oh wow it's coming out. That's neet!

People can use these 3 days to perhaps break their addictions to ugly
public buildings worlds and perhaps try their hands at something new..
like the world Avatar! ha!

You will see a slight jump in activity in AW.
Followed by a slight drop in activity.

People come in, have fun. Then it goes back to normal. Thats the only guess
I've got.

If they are like me and using a nasty old worn out computer, still on windows
95, they will be shut out of AW completely, according to the rumor I heard.
Unfortunately, Im not able to upgrade windows on this computer & cant afford a
new computer, due to family crisis. I guess I'll end up shut out of AW?

actually, i'm not too sure about this, but i believe 4.1 unis will not be
compatiable with 3.6 browsers. remember something about that, not 100% sure
though.

I heard on 4.1 they had to go with Windows 98 or above only because of
certain drivers that won't work on Windows 95. But we'll see.

Mom used to say - a pessimist is someone that expects everything to go wrong
so when it does they are not surprised. They handle life better than the
optimist that needs psychiatric care because of the horrible shock of
something not going right....

ps: when it goes right, we expect it to have many bugs and then break
down....so no big shocks there either LMAO

No-one, and I stress absolutely no-one should be running windows 95 and
connected to the internet...

Or anything below XP for that matter.

I think that is correct, but in AW Universe i would hope that 3.6 is still
compatable for now. Forcing people to start using a beta that requires more
from your pc than ever before isn't a good move.

4.1 and 3.6 are going to be on a totally different universe. So technically
you could run 3.6 and 4.1 at the same time, this is supposed to help,
because 4.1 can be checked by world owners etc, to see if it all works
properly before they shut down the 3.6 universe.

The point being I believe, or so I have been told by my source, is that they
will copy the world from 3.6 to 4.1, and then people can test it, however,
when 4.1 comes out, anything you do in 3.6 will not be in 4.1 and vice
versa.

As always, it seems like everything is backward compatiable, so all your
av's objects etc should run in 4.1/

Some good news, for those who have not had a chance to check out any
versions of 4.1, is that the effects, ie. lighting and water are a lot
better, and easier to use in 4.1 and some of the lag issues dealt with,
again dependant on how much is in one area, and how good your computer is.

Apologies on jumping in on this conversation, but it is always a shame to
see anyone leave, just because a company can't be bothered to make new stuff
backward compatiable.

On the issue of using windows 95. You may be able to get a hold of a
windows 98, if you look in the right place. Your computer should be able to
handle it.

Feel free to gram me and I might be able to help you out on that side of
things.

Oh and people, don't hold your breath, blue isn't really your color lol.

In any company's defense, I think it's unreasonable and absurd to expect
them to support an 11 year old OS. You should only expect backwards
compatibility to a certain degree - 1 or 2 generations old.

Right now you can get a Dell computer for $300. You can even pay monthly
for it - 9 bucks a month. Not advertising dell or anything, just showing how
cheap modern PCs can be ;)

I agree with that, but after all, win 95, is actually only 2 generations,
unless you include of course win98SE and win milleniim (apologies on the
spelling)

I do agree with your comment that expecting things to go backwards too far
is unreasonable, and also tigerdirect have a lot of base machines, that come
with just the bare essensials at prices less than $300, especially if you
already have a monitor, keyboard etc, no need to buy a full kit if you
already have parts.

Although, I think in this thread that someone said support for 95 was taken
away ages ago, so if it still runs 3.6 then I guess 4.1 should run too, if
it uses the same technology.

I have only just joined these newsgroups, so not really sure on who is who
or anything, so I apologise if my information is incorrect.

I just hope that people can make the change, cause AW for all it's faults is
still a good thing to have. It is unreasonable to expect things to run
perfectly 100% of the time. I mean look at Microsoft. Nearly everyone uses
Windows and they are forever fixing it. If someone comes out with better
then people will use it. I agree there is other operating systems out
there, but they are not user friendly. After all not everyone is a computer
whizz. Most people just want to turn it on, and go, not worry about how it
all works.

Anyway, it does seem like there is a lot of knowledge floating around in
these groups, so hopefully things can be worked out.

Please keep it up, it is helpful to know whats going on

Have fun

Thank you, Talisan.

I also joined the world builders newsgroup. I believe I have see you post
in there also.

Seems definately 2 good places for news, views, and problem solving.

I expect to see these boards go nuts over the next few days.

As an owner of 2 worlds, and a member of a 3rd. I certainly expect to busy,
cause there is no way this upgrade will go on without any problems.

[View Quote] They dropped the _official_ support for Windows 95 six years ago already, with AW 3.0:
"Active Worlds 3.0 requires Windows 98. Because Microsoft has not made DirectX 7.0 available for Windows NT 4.0, this means that
Active Worlds 3.0 will not currently run under Windows NT 4.0. While not "officially" supported, in practice 3.0 should also be able
to run on Windows 95 and Windows 2000 systems (provided DirectX 7.0 has been installed and the other hardware requirements are
met)."

That is definately a valid point. Although with DirectX being up to version
9.0c I believe, will 4.1 even run on DirectX 7.

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of the background workings of AW. Since I
don't do programming and I don't work for AW.

It is quite humbling when I sit here and read this, cause I can build, (but
not make objects), I can build computers, and usually solve problems, but I
feel like a total idiot when I see some of the information put up in these
newsgroups.

I do know that even Microsoft is removing support and updates for 98, either
this year or aty some point during 2007, so it is going to be hard to see
that 4.1 will run on 95, but it may happen, it is something that will have
to be tested I guess.

However, I do know that 4.1 and 3.6 are supposed to be on 2 seperate
universes, but I don't know how long 3.6 will be running for. It is my
guess that they will phaze it out over time, but again, this is by no means
fact.

If I had more system details, and I am sure that myself and many others
would be able to find parts/software to be able to help out those with older
systems.

hmmm, that could be an interesting thread. With all the knowledge floating
around, we could help out those who have trouble with the new 4.1.

Just an idea!!!!!!

Someone sent me this not too long ago when I asked about the minimum and
preferred system requirements for 4.1:

4.1 Minimum System Requirements:

Pentium CPU 300Mhz or equivalent 64MB Memory Microsoft Windows (98, Me,
NT4, 2000, or XP) DirectX 7 or later Windows Media Player 6.4 or later
D3D video card with at least 8MB and the latest drivers

However, for the best possible experience in Active Worlds 4.1 we
recommend the following:

Pentium III CPU 750Mhz or better 128MB Memory / 256MB Memory for XP
Microsoft Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP 500MB free disk space DirectX 8.1
or later Windows Media Player 9 or later 3D accelerated video card with
at least 16MB and the latest drivers
