AW4 vs. SL features

Mar 15, 2006, 3:57pm
I know what "yiff" is ;D It has two fs!

Maybe things were different back when you were on AW, but there are some
very conservative people on AW. They don't really band together as an
identifiable group but it can be annoying when they expect everyone else
to be like they are.

4 1 Release update

Apr 6, 2006, 12:18pm
First of all, Stagecoach Island is a 4.1 galaxy server, while Active
Worlds is currently a 3.6 uniserver. The issue is one of backwards
compatibility. 4.1 worlds are quite different to 3.6 worlds, and getting
the new 4.1 uniserver and client to work smoothly with 3.6 worlds is
quite a task. Also, the Wells Fargo project didn't have to tackle the
task of converting a 3.6 world to a 4.1 world.

Also, the Wells Fargo project does not include some 4.1 features, notably:
- Voice chat
- Personal avatars (the Wells Fargo avatar customisation is not a 4.1
feature, it is a custom feature for their galaxy)

So no, it's not that 4.1 only works if you're a bank. It's that 4.1 only
works if you're a private client looking for a modified version to cut
out some unfinished features and if you're starting a 4.1 world from
scratch.

4.1 April Fools Prank

Apr 1, 2006, 1:31pm
Like many other loyal Active Worlds customers, I felt very disappointed
and betrayed when I found that the announcement of 4.1 in AWGate today
was just an April Fools prank. We have been waiting for 4.1 for months,
and many of us have been very excited. I am sick and tired of being lied
to by AWI, with continual broken promises about 4.1's release date. It
was not funny and was very insensitive to use our anticipation against
us like this.

So to all those reading this newsgroup post, I have just one thing to
say: April Fools. I happened to think the prank was funny, and if you
were upset by it, I think you really need to reevaluate how much
importance you place in AW. When I saw people getting mad at this, I
could only think: "Get a life. A real one." Honestly, how sad is it to
consider the joke "poor taste"? Jokes about the disabled are poor taste.
Pranking people about a computer program is not. I am very glad that
these people don't seem to represent the majority:

Azraeleus: okay whoever is responsible for this needs to be hurt

Gent: from what I can see, this is in VERY poor taste, given how long
people have waited, and how many people have left AW for SL

Veger o: OH FUNNY yual tell them its a joke but NOT ME

shala PR: NOT freaking funny

Although I agree that Rick Noll has not been setting realistic deadlines.

4.1 April Fools Prank

Apr 5, 2006, 8:15pm
Yes, because 4.1 coming out will so be like going to Disneyland.

One difference here: 4.1 is still coming out, it just didn't happen on
the 1st of April.

Tell me, what feature about 4.1 are you most looking forward to? Y'know
what I am probably looking forward to most? Finally being able to dock
the damn contacts list again. The way it used to be back in the good ol'
days. Either I never noticed how retarded everyone was back then, or the
average AW user was less retarded.

I stand by my sweeping statement. kthxgoodnite

Free Citizenship

Apr 6, 2006, 12:04pm
I really don't think it's insensitive. It's AWEC's fault your event
wasn't listed, nobody else's. You could still have posted about it here,
and I told you I'd be happy to list it on the AWEO calendar, but you
decided to just cancel it instead.

Free Citizenship

Apr 6, 2006, 12:05pm
Except it's hosted on awcommunity.org, so we really should be able to
tell them to shape up. AWI is providing them with resources, and they're
using them badly.

Robbie's TrueSpace Tutorials

May 10, 2006, 9:56pm
The attraction of Robbie's tutorials is that they're tailored
specifically to using TrueSpace to model for Active Worlds. It covered
some Active Worlds specific things that have to be taken into account
(e.g. shader attributes) that other tutorials wouldn't, no matter how
detailed they were, unless they were made for an AW audience.

Though of course any tutorial should help in its own way, I'm surprised
Robbie's has disappeared. It was mirrored in quite a few places.

Yeah, but remember MIDIs do not sound the same on every system. It all
depends on the MIDI drivers.

4.1 does NOT work

Jun 8, 2006, 8:15pm
Before jumping to blaming AW 4.1, have you considered that it may be
your video drivers or your DirectX version? Upgrade both to their latest
stable release. 4.1 will be designed to work with these, which may be
where your problem is coming from.

If this doesn't fix the problem then contact AWI instead of complaining
about it here.

You can actually try the voice chat out on Mars.

CyVote

Jun 11, 2006, 6:35pm
You go to the webpage after you've gotten the password from in-world.
The voting itself isn't done by bot.

If you trust someone else enough to use your citizenship, or if you
could have access to an XP computer for a while, you could enter
Cyawards world. It only takes a moment to click the star, and once the
bot's given you your password, you can note it down and vote on the
webpage at your convenience.

Friend with problem, need help please...

Jun 29, 2006, 3:14pm
I have Winamp set as my default media player but media commands still
work fine for me in AW. It's actually a very well behaved peice of
software. I wasn't aware it could take over WMP functions.

To Rick and JP...

Jun 28, 2006, 5:18pm
I realise your reluctance to give everyone V4 object rights in
AlphaWorld. However, as you have done this in Atlantis, I wonder if it
would be too much to ask for COFMeta to see some of that sweet V4 action
also.

Enabling global events would be nice too (this being something you have
done in AlphaWorld). Adding the standard c_ corona and your new p_
particle textures to COFMeta's object path would also be easily done.

If would be fair to say that Metatropolis is an abandoned world, so my
final request may be a little overambitious. However, COFMeta's ground
object is woefully undersized. It doesn't even extend beyond maximum
visibility. Replacing it with a retextured version of AlphaWorld's
ground object wouldn't be hugely difficult.

Thankyou.

[AW Reunion 2007] Where To Next?

Jul 26, 2006, 1:43am
The "main" reuinion I would say would be the one that's organised by or
sponsored by AWI.

I'm going to have an AW reunion with myself at my house tomorrow and
it's going to be the best reunion of them all.

Also, they provide webcam feeds at AW GZ, and they advertise it.

There is an official reunion, and it is more official than Cablecar
Gal's. Deal with it.

I'd suggest that Cablecar Gal decides on a name for hers if she hasn't
already, to differentiate it from the official reunion.

Even if their sponsorship just amounted to them giving their assent and
a guarantee that they trust the organisers and expect the thing to go
well, it still makes the thing the 'official' reunion.

All I'm worried about is people going out for reunions and finding the
whole thing a total failure. Actually I'm not really that worried about
it. But still, there is a tendancy in the Active Worlds community to
give jobs to friends or just the people who act nicest, rather than the
people who would be best suited for it.

Jul 30, 2006, 8:45am
I don't like Goreans either, but from my experience they stick to their
own areas.

Or maybe it's because I'm a furry and they don't dare come near the
furry areas. I dunno!
