtcrime--in 1984, George Orwell created a whole vocabulary of words concerning totalitarian control that have since passed into our common vocabulary. More importantly, he has portrayed a chillingly credible dystopia. In our deeply anxious world, the seeds of unthinking conformity are everywhere in evidence; and Big Brother is always looking for his chance. --Daniel Hintzsche--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. I skimmed over all your ranting and BS about gor.... And I went on to
looking around the rest of your site... I found this pretty interesting: http://www.cyberwolfman.com/persona_non_grata_outerworlds.htm Specifically this one... -------------------------------------- holleewood (citnumber: 5389) Came into ThisIsIt on 02-21-2005, and wandered around the world and ignored people when we tried to talk to him, even going so far as to try seven different languages. Still moving around, and ignoring people like some kind of rude snob, we teleported him to another world after suggesting that if he's going to be rude, he should do it in another world. He came back and still ignored us when we tried talking to him, but then finally said something and immediately left: -------------------------------------- I find this incredibly funny. As a caretaker in AWTeen, do you think I should eject everyone who comes in, wonders around, but doesn't say anything?? How is that rude in the first place? If the guy doesn't want to talk, he doesn't have to. He could have gone afk, or maybe he just wasn't feeling social... Point is, just because someone doesn't chat it up with you, doesn't make them rude. But, that's not the half of it... You go on to proclaim... "If your name is here, it is likely because you acted sadistically and cruel to somebody." Then, take for instance the story bout "Sugarfoot" deleting his cache. He (and holleewood alike) was abviously a new user... you could try being a little nicer and having some more patience. Besides that, is it really necessary to put a little story up about everyone who enters your world and isn't perfectly manored? Don't you have anything better to do than write all that garbage? You need some help... seriously. -Jeremy [View Quote] AW Mapper: Friendly ReminderMar 22, 2005, 3:22am
Doubt it...
At this point, you'd be better off getting a few bots together and taking your own remote propdump. Yes, I know how incredibly long that would take... But you've gotta admit, it'd be faster than waiting on AWI........ -J [View Quote] Early end to isolationMar 30, 2005, 2:17pm

Strike... Have to disagree on this one.
Linux/Unix machines beat windows out on simply uptime alone. My server's current uptime: [jerme at www ]$ uptime 09:43:13 up 314 days, 15:20, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 Let me see your windows machine do that.... My expirence shows that on identical/equivalent hardware, windows machines will need to be rebooted at least once a week to maintain stablility. After about a week (depending upon load/use), memory leaks and corruption take over... Where as on Linux, the machine can run indefinitly. I have yet to *ever* see a windows machine with an uptime of over a year. This is due namely to the fact that everytime you install a security update or a new piece of software, you have to reboot the whole system. However, on linux it's not uncommon for most machines to have uptimes of a year or more. Don't get me started on performance and security.... Microsoft looses hands down, anyway you look at it. -Jeremy [View Quote] Leaving AW SoonApr 4, 2005, 2:25pm
I have to agree with you whole heartedly...
I feel the need to correct one minor thing though. TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is not a "Microsoft thing". TCO is a term used in mainly in the computer/technology industry (but other industries as well) to refer to the total cost of purchasing, installing/implimenting, traning users, and maintaining/expanding/scaling the system throughout it's anticipated life. So, rather than just looking at upfront costs, TCO looks at how much a piece of technology will cost to buy, impliment, and keep running (i.e. pay a techie to keep it running). My bet would be that you're refering to the adds that Microsoft has been running lately which claim Window's TCO is lower than the TCO of linux. They're trying to say that it costs *more* to keep a linux system running and maintained than a Windows system. Granted that it is more complex to maintain a linux system (most of it doesn't have any pretty window's interface dumbing it down), it does require a more skilled administrator. However, when you add in all the hidden costs of Windows, somehow I doubt the TCO is less than linux. My guess is that Microsoft funded the research behind these ads and that it's noting more than propaganda in a loosing battle microsoft is fighting. Indepent research suggests that the most popular web server in use today is Apache running on (surprise!) linux..... Eat that microsoft and IIS. -Jeremy > I realise the hike in Cit costs is part of it. Also there is a Microsoft > thing out called TCO, Totla Cost of Ownership. They claim Windows is so > much less yet Linux on the whole is free to get, and install, Spend > hundreds of dollars on Windows and watch it crash on a regular basis. Leaving AW SoonApr 4, 2005, 6:56pm
>The question is, why?
Because I like to know that my OS is quality enough to handle it. If it always dies after 3 days of uptime, or had to be restarted everytime I turn around, then it's no where near a stable as linux. Which, as we've proven, can run for virtually limitless periods of time. >Have to love ye olde 9 bit security attributes on linux and unix eh? >Compared to MS's PID EFS cert system, a full set of primary and operational >rights... It literally blows Linux out the water. Guess you haven't seen SE Linux. http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/ Read up. This version of linux can blow windows out of the water on security anyday.... This just in from bowen: "Feel free to post this from me, if I recall correctly, my 233 MHz machine that I put mandrake 10 on had an uptime for about 346 days before a thunderstorm tore it down. Try to do that with windows. ;)" -Jeremy [567] - Before you askApr 26, 2005, 7:22pm
