Sitting wondering of the state of aw..watching the cits leave one by one.
GK's are supposed to be there to keep things G as possible, yes I understand
this but I find they are acting more like moms lately than aids. Nobody
likes to go into a room and to be constantly be told what to say or not to
say to extremes (with no set rules I may add). Sure there are children
around but there are ALSO adults. Recently I was ejected for disagreeing
with a GK although I used no abusive language etc. New arrivals are told not
to talk...not to chat in a chat room - no discussions, no politics, no
debates, no nothing. Then they are told if they want to chat (already not a
great impression of a chat room) they must go to other worlds. They get
there and they are all empty. Why? because the Main Chat Room is a bore.
With so many GK's instead of helping the new arrivals are too busy worrying
about what might be talked about that all we are allowed to talk about now
is how the weather is or what we ate for dinner.
And with GK fever breathing down everyone's neck, the tourists and possible
new cits get bored and leave and worse yet is the wanna-be gk's that also
macro and throw rules at everyone.
I confronted elven princess once at the Gate about her over ambition and
found out that she is not even here long enough to be considered for GK
service. I did wonder how a 353,000 number could be considered and I have
noticed an influx of high number, high cit number, over ambitious, bad
typists that are now the representatives of AW.
It is long overdue for a complete restructuring of the rules and regulations
of the Gate and GateKeepers if it hopes to survive in the chat world.

I completely agree with you. If *anyone* questions a GK, even in whispers,
for instance.. questioning why certain rules are in place, they refuse to
answer your question, and tell you to drop it (and you don't even know what
you are doing wrong) or else they will eject you. I was ejected for
questioning a GK about not being allowed to say the word "porn", and when I
telegrammed that GK, she did not answer my questions, or respond, and simply
blocked my telegrams. Also, someone else in AWGate was doing the exact same
thing I was (questioning the GK's rules) and they didn't eject him at all, I
asked him (the person who wasn't ejected) why, and he said it was because
they selectively eject people. They knew that he had chatlogs (which he
could send to abuse.activeworlds.com) of GKs ejecting him just because they
didn't like him, so they did not want to eject him. I have also noticed
that a lot of GKs favor friends and give them tons of leeway. Do you know
that last sunday, we were not allowed to even mention saddam because it was
considered a debate topic to be taken to AWDebate? I have so many gripes
about the GKs...

Where do they draw the line?? It's so fuzzy as to what they consider
offensive and what they don't. How afraid are they of people being
offended? Because of their incredible phobia of offending people, all
intelligent conversation has been purged, leaving nothing but mindless
drivel. (heheheheheheeh :)))))))))))) ((((((((((((((your name)))))))))
helloooo) that type of stuff...

AWGate was not built for, nor ever intended to be a hangout for the main AW
crowd. It's first and most important goal is to orient and inform new
people that are experiencing the AW environment for the first time. When AW
was more populated, the rules of the gate helped better maintain a learning
environment. Alpha World, as you notice, is PG. Issues can be debated at
alpha world gz. The company AW does not discourage debate, in fact, if you
would ask some in the company, I'd bet you'd find they enjoy seeing a good
debate at alpha world ground zero, as long as no personal attacks are
involved.

However, your point is well taken because the worlds are not as populated as
they once were, and there are times when the gate is more populated than AW,
thus forcing those coming to visit friends to chat there, and the rules seem
to make it harder to enjoy the chatting experience when such restrictions
are in place.

Hopefully, the more populated AW becomes, the easier it will be to enjoy
chatting in a well populated area away from the gate that can spark the
interest of a more mature crowd.

The subject of re-populating AW is another thread : D

''Hopefully, the more populated AW becomes, the easier it will be to enjoy
chatting in a well populated area away from the gate that can spark the

WAKE UP. AW is dying. Too many restrictions and pricing has made people
turn elsewhere for 'fun'. The Gate is only an indication of 'control' not
fun. Gives the incoming adults the idea the program is only for children
(and therefore dull) and gives the children the idea that is just a bunch of
parents telling them what to do and what not to do. THAT IS NOT CHAT

The population in AW is down. There is power abuse. There is a power
struggle. There is non disclosure of funding (it lends to the power abuse,
which has caused the population to go down.)

It is shocking.
It has hurt.
It has destroyed.

To be truthful, I believe the numbers at Alpha world have increased a slight
amount. To say it is dying is extreme and false. However, the numbers
could be way up from what they are now with a little more heart from the
company regarding the needs of the citizens.

I agree with all your points sweets and Ferruccio's points as well. It's
time for GKs to stop getting all defensive as if we are critisising them
for the rules. We ALL understand why the gate needs an amount of censorship.

However, protesting will probably just make us look like "What about
FREE SPEECH?!?!" fools.

Why worry about repopulating aw? Why worry about how many are in awgate
verses any other world. All worlds were created to be populated. All worlds
signify in the world list what rating they are. If there are so many empty
worlds and you want to carry on conversations not allowed in awgate ...
simply go to an empty world and have at it, as long as that world is rated
for the type of convo you want to have. Why is that so hard?

Seems to me that what this person really means is that awgate is one of the
busier worlds but as the lady points out ... that is because this world is
the world all new folks come to when they install aw. Why o why, for
instance, would a GK tolerate *DOWN WITH GKS* constantly when new people are
arriving and need help. AWGate IS for this purpose ... it's not a chat
world. There are many other worlds to chat in. That's why GKs point people
to *other worlds* like AWDebate, etc.

AWGate is a greeting world, a help world, and then *a send them to other
worlds so they can see what else AW has to offer* kinda place. Bashing GKs
should not be tolerated in AWGate, rude or disruptive behavior should not be
tolerated ... no more than it would be tolerated in any world where the
owner or caretaker(s) are within earshot of these types of insults. Any
other world, unless empty, would eject you for this kind of behavior too.

AWGate is a world of introduction and not a place for kiddy antics.

hello it is over and done I am no longer going to help, no longer going to
be at the AW gate to be a pain and bore all the users to leaving, even
though I have gotten several help requests, and not at my bidding but
because they walk up to me. So today I posted in open Chat in the AWGateway
I am no longer available for help or anything else, if you need help ask the
GK and if one is not there wait for one, I am not going to help anymore

Hello ferrucio you are completely correct in what you say. Cliques and
Groups of people are gathered and only they can say what they feel is of
approprate nature, me as an acting GK wann be well I am nor have I ever been
a selective person, you do something wrong, then you are in trouble, and no
more about it, and of course thi sincludes me, and since I have been so
overly blasted about trying to assist and help, it will not be anymore. So
be assured the Cliques and Groups will persist and flourish. I have noticed
several posts in popen chat such as Active worlds sucks and many more from a
user of the same name yet they are not ejected or even asked to change the
name they are using or just go away. That is a problem, and as for the
Rules, theyare for people who have a vocabulary of 7 or 8 words, and a
limited ability to have a meaningful conversation. Typoes are inevitable
because you need to get the information out asap because of todays world of
faster faster information. If the converstaions of the people who are
complaining about me are so vast and intellectual, then maybe it would be a
valid and easily understood issue, but as it is, the understanding of a 3 to
6 word sentence is hard, I have not learned Ebonics yet, and have no plan
to. So to any and all you don't have to worry about me being in the
AWGateway and as for not being there for say 3 or 4 hours, well its hard to
sit there and listen/read the things that go on, and a lot get passed by
alltogeter. I for one think that the AWGateway should have a GZ that is in
the middle of a set of signs that post the rules and expectations of the
Gate to all who enter it. This would make it much simpler fo rthe user to
see and hopefully read and understand. Could be in Eng/Span/Jap/Ger/ and
even Russian, so that it would cover a wide range of users that visit from
all over the world. Just makes more sense than I guess most can't grasp.

[View Quote] And for those of us who have more than an 8 word vocabulary but still
use the words? It's such a cliche retort to not sharing the same views
on what to do with certain parts of a language. "You have such a
limited vocabulary!" The thing is... When I'm not here I don't always
act like I'm in an English class -- I don't carry my dictionary with me
into chatroom-esque places, does that mean because I use common words
and slang, and sometimes even swear words that I'm somehow less complex?
Just a question to ask yourselves. ;)

Most adults can use swearwords and not be offended by it... that is
unless you've grown up in a strict catholic family or something like
that. The only reason adults get offended by it is because they have
fragile egos that need to be massaged and not poked. I like to poke
though.. so therefore this is here now.

<-------applauds and agrees ;-"D. I seem to remember a lonnnnnnnng time
ago, Alpha Bit suggested a gathering place at AWGZ for all the people that
like to hang out at the gate area. I loved that idea but for some reason
nobody utilized it. GZ is usually empty, as are a lot of other worlds. With
so many cits not able to afford to renew, and for a time AW didn't allow
tourists, it made sense for those expired cits to visit the gate area to
visit their buddies that they knew hung out there. However, now that
Alphaworld allows tourists once again, I think this idea should be
reconsidered. Let's face it, GK bashing at the gate does not leave a good
impression on potential customers of AW. Nor do people assuming they can
cyber with anyone, not realizing the ages of the folks there. Nor does any
kind of beligerent behavior or "adult" type of conversations. Debates
sometimes turn nasty or may insult new people who hold different opinions.
Why should we scare away potential customers and then complain that AW is
dying? Doesn't make sense. If we want things to improve or possibly
(remotely) rates to come down some, we need to look at the consequences of
our actions.

I think that EP has a great idea.

the middle of a set of signs that post the rules and expectations of the
Gate to all who enter it. This would make it much simpler fo rthe user to

All AW needs to do is post a bunch of signs in several languages explaining
the basic rules in the gate area and perhaps how to get around in that
language. Most of the time the poor GK's have no idea how to instruct
someone who needs help in another language. Especially if it is a language
using different symbols such as Arabic.

Well well, gets a actual response from someone that is at least able to
surpass the 8 word vocabulary. Bravo to you. The thing you mention about the
Swearing, well I have what is known as "Truck Driver Mouth" yet I can have a
conversation without having to resort to the lesse wording of the people who
feel it necessary to sware just to be heard. On this note, I would like to
state that if the GK's on duty, and I know of several that are worth the
time they spend at it, would not join into a group or clique to ignore the
new users that arrive. The needs of the Torist is great, and many have
arbitrarily just walked up to me because of the way I presneted myself at
the gate and asked for help. Soit tells me one thing, the GK is not
performint the task they have volunteared (sp??) for and then forget they
are there as a GK and decide it's beyond them to have to help. I know of 4
GKs that are guilty of this, and many would think different. But that's ok,
they know who they are. The truth is painful, and only the strong can
survive it. They have honor and trust then. As for my being attached to
someone does not make me a bad person. Just because he is a GK I expect him
to perform his duties the same as the rest of the GKs are supposed to do.Be
it may that I am so limited in my abilites and communications skills, why is
it I am asked for help?

Very much so. As for the Pricing, it is so reasonable 6.95 a month, I mean
how can you not be able to pay that minute amount? I am currently on the
Unemployment lines, and still can pay a miniscule price such as 6.05, and If
my memory serves me correctly, at one time the cost was 19.95 a month. a big
difference to now. At that cost it was a cost prohibative price and made me
just remain a tourist and not care. Now being a Cit the Gate is a good place
to meet people from all over the world. If the Monitor of this Discussion
Forum is looking in, please take the Signs Suggestion into account, it would
make the GK assignment a lot easier for them, and not have to learn 6 or 7
languages or be a full on scholar of Languages. Just a thought re-inforceing
the original idea

For some people that 7 bucks (USA) a month, is affordable. For people like
me it is not. For that 7 bucks a month I can feed my family for 4 or 5 days
.. And when I was unemployed this past summer, believe me, that 7 bucks a
month really went far. ( I had anemia because I didnt' eat any red meat for
over 5 months because we were THAT broke!) For some other people who live in
other countries that 7 bucks a month is even more. I can't quote you the
figures in their currency cus to be quite honest I don't wanna spend the
time to look it all up to make my point. And no, I wasn't recieving
Unemployment benefits or food stamps while I was unemployed. We were barely
scraping by and I literally depleted whatever we had in our kitchen cabinets
just to feed my child first and then us. Yes, I have a job now. But now that
money is being used to eat better and for Christmas and to get caught up
with bills. So you see........ not everyone can afford 7 bucks a month for
a chat program online. We were lucky to afford to pay our electric bill and
cable, rent and heat with the little bit Lion earned. You should not assume
everyone has it as good as you dear. ;-")

Elven Princess, sweets is correct.
Registration has never been $19.95 per *month*.
It was $19.95 per *year* from Sept. 1, 1997 until January 2002.

From Mauz's history page:
http://mauz.info/awhistory.html

1997
0901 Registration fee introduced ($19.95 per year)

2002
0103 Version 3.2 build 398, forced upgrade: no more tourists,
newcomers required credit card to enter; more expensive
pricing model ($9.50 per month)

0206 Build 400, new pricing plan: tourists allowed in AWGate
and some worlds, lower prices ($6.95 per month),
free citizenships no longer available with small worlds

0213 Build 401: 1 week free trial citizenship with credit card

Or, if you'd rather hear it straight from the horse's mouth
(no disrespect intended)here's an excerpt from Rick Noll's
letter of January 2, 2002 to all aw users:

"This new pricing structure would go into effect on the 3rd of January,
but no existing users would be affected for this initial period.
Renewals would still be done at the regular $19.95, per year and
sometime in early February we would announce what kind of pricing
program we can offer the existing user base."

Rick Noll's open letters (no longer on the AWI website) and the
accompanying FAQ's during the 2002 price change upheaval are at:

HEAR!! HEAR!!! I absolutely, totally, 100% agree with you, sweets. Well
........ except for maybe for one tiny little detail .....

Yes, technically The Gate is a chat room, but it is far more than that. Have
you ever seen this macro posted by the Gks? .....
"AWGate is a *starting point* for those new to Active Worlds. A friendly
place to get your questions answered."
Or this one ... ? "Welcome to the Active Worlds Gateway. The gateway to
hundreds of 3D worlds in which you can explore, build or chat."
The Gate is supposed to be a portal to the many worlds of the AW universe.
Yes, many ppl, Cits and tourists alike, hang out there to chat, but the main
function of The Gate seems have been lost somewhere along the way and the AW
"higher ups" need to address this issue.

And here's an idea - If there were only ONE person doing ALL of the training
for the Gks, then perhaps a lot of the "no set rules" perception could be
dispensed with, and all the Gks could have a more uniform code of conduct to
go by. I had more than my fair share of "head butting" with GKs when a
difference of opinion arose on the interpretation of the guidelines came
into question.
*side bar* and fyi for those unaware - I quit the GKs for various reasons,
but I digress ...

Also - I think we all need to be aware of the many and varied cultural
differences in The Gate. Not only with Cits and tourists, but the Gks
themselves. What is offensive to some may be perfectly acceptable to others.
Case in point: a tourist named "fried fox fart" made (pardon my pun) a big
stink in The Gate one day solely because of his name. He never once made a
rude or inflammatory remark. The GK on duty and many Cits and tourists, too,
asked fox to change his name. It offended many. YES, it's a dumb name, but
non G rated? That's open to interpretation. The Gks like to say, if you
don't see it in a Disney movie, you can't say it in The Gate. Well, that
wart hog in The Lion King suffered from flatulence. LoL!!! See my point? It
is all subjective.
"Fox" should have changed his name out of courtesy, if only to avoid the
many barbs being flung at him because of that very dumb name. In fact, I
believe he did change it.

And yes, the macros need a HUGE overhaul. They are wordy, pedantic,
redundant, repetitive, over-stated and should be put into simpler English
words so that ppl from all over the world who have very little comprehension
of the English language can understand the gist of the rules. More specific
translations can be offered later if need be. Perhaps even have the more
basic "Rules of Conduct Guidelines" translated into Spanish, Portugese,
French, Italian, Russian and whatever other languages they need to be in.
Also, a little humor wouldn't kill anybody, either. Instead of telling an
offender in The Gate to "play nice", why not ask them who sneezed in their
cereal this morning? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. : )

And everybody, plz remember, the Gks are only Human. They have bad days,
too. Headaches, other things on their minds at times, Christmas is right
around the corner (a HUGE stressor in some households) and then the "trouble
makers" come in, seeing how many buttons they can push. Some Gks are more
tolerant than others, and even that can change from day to day, depending on
what is going on in a Gks personal life. Is it fair? No. Do you have to deal
with it? No. Go to an unmoderated world in AW. There are hundreds. Will it
change and get better? No. At least not until a more uniform training can be
implemented, or the Gks all turn into bots. LoL!!!

<<climbs off my wordy, pedantic, redundant, repetitive and over-stated soap
box>>
Sorry, everybody, but I have issues. (back issues of TV Guide) hee

Good points there Tart Sugar.

Although, if AWGate is merely a starting point for tourists, why are
there teleports to non-tourist worlds?

In my opinion there are only really a few simple improvements that need
to be added to the Gate and GK system:

- Teleports to non-tourist worlds should removed, or placed into a
harder to reach section that new cits can be guided to. Teleports to
*all* tourist worlds of G/PG rating should be added.

- GKs macros, are, as you say, complicated. I also see
grammatical/spelling errors in a lot of them, which at best makes AW
look less sophisticated and at worst gives newbies misleading advice. I
also think GKs need to become less reliant on their macros; I frequently
see GKs posting a macro about something irrelevant and possibly
confusing to the newbies just because they see certain keywords (e.g.
whisper) in the chat.

- People who complain about their ejections need to stop being
automatically branded as troublemakers trying to get their ejection
removed. The eject complaints actually need to be listened to, possibly
with a committee set up to screen out troublemakers trying to get back
and to tell GKs if they think they follow the rules a little closely to
the letter.

- Put that windmill from the old gate back! ;¬)

ok Let's take this point by point .....

[View Quote] I never said a starting point for tourists. Just a starting point. Period.
: )

Excellant idea - however, why should the non-tourist world Tports be hard to
reach? Let's get the new Cits OUT!!! Let 'em explore!!!
But I like the idea of "tourist friendly" Tports that are G/PG rated. Make
it easier for tourists to see what all AW has to offer. Maybe they'll buy a
Cit. <hint> <hint>

<omg> My pet peeve!!!!! How hard is it to find a junior high student to
check for spelling and grammatical errors? yikes
Especially when the error is out there in BOLD. LoL!!! Not a real good
impression.

> whisper) in the chat.

Well, I relied on my macros because I don't type very fast. If a person were
waiting for me to type out an answer to a question, they'd miss their
dinner! But yes, I agree with the rest. Some macros need to be deep 6'd. And
others need to be simplified.

I never really understood the big deal about being ejected. It's only for 5
minutes, most times. Suck it up and do yer time!!! Even if it really was in
error. I was ejected by mistake a few months back. The GK on duty tagged me
instead of the troublemaker. I thought it was funny. I painted the Blue Room
red while I was there. No biggie. <shrugs>
But, for the ppl who are truly offended by the black mark against their good
name *cough* perhaps a "complaint dept." could be set up and run by non-GK
citizens.

It may be only 5 minutes (which is another of my peeves - not advising us
when ejected on the notice, for how long it is for - aw fault) but it is a
matter of principle. I have also been aimed at and ejected instead of
another and yes found it funny, telling the GK he should go to shooting
school. (He actually shocked me and apologized in open chat for his error -
something in all years here have not heard a GK do - admit an error and
actually apologize out loud for that error (thereby clearing the person's
name as troublemaker, openly LOL)
Would you not complain about false arrest as well? In real life? They are
the 'Law' here and being ejected falsely goes against the grain, even if
only 5 minutes.
Not only me but others (including our visitors) take a boot up the rear as
insulting, when without just cause, whether in vr or real life. It is what
the 'boot' represents time-out given to a child or 'prison time' given to an
adult. Yes is only vr, but don't we all carry our real life emotions with us
when we come? We are human.

[View Quote] Even truck drivers have the courtesy to either eat at truck stops
where the rules are a little looser or to watch their language when
they eat at a 'family' restaurant.

Find a bunch of truck drivers, and then curse out some child in front
of them and see if they don't take you aside and educate you about
the 'rules' of swearing....

I was not raised with a 'strict Catholic upbringing'. Cross me the
wrong way and profanity can come out of my mouth that would
make a truck driver blush. If you overheard me when I'm alone and
working on something, you'd wonder if it wasn't Andrew Dice Clay
sometimes.

But when I'm in a public place like AWGate, I watch my language.

It's called 'common courtesy'. It's a form of respect.

Going into AWGate and hassling the GK's is disrespectful. I have
no respect for any of you who do it. You have 1000 worlds to hang
out in and do whatever you want. The only reason for you to hang out
in the gate is to flaunt your disrespect, and it's BS to say that you've
tried hanging out in other worlds but they are empty.

Maybe they are empty because people don't *want* to hang out
with a bunch of disrespectful people.

Maybe not everyone *wants* to swear.. even if they are not
Catholic.

It's possible to hang at the gate and have fun, and even have some
fun joking around *with* the GK's. Note that I said *with* them
and not *at* them.

GK's are people and all people deserve respect. I suspect a lot of
you who don't believe that will learn it when you get your first
job at McDonalds, and people start to treat you like a piece of
shit simply because you are wearing a particular uniform and
you say "would you like fries with that" a lot.

Acceptable and well stated. If you like to edit things good too, but never
take a statement out of context with me. But it's a common occurrence in
this place we call America, and it's just to maintain the thread of choice,
hope you have a nice holiday anyway. I have made a point, it seems to have
hit the spot

I gracefully bow out of this argument, as I don't take being booted all that
seriously. I know I was *innocent*, and those that matter to me know it
also.
However, in defense of the GK that needs glasses for booting me by mistake,
she did apologize profusely in open chat for her error. It was made even
more funny by the fact that a second before I got da boot I said, "3 cheers
for the GK!!! YEA!!!" and POOF, I was gone. LMAO!

And I, too, would ALWAYS apologize in open chat for waggling a finger at the
wrong person. Sometimes the chat would get to scrolling so fast the chat
lines ran together for my poor, old eye (yes, singular LoL). I don't know
whose shifts you've sat in on, but I've heard almost every GK that AW has
apologize for mistakes made.
