Small world, a lot of those people on that list have come under my
executioners axe at one point or another. *shudder* That corner of AW must
suck now. Thank god I outgrew it.

Well, to correct those errors, it would say somthing like
"Avatars are the visual representations of people and computer programs
called bots, who are currently inhabiting the Active Worlds virtual
environment. Wherever you see an avatar, there is most likely another person
using Active Worlds similar to yourself."
If you ask me, that sounds purely cheezy and is probably too complex for the
newbie cits that can't even move yet (Seems more tourists know how to move,
build, etc. than cits now that Juno has dumped everyone on us)

I finally noticed the AW3.1 splash screen today (I'm normally doing so many
other things it finds itself in background). That girl, her knockers look
moore real than her head. Was the 3.1 beta splash minus a badly drawn 50
pound female? If not, does anyone still have the 3.0 beta splash handy? I'd
like somthing more decent and I'll just edit out the beta part and change it
to 3.1 instead of 3.0. Email it to me at eyemwing at teleport.com or post a URL
or somthing.

Hrmm, a few things come to mind. What about temperture? If you haave
problems running other 3d accellerated programs, this is most likely the
issue. If you don't have any other 3d apps, try removing the chassis of your
case, and fooling any anti-case intrusion system installed on the case (if
any, they're rare, but exist). Then identify your video card (usually in an
AGP (brown) slot, but may be in a PCI slot (white)). If theres anything in
the slot directly below the card, move it now if you have space. Then, try
to figure out if your video chipset just has a heatsink or a heatsink and
fan. Boot the computer and try to run AW3.1. If you just have a heatsink,
try to lightly touch the heatsink (watch it, these things can get H O T
enough to melt skin) and if you feel heat before touching it, you're
overheating, or if when you touch it, it burns you, you're overheating and
sucking on your finger. If you also have a fan on there, try to touch the
back of the card instead. Same rules apply as above. If you're overheating,
for a couple dollars you can add more ventilation fans to your case (I
prefer an intake near the CPU and expansion cards and power supply and an
exhaust in the front of the case, but you may want to reverse this airflow
depending on the location of your power supply and how much it bothers you
to walk by your computer and get hit with a rush of hot air)

Just updated my Hercules 3d Prophet II MX 32mb to the latest Detonator
drivers (Detonator 3, v6.50) and the viewing pane isn't rendering. Didn't
happen when I updated my TNT2 Vanta Plus 16mb to these exact same drivers.
Previously, I'd been using the factory drivers (v4.0) and experienced no
problems. Concidering how many AWians use nVidia based cards and how long
these drivers have been out, I assume this problem is related to somthing
I'm doing, but for the life of me, I can't find it.

Sig removed from this server (see, unlike some I know whats good for me).
Heh, and it turns out that after 5 or 6 reboots it did work, then the next
time I rebooted, the damn display didn't even come up. Apparently theres
somthing between the card and the driver, so I've gone back to the old
Hercules drivers.

Idiot. Don't change your name when you go AFK. Names are a coveted thing. I
once lost my name (it was Wing Cmdr at the time) for approximately two
months. You see, someone registered a new cit and gave it my name. Heh. Then
when AWCI tried to charge his fake CCN it didn't work and got cancelled. He
was nice enough to foward me my telegrams once a week though. Heh.

Seems about right, and worlds can be added/extended with a quick trip into
the universe settings (Much like world settings). Now if they're accessing
AW from a 14.4 line, then taking up to 48 hours is believable :)

I agree completely, AWCI is using a complex workaround for writing a simple
piece of software. When I order computer parts, an invoice is emailed from
each vendor within SECONDS, on loading dock within 1-2 hours, and anywhere
between the time that confirmation email arrives, I can change my order
instantly. And the hardware arrives within a day or two and is in use that
same day. Of course, if the delivery guy doesnt follow instructions, it can
sit on the side porch for a couple weeks, but that isn't really part of the
equation (IDIOTS CANT READ THE SIGN)

How true. There are points where redundency just gets stupid. The AW browser
sucks bandwidth like a vacuum as is. Adding IRC would become an added drain,
and pretty stupid too. That'd be like AOL adding MSN messenger support. If I
want to be on IRC, I'll use mIRC. If I want to be on AW, I'll use AW. At
least that way I can tell WTF is going on. Honestly, how many of you know of
a successful IRC channel based on activities of another chat channel or
program? IRC blows the donkey (excuse that colorful metaphor) compared to AW
to begin with. *decides against arguing it*

Crossposting to wishlist...
REMOVING the chat limit would be completely pathetic. I don't want to listen
to a coupla tourists cybering on the other side of AW while I'm building.
It'd make the lives of PKs VERY VERY difficult. Bots on the other side of
the world could spam GZ. General chaos would ensue. I do feel that the
option to place a chat "beacon" at a location to hear what goes on there and
participate in a discussion without actually being there would be a better
option than this.

Two quick fixes for this.
1) World option (That window's getting pretty big aint it?)
2) Shows in whisper list regardless of speaking status with another notation
to seperate it from citizens/tourists/bots (like parenthesis)
Also, these things aren't visible in the 3d pane, only the whisper bar so it
isn't cluttering the world any.
This seems like an interesting concept and one that AWCI just might pick up
on since it's going in this group as well, and would make the job of
watching your world GZ or in the case of the PKs, every AWCOM GZ much, much
easier.

Odd, my citizenship can only run TWO bots at a time. Am I being cheated or
are you just misinformed? Also, bot's take up annoying amounts of bandwidth
that us poor 56k and under users desperately need. Also, even at super-high
resolutions, the use of a bot requires switching between Windows, which
often slows down the "remote participant" at whatever. The chat beacons
would function exactly like a chatbot, but be based in the normal chat
window, not take up a bot space and not require a seperate uniserver login.
The beacon would be placed in a predified avatar at the world and
coordinates specified for it. For the more paranoid users, there would be an
option in the options box for the IO to notify of the arrival of a chat
beacon or bot. World owners could choose what areas to limit these goodies
to, but as they aren't annoying little shits like most bots are, they'd not
be subject to the restricted radius UNLESS the world owner set that as an
"exclusion zone".

online) and getting a Hercules 3d Prophet II MX 32mb. These 2 upgrades are
fairly cheap and will increase performance tenfold assuming your hard drive
is fast enough. And then, later on, grab yourself a pair of IBM Deskstar 20
or 30 gig 75GXP hard drives and an IDE RAID/ATA100 card.

I find you grow with your hard drive until you get to 20gb. When I got a 1
gig drive, it took a year to fill. Same with my next 2 gig drive. Then my 10
gig drive, which was filled to near capacity after a year. Now my cheesy 20
gig drive, I can't get it beyond 11 gigs.

Absolutely assuming your motherboard supports it.

I can't give you numerical stats, but I can tell you that Win98 SE loaded
hella faster when I noticed my mistake in my BIOS last week (left it at
PC100)

Well, if you think you got ripped, I just found out that one of my very
close friends spent $200 on 32mb of an odd off-type of RAM specific to her
motherboard. It would've cost less to grab an Asus A7V133, a Duron 700 and
256 megs of RAM, and a little extra to switch to an ATX case. Thats a
helluva lot better, going from a K5 200MHz to a Duron 700 and 32mb RAM to
256.

Watch it with the big monitors :) They're expensive as hell to ship and
don't fit in most cars.

Easy. Images of Windows CDs, installs of games, porno AVIs, MP3s, gigantic caches, etc.
