4.1 and 3.6 are going to be on a totally different universe. So technically
you could run 3.6 and 4.1 at the same time, this is supposed to help, because 4.1 can be checked by world owners etc, to see if it all works properly before they shut down the 3.6 universe. The point being I believe, or so I have been told by my source, is that they will copy the world from 3.6 to 4.1, and then people can test it, however, when 4.1 comes out, anything you do in 3.6 will not be in 4.1 and vice versa. As always, it seems like everything is backward compatiable, so all your av's objects etc should run in 4.1/ Some good news, for those who have not had a chance to check out any versions of 4.1, is that the effects, ie. lighting and water are a lot better, and easier to use in 4.1 and some of the lag issues dealt with, again dependant on how much is in one area, and how good your computer is. Apologies on jumping in on this conversation, but it is always a shame to see anyone leave, just because a company can't be bothered to make new stuff backward compatiable. On the issue of using windows 95. You may be able to get a hold of a windows 98, if you look in the right place. Your computer should be able to handle it. Feel free to gram me and I might be able to help you out on that side of things. Oh and people, don't hold your breath, blue isn't really your color lol. I agree with that, but after all, win 95, is actually only 2 generations,
unless you include of course win98SE and win milleniim (apologies on the spelling) I do agree with your comment that expecting things to go backwards too far is unreasonable, and also tigerdirect have a lot of base machines, that come with just the bare essensials at prices less than $300, especially if you already have a monitor, keyboard etc, no need to buy a full kit if you already have parts. Although, I think in this thread that someone said support for 95 was taken away ages ago, so if it still runs 3.6 then I guess 4.1 should run too, if it uses the same technology. I have only just joined these newsgroups, so not really sure on who is who or anything, so I apologise if my information is incorrect. I just hope that people can make the change, cause AW for all it's faults is still a good thing to have. It is unreasonable to expect things to run perfectly 100% of the time. I mean look at Microsoft. Nearly everyone uses Windows and they are forever fixing it. If someone comes out with better then people will use it. I agree there is other operating systems out there, but they are not user friendly. After all not everyone is a computer whizz. Most people just want to turn it on, and go, not worry about how it all works. Anyway, it does seem like there is a lot of knowledge floating around in these groups, so hopefully things can be worked out. Please keep it up, it is helpful to know whats going on Have fun [View Quote] here we go againMay 29, 2006, 7:14pm
Thank you, Talisan.
I also joined the world builders newsgroup. I believe I have see you post in there also. Seems definately 2 good places for news, views, and problem solving. I expect to see these boards go nuts over the next few days. As an owner of 2 worlds, and a member of a 3rd. I certainly expect to busy, cause there is no way this upgrade will go on without any problems. [View Quote] here we go againMay 29, 2006, 7:59pm
That is definately a valid point. Although with DirectX being up to version
9.0c I believe, will 4.1 even run on DirectX 7. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of the background workings of AW. Since I don't do programming and I don't work for AW. It is quite humbling when I sit here and read this, cause I can build, (but not make objects), I can build computers, and usually solve problems, but I feel like a total idiot when I see some of the information put up in these newsgroups. I do know that even Microsoft is removing support and updates for 98, either this year or aty some point during 2007, so it is going to be hard to see that 4.1 will run on 95, but it may happen, it is something that will have to be tested I guess. However, I do know that 4.1 and 3.6 are supposed to be on 2 seperate universes, but I don't know how long 3.6 will be running for. It is my guess that they will phaze it out over time, but again, this is by no means fact. If I had more system details, and I am sure that myself and many others would be able to find parts/software to be able to help out those with older systems. hmmm, that could be an interesting thread. With all the knowledge floating around, we could help out those who have trouble with the new 4.1. Just an idea!!!!!! [View Quote] contactsMay 29, 2006, 7:11pm
well, it would make things a lot easier, cause, at the moment, you have to
sit them on your list, just to stop them. However, how often does it actually happen. Unless you are part of a world with the person you don't like is also part of, then it is going to be rare you will meet those people and even then, you can mute them on sight, so is it really that difficult? I fail to understand why it is a problem for someone to know you are online or not. If it is a problem due to harrassment or abuse issues then the offender should be reported to AW, as their term & conditions apply, and the offender will be banned from AW anyway. Just my point of view. Have fun..... [View Quote] contactsMay 30, 2006, 1:39am
Is there a wager going yet about if it will work or not?
I'm sorry but my money would be on there being bugs in the system. [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 8:56pm
I really don't think blue is your color Talisan lol.
I am sure there is somewhere that it is May 30th unfortunately AW isn't located there [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 9:33pm
hmmm, now thats a good point.
Did AW actually mention to which time they were working too??? Big difference between real time and VRT [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 11:17pm
How many worlds do you currently have?
Wish I could afford a p100, of course dependant on the number of users I still can't wait to see what 4.1 can do, however buggy it is, just hope I don't have to deal with lag issues etc. Being a builder is a pain in the backside when people won't listen. World Owner and World builder, tis fun, but a pain in the backside at the same time Isn't AW wonderful [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 11:40pm
well wouldn't it be like easier on your wallet (and your heart) if you just
upgraded to a p80 or something? It's funny, it costs less to have a p50 15 user and a p30 5 user than it does to have a p80 20 user, yet it's exactly the same amount, go figure it. well I hope you can manage it, I wish I had enough time to visit half the worlds, just spend more time running stuff than I do visiting. I still cringe at my renewel fee, although it isn't till next january. [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 11:43pm
Wait a minute - SCHOOL
um did no-one tell you about summer break??? I have to work nights, so if it comes out before midnight (it's currently 9:41 EST) then I may get to see it Hmmm, can anyone say "extreme" bandwidth usage? it's a shame really, I am sure we could break a record for the biggest symultaneous (or however you spell it)) if we all click download at the same time lol (WEG) Not sure AW servers could handle everyone logging on to 4.1 though [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 29, 2006, 11:51pm
damn, thats harsh.
My stepson finished last week, so I feel for ya. well, at least you will have plenty of time to use it in a week or so, it isn't that far away. I have to work 6 nights a week so be thankful it's only school lol. I have another 30+ years of work left. lol [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 30, 2006, 12:05am
I think a lot of it is ignorance, after all it is quite easy to stop them,
but only if you know how. Anyway, lets, get back to something fun hehe I am getting mixed reports about whats happening So are we reisding ourselves to the fact it isn't out until tomorrow morning?? [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 30, 2006, 12:17am
I'm turning blue...May 30, 2006, 12:52am
lol, I think I will be purple by the time it gets here. I have to go to
work later tonight, so at least the time will pass a little more quickly, I half expect people to stay up all night waiting for it. Although, it is amazing how much more activity there is in AW today, compared to normal, however I am well aware that in here it takes a while for people to reply. It's just another way of communicating for me,cause I can keep an eye on it, without having to travel to other worlds. I have seen your name in lots of places but probably would have never spoken to you in I wasn't in here. By the way, apart from being a world owner, you do object modelling right? I can't model, but I love building, was thinking of charging for building for people. not sure anyone would go for it however. I think I'll stick with designing websites, and problem solving, after all I find it more enjoyable to build computers for people, and to do websites. Building is great fun to me, but I also know how many people take their builds and worlds personally, so not many people want someone fixing their builds, or putting things into their world. [View Quote] I'm turning blue...May 30, 2006, 1:38am
lol, the conversation is taking a definate turn for the worse.
I can tell it's getting late, and I was actually talking about AW objects. Is anyone biting their fingernails yet lol You do seem like a nice fella, but I don't need the model pictures thanks. [View Quote] In the next several hours..May 30, 2006, 11:47pm
I don't think it's quite second sight, it's just an understanding of AW lol.
Lets face it, when they launched it, nearly 500 people at least much have clicked on that link, and then over 500 people logged in, something was bound to break Still from what I saw 4.1 ROCKS!!!! [View Quote] A few notes on 4.1May 30, 2006, 12:26pm

interesting to read, while we all sit here and wait http://help.activeworlds.com/document.php?aw41 Happy waiting A few notes on 4.1May 30, 2006, 10:46pm

Help a new mac babyMay 30, 2006, 8:26pm
Well you can use firefox for newsgroup, I believe that works on a Mac but I
could be wrong. I could be wrong but doesn't the AW browser work on a Mac? If You want a copy of Service Pack 2, then go to the microsoft site, and look for it under the networking/administrator area. There should be an exe file so you can download service pack 2. As for a PC emulator, you could try going to www.download.com, and see if they have anything. http://www.macwindows.com/emulator.html - is a emulator site, they seem to have free emulators Hope this helps Angelicus [View Quote] Help a new mac babyMay 30, 2006, 10:23pm
Ok, well I have downloaded it, and put it onto disc, but I am afraid I am no
MAC expert, so I am unable to know how you would do it. Good luck, if you need any more help just ask. I may be able to help you out. [View Quote] Help a new mac babyMay 30, 2006, 11:09pm
If you are going to use an emulator, then you may not need windows on there.
The emulator may fool aw into thinking it's on windows, just a thought. I personally have not put windows on a MAC, but I have burnt windows XP Pro +SP2 onto a disc and ran it from there, now I don't know if this will work for a MAC [View Quote] Help a new mac babyJun 3, 2006, 7:30pm
Try downloading a trial version, and using a crack
Has worked for me in the past. Could also try using a file share program to get a copy. Just an idea ;) [View Quote] Help a new mac babyJun 3, 2006, 9:07pm

I was in there for all of about 20 minutes, now I can't get back in, just trying to find out if it's Me, the hosting or AW Any info would be great thanks Problems with 4.1May 30, 2006, 11:15pm
Thanks Kenneth
Can't say it is a surprise. After all, I am running a 3mb connection and it took over 1/2 hour to download the program in the first place. The AW servers must have had a s*it fit [View Quote] Problems with 4.1May 30, 2006, 11:28pm
lol, yup, I said all along that the AW servers couldn't do it.
They should have rolled it out in sections. First for the host, (which they did) Then world owners then citz then tourists not just put it in the immigration and leave it as a free for all. Oh well, looks like we'll all be waiting till this time tomorrow to get 4.1 [View Quote] Problems with 4.1Jun 1, 2006, 7:10pm
Hi Marnie
It would seem that you have a dll file missing, http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?gdiplus The above link will allow you to download the gdiplus.dll (for free) however I don't know where it needs to be copied too, so that may be a bit of trial and error on your part, but I think it needs to be copied to your system or system 32 folder within windows. Perhaps someone else can confirm? Anyway hope it helps. [View Quote] Possible Memory leak Switching 3.6 to 4.1May 31, 2006, 7:11pm
Just so people know. I know a lot of people have had this problem, but.....
Get out of AW Gate Everything seems to run fine once you get out of AW gate. The freezing and locking up, seems to be just because everyone hits AW gate when they go back in. As for switching between 3.6 and 4.1, I have the both installed on my machine, in two seperate locations and can switch back and forth no problem. I am running a 3200+ AMD Athlon 64 which runs at 2Ghz with 1.5GB RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256RAM. I do know however, that after speak with other people that AW Gate does cause problems in 4.1 but other worlds are fine. From what I have also heard, 3.6 is going to be running for a couple more weeks before the 3.6 universe is shut down. (This is what I have been told, not fact!!!) Anyway, I have also been told that the world server for 4.1 is still in beta version, which is why it is so hard to come by, some people have it some don't. Other Hosts don't want to use it till the bugs are worked out (don't know if there is any bugs). So if you are a world owner, or know a world owner, they are going to have to speak to the person who hosts their worlds. Anyway, I hope this helps. 4.1 itself runs well, although I am not sure AW Gate is ready to have the amount of people it has in there. Please also note, (everyone probably already knows this) AW will only show you a certain amount of users, so if someone doesn't answer you, chances are AW swallowed your words. Kind of funny really, never had that problem until yesterday, when nearly 300 people turned up in the same place. For anyone who is a tourist, you have to wait, 4.1 will get here soon enough, after all, they are shutting down the 3.6 universe, so they have to let everyone have it sooner or later. [View Quote] |
