The Active World's Video 4 video has come out out, it is about 3mb download.
You can click on http://awtaz.net/airtv/videos/aw4-384.wmv to view it directly, or go to the website at http://www.aw31.netfirms.com for release notes, downloadable banners, play all 4 active world's videos. Later on I will have different formats like real and mpg makiSep 25, 2002, 8:08pm
wow, awesome...so much more smooth too, great job. One comment though, you
spelled Active Worlds with an apostrophe -- doesn't that show possession or compound active world is? I'd leave it at Activeworlds :) maki awmaki.com [View Quote] pineriverSep 25, 2002, 8:21pm
Its the Active World's Video, its the Active World that's taking possession
of the video. lol flashback to the 5th grade [View Quote] brockSep 25, 2002, 8:57pm

Only if you were signifying that the worlds within activeworlds had
posession. Since you are showing that it is the ActiveWorlds program (only one), it is Active World's. [View Quote] goober kingSep 25, 2002, 9:55pm
If you people really want to get technical, it should be ActiveWorlds's,
since there's no such thing as ActiveWorld. [View Quote] -- Goober King Leave the semantics to the professionals... robrod at prism.net katerineSep 25, 2002, 9:56pm
I of course have no clue about what would be correct but I find this video

Very nice, I must say you got some talent at doing this :)
So in support I contribute a mirror lol :) http://www.darkbirdie.com/aw/aw4-384.wmv keep up the good work -Mod [View Quote] dionSep 25, 2002, 11:09pm
LOL, look at this. :-P
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_apost.html That website says that there should not be an apostrophe showing possession unless it is a person. In this case, it should be described as "ActiveWorlds Video 4". :-P [View Quote] pineriverSep 26, 2002, 12:04am
The video could have some improvements, but thats like all of us, we make
things that can't be changed, and then we say "not bad". [View Quote] talisanSep 26, 2002, 12:54am
Wow, that video really looked nice. I wish the blurrier areas were quite not
as blurry, but I know you were working withing constraints. Really liked it though :) Good work! builderzSep 26, 2002, 1:34am

No no no, Goob..... Any possesive ending in the letter "s" is always
punctuated with just the apostrophe at the end of the word ( ActiveWorlds' ) ActiveWorlds's is incorrect.. that would be considered a conjunction of ( ActiveWorlds is ), which also would be incorrect btw. And any noun, (person, place or thing) which "ActiveWorlds" IS, is correctly used AS a possesive.... * thinks..... english teacher would be shocked I actually REMEMBER any of this crap* ;O) JB [View Quote] johnny b jbitt2atjuno.comSep 26, 2002, 9:08am
Terrific job Pine !!! :O) Tres' Cool !
A high res version of that with some of the greater AW worlds' stuff, plus some of the more elaborately built worlds would make a pretty neat commercial ! [View Quote] goober kingSep 26, 2002, 9:43am
Not sure what your English teacher is smoking but both ActiveWorlds's
and ActiveWorlds' would be correct. If a noun ends in "s", you have the option of using the second "s" or not. Not using the "s" might be more proper, but no one's going to kill you if you do. At any rate, it shouldn't have been used at all, since there was no "Video" in the actual video; it just said "ActiveWorld's" and nothing else. There's no way to tell what "ActiveWorld" (which isn't even a word) was possessing, so it shouldn't have been there in the first place. Great work once again, pineriver! I know you're probably not going to be
handing this to AWI any time soon, but if you ever plan to make a serious commercial out of this, I'd like to offer a couple suggestions: - I don't think anyone's going to go ga-ga over Chess and Checkers. If you want to mention them, just mention games in general and include other stuff like Bingo and AWGames. - Be sure to mention more community aspects, like some of the AWCommunity orgs and events. Gotta let people know that there's more to this place than just worlds and building! :) Other than that, keep up the good work! :) [View Quote] -- Goober King You paying attention, AWI?! This could actually HELP you!! robrod at prism.net bowenSep 26, 2002, 11:46am
This is making me think of when my English teacher drilled it into my head that
"fishes" was not the correct term to describe more than one fish. It seems both are accepted and I'm completely lost as to what's right. --Bowen-- [View Quote] goober kingSep 26, 2002, 2:06pm
Erm, "fishes" isn't correct either. The plural of "fish" is "fish", just
like the plural of "moose" is "moose", not "mooses". Anyone who says "fishes" is either trying to be funny or failed English. :P [View Quote] -- Goober King Thinking that AWUniv could use an English course... robrod at prism.net bowenSep 26, 2002, 2:09pm

Taken from dictionary.com and from the American heritage dictionary on my lap:
fish Pronunciation Key (fsh) n. pl. fish or fish·es ( <~~~~ fishes is the plural of fish... we were lied to) Any of numerous cold-blooded aquatic vertebrates of the superclass Pisces, characteristically having fins, gills, and a streamlined body. --Bowen-- goober kingSep 26, 2002, 2:17pm
Must be a British thing then. They're the ones who always have the
messed up words. ;P (Note to all anal Brits: I *know* American English is derived from British English. It's called a "joke", go look it up.) [View Quote] -- Goober King Maybe Brits spell it "jouke"... robrod at prism.net bowenSep 26, 2002, 2:22pm

LoL :). Why's it in our dictionaries?? *burns british fishes* Apparently it's the
plural for finch too, and finch falls under the same rule, you have many finch. I guess everything that's like that is pluralized to fishes. The moose plural will now be refered to as fishes, marklar (south park thing)? --Bowen-- sw chrisSep 26, 2002, 2:39pm
Nice. Very high production value I think. It would make a nice commercial.
The Good: - Sped up footage removed a lot of the jerkiness of mouse-controlled camera movements. - Used more than one transition effect. - Nice choice of music The Needs Improvement - Stick with one font. Nothing says professional like a standard font for use throughout your commercial, if indeed that was what you were going for. - I've never really been a fan of the glass breaking transition, probably because I've never seen it on TV. Again that might go back to professionalism, but I really don't know. To each his own. :) - If you're trying to market AW, people probably aren't going to go nuts over Chess and Checkers, especially since Internet-enabled versions of them have come with the last few generations of Windows. That part struck me as kinda cheesy. Focus more on community oriented things. The Cy Awards could get some airtime when things get straightened out over there. Chat of course is an all important staple of the active worlds experience, just like building. - Your water may be mistaken by potential customers as something that you can see in Active Worlds itself. The Bad and the Ugly - Nothing! For any other promotional videos, I can give you a teleport to a Titanic recreation an a recreation of Hyrule (which is the one I built). And of course who can forget New York? :) All in all a good effort. SW Chris Self-proclaimed film critic and Rama Mageesh of Guru :D [View Quote] bowenSep 26, 2002, 2:44pm

It the video was owned by Active Worlds then it should be "The Active
Worlds' video". If the video instead is about Active Worlds: "The Active Worlds video"... In my humble opinion. Rocambole (born French, was taught English by Norwegian teachers...) The way I know it, you have only the apostrophe when nouns (except names) end in "s". When it's a name, you *always* have apostrophy-s, even if the name ends in "s". KAH makiSep 26, 2002, 6:56pm
ummmmm I don't know why we really care about this ownership stuff... at the
end of the video is says "Active World's <next line> See what you've been missing" -- now, I don't see how that's showing ownership of any worlds, any videos, or anything. I'd leave it at Activeworlds or even just activeworlds, since it's saying to come see the program you've been missing, which is activeworlds. maki awmaki.com [View Quote] |
