Port surfing, illegal ? // Communitycount draculaJul 16, 2003, 10:43am

Do NOT enter other universes on our servers by changing the port on the aworld.ini. This is against the EULA and could get your right to use AW revoked. Do not port surf our servers. When I logged into AW I had recived this. I am wondering what the big harm is if I find a new universe? Maybe that could cause me to register as a citizen and even buy a world . The reason why I did this was I was asked to help out with a slight problem on one OP I host. The OP is used in an universe hosted by AW. I am a citizen in the universe, but has never downloaded the browser simply because I have a small HD. I had forgotten which port it was running on, so I had to try until I found it. I am now wondering; where can I find links to download all browsers separte for all universes? I have not came across it anywhere at activeworlds.com . I am also wondering what the f*** EULA is. I do not recall reading anywhere when installing the software that chaning the ini is illegal. Would it be illegal to remove ones password from the ini if one has by mistake sometimes set it to save it automatically? I must say I am getting very tired of the nazi policy AWI has; they come up with new shit for worldowners each day. They change the rules as they please; even in the middle of a contract. I guess it is their right to do so tho, but living in a fairly democratic country I just get so pissed off at people who has no respect of others; simply because they feel they do not have to. I am also wondering if it is legal for a comapany to "spy" on me; how else would they have known I had to look for the right port? Furthemore, if this EULA thing came with 3.4 and I use 3.3 for entering various universes, I should not be braking any stupid laws? Drac r i c h a r dJul 16, 2003, 11:13am
Modifing the ini is in breach of the AW EULA (End user license agreement) as
its counts as editing the software. Some universes on are private and aren't ment to be visited by people. Each browser you install licenses you to 1 copy of the AW Software for accessing the AW universe only or which ever universe its set to. I had a slightly extended talk from bill about this. But doesn't this mean programs like AWStart are illigal? r i c h a r dJul 16, 2003, 11:19am
Quite simpley as well to find out like with me the universe keeps log files.
Of visitors IP's etc. Your name and/or IP must have been located in one of the private universes log files and if it was your IP it may match up with your name in the AW uniserver logs as well. http://www.activeworlds.com/help/aw34/uniserver_log.html does show quite a extensive logging mechanisum. But like world server logs that shows every bit info about you down to the exact cells youve queried etc count draculaJul 16, 2003, 1:18pm
I have looked into each and every folder where I have my browser installed,
I can find NO license text. How I am supposed to know what it says 5 years after I installed a software ? I disagree that editing the ini is editing the software.Espeacially since it is a part that is meant to be edited. I found a mumble jumlble license text in the worldserver software; it did not make much sense to me tho. I wonder how AWI is suspecting people with other native language than english to make any sense of the text at all. If someone has a private universe and wish to have no visitors, one simply do not allow tourists to enter; simple as that. I do not really see the logic of having 20 identical browsers installed , when one could do with one or two. I still not see the illegal part. Sometimes I have clicked on links provided
by Google and ended up on a 403 page. Would this mean I am doing something illegal? I simply take it as ok, I try another page. Same with universes. Many universes do not let me enter, fine , I try another. I find it rather amusing that someone actually have time to sit and compare log files and ips; this in a company that claim to be to busy to help out customers or solve any problems. Guess I will have to connect through proxies when visiting OW for example, so I am not committing any crimes. Stupidity seems to grow all the time, I wonder what next; maybe we can only enter AW if we sit in a certain position infront of the computer, the same as we did when we installed the frigging software. then, AWI would've gotten no money from me whatsoever. -- --Bowen-- No of SETI units returned: 34 Processing time: 27 days, 8 hours. (Total hours: 656) www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu strike rapierJul 16, 2003, 3:18pm

You're wrong, INI files are supposed to be modified, that's
what the format has been designed for. Most of the INI file is not part of the AW delivery anyway. Beta testers even are encouraged to modify some INI file settings. Neither my AwStart nor the Russian one are illegal (well, duplicate name, sorry) as they do not modify any part of the AW software, they just change the configuration. The russian one even has been on the Russian AW web site for some time (that's where I found it by chance)! The only thing that might be a problem would be that I used the same name (not knowing there was already an awstart.exe). Maybe Calpantera was drunk when he wrote this telegram. I bet it would. I was not actually editing the ini file either, just
replaced it. I renamed the original ( I take I must be allowed to have my files named as I wish on my PC). Then I dropped the new ini file in. I must be allowed to store a text file where I wish on my PC and must be allowed to have it named as I wish. If AW-exe do choose to use the text file I have decided to store in a folder of my choose, instead of the one meant , it cannot be my fault, can it ? Technically, I can understand the intent of Calpantera's message. However,
even within AW's user guide, they recommend changing the aworld.ini, altering settings. See http://www.activeworlds.com/help//multiple_worlds.html - I'm sure it appears in more than one place. You can't have it both ways. You can't claim altering the aworld.ini is a violation of EULA, and at the same time recommend doing it within your own help files. Not part of the installed file set.
The EULA HAS to be installed if it is supposed to be valid and binding. Even Microsoft had to learn that. [View Quote] bowenJul 16, 2003, 3:46pm

OK, add functionality to allow us to change any part of our INI with
your AWStart application... we should be well within the limits if your program is also legal. Seeing as how DeadAIM and MSN+ are allowed, and you know how much legalwhores Microsoft and AOL are, why would editing an INI be so bad? AW would likely have no case if they brought everyone that's done it (they can't just bring Drac, they have to bring everyone.) -- --Bowen-- No of SETI units returned: 35 Processing time: 27 days, 15 hours.
