Property search down?? // Community

I am posting for a friend who lost his build and tried looking it up on
http://tangent.imatowns.com/awps/search.php

Even though he's typing in the correct cit #, its telling him he has no
builds, which is a crock since I am currently visiting one of them right
now. Any clues??? Is the website down or something? Is he doing something
wrong maybe? He's checked and triple checked to make sure he wasn't typoing
his cit #.

Would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks ;-"D

How recent are his builds?

The property search is not done in real time. ActiveWorlds Inc. takes a
"snap shot" of everything in the world, puts it in a file, and sends it
to Ima. This file is then used to populate a database, and the property
search scripts use that database to locate your builds quickly. The
problem is that the property search database for AW doesn't tend to get
updated very frequently, so what the search returns can be very
different from what's actually in the world.

So, check the dates on those builds. Looks like the last time the
property search was updated was "June 8, 2004, 10:11 am" so anything
built after that isn't going to show up in the search results.

Jeremy is correct. It's a significant amount of work for AW to generate
a few propdump file for us, so we typically only update it twice a year or
so.

Please let us know the dates of your friend's builds.
Thanks,
- Ima

"a significant amount of work"......

It's that *that* hard, is it?

I mean, I do this for AWTeen (the long way) at the end of every month.
How hard is it to copy the files over and compress them? I realize it's
a very large file. But, how difficult is it to create a propdump?

If you ask me, there's got to be a faster way of updating it. My first
suggestion would just be to take a propdump of the world every month.
But since that seems to be too difficult, my next suggestion would be to
use multiple bots on multiple systems to query the world (this would be
much faster than just using one bot) and update a single search database.

Knowing how huge and how the world server admin works, it would take
hours to propdump AW.. knowing that it has so much land, it's nuts.

Try around a day. Also, transferring the few GB of the propdump over a
T1... Requires a huge amount of work, bandwidth, and time.

There is... That's where I got the "June 8, 2004" from. It's the date
the propdump was completed.

Those are all just lame excuses....

First, the AW servers run on solaris. So, the fastest way would not be
to use the admin tool. That's actually the slowest way, (would be just
like using a bot). The fastest way is to run the command line propdump
tools on the .idx and .dat files in the server's backup directory.

This would, no doubt, generate a several GB propdump file. I can
compress AWTeen's 1.5 GB propdump down to 173mb (89% packed). So... I'm
sure, using a little bit of compression, they could get the file down to
a managable size.

T1's are plenty fast for transfering gigs of information. I can download
the whole of AWTeen's propdump in less than an hour on a cable modem.
I'm sure AW's T1 line could take the stress. Besides, their servers are
in a data center somewhere now, aren't they?

Once again, I think it's just a bunch of excuses. These are jobs you can
set running overnight, come back the next day and then do the next step.
It's not really that hard, or time consuming.

There's something else. I tried to get in and the password failed. I
used the one I use for Activeworlds. Do you have to get another one?

NOT your main active worlds password... use your PPW.

_never_ enter your main password anywhere except the login window of the
activeworlds program. (maybe you have to enter it for renewing, i dont
know?)

1.5GB? Wow... Uh, last propdump sent to ima was around 16GB. GZIP
(really thing only zipping application on a native solaris install) has
a compression rate of 71.1% on text. 16 * 1024^3 = 17179869184 Bytes *
..711 = 12214886989.824 / 1024^3 = 11.376GB... Over a T1, with a
theoritical speed of 1.54 mbps (never will this be achieved due to the
TCP/IP overhead, but lets pretend for a second.) Lets move GB to MB, so
11.376 * 1024 = 11649.024MB, 11649.024MB * 8 = 93192.192Mb. 93192.192Mb
by 1.54Mb/s works out to somewhere around 60514 seconds, which is 1008
minutes, or 16 hours. Theres 16 hours of time that there internet
connection is totally used up. But, lets think reality here, they're
running object servers, uniservers, worldservers, all off the same
connection, so lets be nice and throttle the speed down to 400kbps
(you'd be lucky to get that even). At 400kbps (I dont even get this
uploading at work to T1's, and where I work's on an OC8 on three
backbones), it would take 66 hours. 66 hours... thats a few days. This
isnt even taking the time it takes to dump the world (probably in excess
of 10 hours), then gziping it up. So, in total, it would take over a
few days to send a propdump of AW to ima.

Next.

T1 is 1.54 mbps? im getting 2.5mbps from my local Comcast cable company. but
im one or two blocks away from the Comcast building, is that a reason? they
were not even clear which type of connection it was, but i figured cable
since its a cable company. they call it High-Speed Internet and say its
100% Pure BroadbandT .. i dont see anywhere where it says it is cable, but i
know it is not DSL, i didnt think cable can go that fast, can it?

receiving speeds.

I'm a good distance from my CO, and Im getting 3.5Mbps on my cable
modem. T1 is slow, but steady. It's got a good upload stream, so is
good for business.
