Contacts Online

Oct 20, 2004, 6:25am
[View Quote] AWI does keep a backup of your contacts list, just not your teleports list.

I have come back from a complete format... In-fact, I have come back
with a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on a new hard drive and a new
installation of the ActiveWorlds browser and have all my contacts on my
citizen account.

[View Quote] I agree fully with this idea. Wpu;d be like the Yahoo Messenger, MSN,
AIM and ICQ contact lists. Good thing if you have lots of contacts that
they scroll off your contacts list also. So you can minimize some groups
and only maximize those you want to see.

Alphaworld Community Core Staff

Oct 20, 2004, 6:42am
[View Quote] Those are *your* personal opinions, not particularly ours. Please do not
assume and speak on behalf of all ;o)

AW world has been going the way it is for many, many years with only a
few upgrades. You see, we now have a huge cell limit and people still
come up with complaints about something.

> None of you guys at AWI seem to be up to the task, so how about setting up a

And you are that particular individual who has been in AW long enough to
know what to do? Or been in AWTeen long enough to known what to do?

> It worked in AWTeen. It worked in AWRPG. Why can't it be passed along to
> Alphaworld?

Sounds like a good idea and all, but AW is a historical world where
mostly the oldies enter to build their builds, and towns. Each town has
their *own* community and they run their *own* events.

There is a world called AWCC which manages many things pertaining to the
ActiveWorlds browser in general as well as the AW world... There use to
be object competitions and certain objects had been added to the AW
Object Path. There is still an events calendar, but this is for the
whole ActiveWorlds community as a whole.

I believe Justin was the one that got the rock1.rwx etc objects added to
the object path, LOL. Now that was a while ago.

Objects that are in the AW Object Path need to be specific, and perfect.
Many world owners use this object path and having laggy objects and junk
like in AWTeen would put the path to shame really.

We have the Megapath as world owners which has more flexibility for
adding objects and textures I suppose.

Enough of my blabbering ;o)

ActiveWorlds Windows Profiles?

Oct 24, 2004, 9:52am
Hello,

Small wish, but something that would be useful.

ActiveWorlds supports Windows XP to a minimum. For instance, I can't run
ActiveWorlds on two Windows user accounts at the same time (unless of
course I install two different instances of the ActiveWorlds browser;
but who really wants to bother with that?).

Also, a users settings is not remembers per account, instead, it is
remembered on the browser under one profile.
For example, my girlfriend also uses the ActiveWorlds browser on her own
Windows XP Account, problem is, when I go back to use ActiveWorlds on my
own account, instead of being in my Domingo Avatar in AWGate, I am faced
with a genie female avatar!

Perhaps have different profiles/settings per Windows XP account, instead
of relying to load ActiveWorlds on one .ini file for every user of a
Windows system.

I found this to also be a problem when having *remember password*
enabled. A user on another account would automatically sign in as me ;o)

Password

Oct 24, 2004, 9:56am
Hello again,

Another wish, would be to have better password options for the user
accounts.

Currently, capital letters are not recognized in passwords, which is a
feature which would raise security for accounts quite a bit. For
example, the password "example" would be a completely different password
to "EXAmpLE" and much harder to guess.

Also, there is a 12 character limit to passwords. How about raising that
to, oh, say, 30? Not many, but some of us use USB keys to remember such
long, secure passwords we happen to generate ;o)

chat relay bot for Gate

Nov 23, 2004, 7:37am
[View Quote] E N Z O,

How about something like NewAW had for global chat. All text runs
through a bot; could we not add something like his to AWGate and censor
any bad words instead of ejecting. Maybe even replacing cuss words with
something funny. No need to even eject, unless of course people start
flooding.

You could also use such a bot to show off some of the new features
available in Active Worlds. Such as coloured text, make tourists a
different colour to citizens and gatekeepers totally. Add small secret
chat zones by some trees.

The bot could also automatically answer newbies questions with a private
global message to them (so it grabs their eye) based on certain *keywords*.

Up to you ;o) Small, but worthwhile update to the Gate.

Even if so, it's not going to annoy any parent looking over their 10
year olds shoulder is it? That 10 year old won't even know what those
people are doing besides saying a bunch of funny things.

> And the *keyword* triggered response is gonna put GKs out of work!!!

Still need real people around to make visitors feel more *welcomed* and
answer the harder questions.

Yep, bad publicity if there just happens to be a parent watching over
their child's shoulder. They would see the swearing, they would not even
know what *ejecting* is or that the person has even been booted, and
instead they shut down the browser and remove it from the PC, not
allowing their child access to is anymore.

[View Quote] If it is seen as blanks, there is no point what so ever in the CA bot
ejecting them. That would, in my mind be stupid. No words are coming
through, the offenders are already pissed off because their words are
unheard.

It is a different story if you have a bot that can track a user and
eject them if they enter and cuss immediately, instead of ejecting
people for accidentally swearing.

You do get a few adults that join Active Worlds for the first time, not
knowing that words like *shit* can get you kicked out. Hard for us
Aussies you know ;o)

> So, a sentence like *^%$# &*(*^% ^^%$$&* *&^(##%$ would be seen as a

Log off and change IP? for many it's a matter of changing proxy servers
and coming back in. No need to log off the PC at all if that's what you
meant.

> Which brings me back to my previous suggestion of banning people by their

Computer ID? I would like to see you try to get them. Most of these
trouble makers are using PROXY servers, which means that they are hidden
behind another computer, so to speak. And you will not get any computer
ID. Then there are those hidden behind routers and hardware firewalls
and the likes. I would like to see you get a computer ID out of those.

If you manage to ban someone by computer ID, again all it takes is for
them to use a proxy server to come back in. There is no effective way of
*banning* someone.

[View Quote] You really aren't taking into consideration that repeat offenders *know*
what they are doing and *know* how to get around being banned. Test it
on me if you want in your own world, ban me for 1 week using my real IP,
my real computer ID, and I guarantee you that I will be back in your
world [1] within 5 minutes.

People like good ol' MATT can re-enter AWGate, AWNewbie, AWSchool and
any world he desires without a hassle, he is ejected and is back within
a few minutes with a new IP and no computer ID.

Anonymous Proxy servers are an unlimited source, you would never be able
to permanently ban someone.
You cannot ban proxy servers and many users actually depend on
connecting to the Internet using such, through business routers, some
ISP's; and some users are security conscious (privacy).

Why bother with banning - censoring words on the fly without warning,
without ejection is the best way.

Seems to be you are a very trigger happy individual ;o)

[View Quote] Anyone can log in through a proxy server...

When you first load up ActiveWorlds you get the option of how you
connect to the Internet, so those behind a firewall or proxy can connect:

o Through a dial-up Modem
o Through a LAN (including DSL, Cable Modem etc)
o Through a firewall or proxy server

If you've already chosen your settings, you can choose to use a proxy
server later on by simply opening your aworld.ini file and removing
anything under connection:

[connection]

If tourists were not allowed to use a proxy, you would be missing out on
a lot of users.

Spam originating from these newsgroups?

Nov 1, 2004, 10:25pm
Hello All,

I'm not sure where to start. But lately I've been receiving e-mail that
seems to be 'Carbon Copied' to many of these newsgroup members.

It seems that this *mailing group* is aimed at American Politics.

The most recent e-mail I have received from these individuals is
attached with a photo.

There are *no* options to unsubscribe from their little list and I have
never asked for e-mail from these people.

I will warn those here, that if I am to receive one more of these spam
e-mails to my inbox, I will be reporting those senders to their ISP for
spamming.

Spam originating from these newsgroups?

Nov 2, 2004, 7:06am
[View Quote] Of course I have a spam filter. In fact, my mail server filters spam etc
etc. But these are not really "SPAM" in the sense that it is people
trying to sell goods and flooding my e-mail. They are not something a
normal filter would pick up as they are like normal e-mails.

I could set up a *mail filter* to delete those messages automatically,
but that would still require me to download those messages to my PC
already and I don't even want to see them at all.

Best way in this case is to contact their ISP. I have not received
anymore e-mails from them since my warning, so stay tuned.
