I swear, you people just look for any excuse to bash the CYs, don't you?
The whole reason I posted that article was to clear up all the crap about "changing rules on a whim". If you actually read the *entire* article, rather than quoting out of context, you'd see that APB wasn't exactly in the right frame of mind when she approved the rules (which were made *after* all the nominations had come in, btw) and so she rejected them later after she realized the effect they would have on the CYs. The net result: No change! The rules are still the same as they've always been, and no further changes are forthcoming, at least for this round. If you people still want to believe that the CYs are corrupt or whatever after being presented with the facts, then you are truly delusional. As has already been pointed out, statements made in the CY Forums are
not official statements. And, as ambivalent pointed out, the rules on the Rules page haven't been changed since they were first posted. Therefore, NO CHANGE HAS OCCURRED! The rules were introduced, and then retracted, before they were ever entered in as official rules. Does that help clear up the confusion? And I'm not speaking on behalf of the CYs, just repeating what I already reported in my article. You'll have to talk to the Selection Committee about the Av category. [View Quote] -- Goober King Is it really that hard to understand? robrod at prism.net cy nominations outSep 3, 2002, 9:44am
You have got to be kidding me. When have you *ever* seen a forum where
posts were considered to be official committee rulings, unless there is a specific forum marked for such business? If no such forum exists, then nothing should be taken as official unless posted on the website. Otherwise, it's all just talk. I would think that to be common sense, but I guess that doesn't apply when you have an ax to grind... [View Quote] -- Goober King Might as well grind that ax on Cy's head! :P robrod at prism.net cy nominations outSep 3, 2002, 9:51am
My point is, the rules changed, and then changed back before they had
any sort of impact on the nominations. People were nominated using the old rules, and the selection committee chose their top 5 based on the old rules. That being said, I too question how some of the nominations got on the top 5, given that, from the beginning, Selection Committee members were exempt from winning a CY. That, and some of the top 5 aren't all that clear what's being nominated. (i.e. "Aylla" in the Av category) The only clue I have is from Daphne who said that APB essentially said that everyone was eligible. This, then, would be the *only* residual effect from the rule "changes". [View Quote] -- Goober King It does make you wonder... robrod at prism.net cy nominations outSep 3, 2002, 2:12pm
*sigh* Both you and paul misunderstand me. I meant "forum" as in a
portion of the *main* forum set aside for official committee business. Take, for lack of a better example, the SW City forums. Their main forum is divided into smaller forums by topic, and one of those topics happens to be for official town business only, including town policy changes. The CY Awards forum, on the other hand, has no such forum. The closest thing the CY forums have is the News forum, which is where Tauntaun made the announcement that started all this crap. When APB saw that the new rules would rule out so many people, she retracted them in a reply to that very same post. But since the new rules were never posted to the website, they were never made *official*. There was never any announcement on the website or in any forum designated for such a purpose announcing these new rules, so as far as present day is concerned, those rules never existed. And as far as investigative reporting goes, that's exactly what I did by posting that AWNews article here in the NGs. If you can't accept the words of APB and Daphne, then there's not much else I can tell you. Obviously, you never played Guess Who? before... Basically, the idea is
that each player gets a collection of pictures of people and then each player is given a second picture of one of the people in that set as their "it" man. Then, players take turns asking questions in an attempt to eliminate people from the group and find out who the "it" man is. (i.e. "Does your person wear glasses?" If the other person says 'no', then you can flip down all the people in your set that are wearing glasses, otherwise you can flip down all the people who *don't* have glasses) Whoever correctly guess who the other player's "it" man first, wins. Where Were You When...?
As I'm sure all of you have noticed, today is Sept. 11th, 2002: One year after the horrific events that changed a nation, and changed the world. While I'm could preach and pontificate about America and how its struggle is everyone's cause, it wouldn't be a very fitting way to remember those who lost their lives and loved ones on that tragic day. So instead, I will simply offer a story: The alarm went off. It was 7AM on a Tuesday, and that meant Psychology 101. I wasn't particularly thrilled to be taking that class, especially this early in the morning, but I needed it for my gen ed requirement and it certainly was more interesting than some other courses I've taken. I eventually rolled off my bunk around 7:30 and got my clothes on. Not having enough time for breakfast, I grabbed my bag of books and headed out the door, all while my roommate slept. As with most Psych classes, I barely remembered what was discussed as soon as I walked out of the classroom an hour and a half later. Feeling my stomach complaining, I walked down the hall towards the Student Union to grab my customary sausage, egg, and cheese muffin breakfast. As usual, the SU was abuzz with people coming and going, and I barely took notice, intent on getting my daily dose of grease and fat. After purchasing my breakfast, I ducked out the back door of the SU to avoid the club tables that always started getting set up around the SU front door at this time. In my current half-dead, hungry state of mind, I wasn't in the mood to get accosted by some club member waving fliers, condoms, or whatever else in my face. As I made the long trek back to my dorm room, I was greeted by the blustering Buffalo winds as they swept across the nearly treeless expanse of campus. I gritted my teeth and yelled at the wind under my breath, challenging it to knock me over. As with most windy days, the wind failed to do so this time and I made it back to my dorm in one piece, albeit a little ruffled. I arrived at my room around 9:30 and saw that my roommate had already left for his 9AM class. I dropped my bag on the floor and awakened my computer that I had left on overnight. Ahh, the beauty of a permanent T1 connection. As I was pulling all of my IM programs out of Away mode, I found a message from a teenage friend from AW that simply said "you watching the news?" I answered "No...", thinking that he was going to tell me that the news was reporting on some silly story or other. Instead, he responded "2 planes have crashed into the world trade center towers in newyork." I turned on the TV and was instead greeted by images the Pentagon, burning. We then spent the next hour swapping information as it was reported on TV, and I immediately messaged all of my friends and family who were online, asking if they saw what was happening. My brother just couldn't believe it all, responding simply with "shit!". My dad, who teaches at the Naval War College, couldn't go to work because the Navy base was on highest alert: Only essential government employees were allowed on base. My mother, who had to travel to DC that morning on business, informed me that her plane had landed just before the FCC had grounded all air travel. She said she could see the smoke of the Pentagon from her 6th floor office. She then said she was going to watch the news in the first floor lounge. She didn't feel safe on the 6th floor. My roommate came back from his class, having heard what had happened in class, just in time to see the first tower fall. My AW friend immediately messaged me "CBS just showed the tower falling. this is history." "This is war" I replied. I then got up from my computer and sat down in my roommate's recliner, and stayed there the rest of the day, eyes glued to the TV waiting to see what would happen next, only getting up to answer the occasional messages coming through my computer. My roommate informed me that they had canceled classes for the rest of day, but the announcement didn't even register with me. I just sort of nodded and mumbled "That's good." I'm not exactly known for being able to display my emotions, always trying to hide them behind a facade of calm and sarcasm, and this instance was no different. But instead of trying to just keep up appearances, I actually didn't know what to feel. I felt a chill go down my spine as I watched people jumping out of the Twin Towers, to their deaths. I felt a sense of snide "shit's-on" bravado against those who orchestrated the attacks, knowing in my heart that they would pay for this. I felt the feeling of "this isn't really happening", almost as if I was watching a movie. Oddly enough, I even felt a sense of pride when I heard that they had stopped an Amtrak train in Providence, RI looking for supporters of the hijackers (Being a native Rhode Islander, any time RI gets in the news, whether good or bad, is cool to me). The result of all these jumbled feelings was one of numb emptiness. In the end, I felt absolutely nothing. Though all the events registered in my mind: the thousands of deaths, the repercussions of these acts, the effects on my family, in my heart I felt nothing. That emptiness would remain with me until it was replaced with something else: pride. Pride in seeing my fellow countrymen coming together and standing up to those who would stand against us. Pride in seeing them come together to help each other, either by lining up to give blood or sign up for the armed forces. So, in the midst of all the sorrow and pain, I inwardly rejoiced, because I knew that, not only were we going to make it through this, but we would become stronger because of it. So, on this one year anniversary of the darkest day in American history, if not the world, I honor the memory of those who are no longer with us by praying for those who still are. Praying that our sense of unity won't disappear into the night like a passing fad. Praying that we will stand tall as one against all who would wish to see us fall, and truly be the *United* States of America. Everyone has a September Story. I encourage you to share yours as we all remember what we lost, and also what we found within ourselves. May you and yours find peace on this day, and may God continue to bless America. You seem to be a tad misinformed on some things, so let me see if I can
clear them up for you" [View Quote] AWI isn't allowing anything to "trickle down", as you put it. When AWI first introduced the rotate/move commands, they also modified the world server so that world owners could decide if they wanted other people using rotate/move in their worlds or not. AWI, in its infinite wisdom, decided to disable rotate/move for AlphaWorld. However, the prevention system had a rather huge flaw in it, which several resourceful builders managed to exploit. By the time AWI found out about this, the word had spread and quite a few builds were exploiting this bug. AWI responded by plugging that specific hole in the prevention system, but it wasn't long before someone found *another* hole in the system and exploited it. Every time AWI plugged a hole, it seemed as if another was discovered to take its place, and it'll probably only be a matter of time before someone finds another hole to replace the one AWI just recently patched. So, I don't know where you got this idea of discrimination from, but if you want to blame someone for it, blame Roland and the AWI programmers for not being able to build a fool-proof prevention system. Though, if MrGrimm can convince the boys upstairs to enable rotate/move in AW, this whole argument becomes moot. :P Also, the people clamoring to preserve AW weren't complaining about the addition of new objects and textures. What they were complaining about was that some of the objects/textures were *changed*, thereby affecting older builds. Since some of these builds were built by people who may no longer be around, they felt it was unfair because they couldn't do anything to fix it. > Thoughts on Tourists > At one time, because of cruelty and intimidation being used to manipulate > me, I personally felt tourists should not be allowed in some worlds. This I'll agree with, as keeping tourists out of AW deprives them of the one world (save possibly AWTeen) that might convince them to become an AW citizen. As for speaking out against disrespect, that's never a problem and it should never be seen as such. If you don't stand up for yourself, you'll get walked all over for the rest of your life, even by tourists. > Thoughts on Processor Size for AW > As for my processor being too small, my computer needing upgrading, let me > point out to you that the size of my processor is fine for the newest > version of AOL, newest version of Earthlink, newest CD of Atari Arcade Hits > (and for that matter, nearly all Hasbro Interactive Games available), > StarCraft, I could go on and on. Ultimately, if we do not make > allowance for those that have smaller computers, it will not contribute in a > positive way to the development of the AW Community. As everyone else has been saying, upgrade or die. If you can afford to buy a laptop/computer, then you can afford to upgrade it every once in a while. This doesn't mean you have to buy the latest and greatest stuff just to keep up, but when the programs you use start outgrowing your system, then it's time to get some new hardware to go with your new software. This is the way it's always been in the world of computers, and this is the way it will always be. Better get used to it. -- Goober King Can you discriminate against laziness? robrod at prism.net Answering Telegrams About Commands, Processor Size, etcSep 13, 2002, 10:04am
While I'm all about having a flair for the dramatic, methinks you're
taking things a *bit* too seriously. I agree that exclusion, injustice, and oppression are wrong, but what you're talking about are not those things. It's not exclusion to make software that demands better hardware, it's progress. While it's generally regarded as good programming practice to make software work on the widest range of platforms available, it's not required, and in some cases, especially in the world of 3D, it's nearly impossible to accommodate *all* platforms. It's not oppression to disallow rotate/move in AW, it's a precaution. AWI had a valid concern that the move/rotate commands could be used to vandalize other builds, since the world registry can't take them into account when judging encroachment, so they disabled it in the most popular building world in the Universe. But again, since most people who managed to break through the prevention system and use rotate/move only used it for positive building purposes, one can hope that AWI will remove that restriction. It's not injustice to prevent tourists from visiting other worlds, it's an incentive. While I agree that AWI should allow tourists into more AWI worlds, the only reason tourists exist is to give new users a chance to preview the program before they buy a citizenship. If you give tourists too much "power" in terms of ways to participate and build, they'll have no reason to buy a citizenship and AWI will continue to lose money. So while exclusion, injustice, and oppression should be wiped out in the real world, here in the virtual world it's rather hard to take those ideas seriously. In the end, it's all just bits and bytes and if you don't like the way things are run, you can always speak with your feet and your wallet and take your business elsewhere. I think Weebo's drunk. He hasn't posted a coherent message about this
ordeal at all. :P As for the CYs, I think the Committee needs to get a backbone and just stop trying to please everyone. Since it's plainly obvious that some people will *never* be happy with the CYs, no matter how they're run, why bother trying to please them? If they had stuck to their guns at the beginning and kept the Selection Committee noms up, we would've had a couple whiners withdraw their noms and that would've been the end of it. Now, the damage has been done and canceling the CYs altogether does *not* fix the problem. Of course, the main problem with the CY Awards is with ABP's insistence to involve the community in all of this. Think of it this way: If the contestants in a judging contest were also allowed to decide how the judging was done and who the judges were, don't you think there'd be a conflict of interest somewhere? ABP should have kept things internal by hand-picking her successor and the CY & Selection Committee staffs. Then the SC could filter through the noms while the CY Committee makes sure the SC gets the job done, post the Top 5 for each category, and then have the community vote from those choices. I suppose now would be a good time to give everyone a heads up as to our
situation with AWNews.com As some of you may know, we've been in the process of transferring all AWNews property from Cybor, the former owner, to myself. The website hosting has been secured, but the awnews.com domain name is another matter entirely. The story goes like this: It didn't seem as if there was any straightforward way to transfer the domain from one owner to another. So, Cybor decided to just let the domain run out and I would have to pick it up when it went on the public market. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a straight answer out of register.com, the domain's registrar, as to when the domain would go public. Still, since all the other "awnews" domains (awnews.net, awnews.org, etc) have been available for months, I figured no one would go for awnews.com, so I didn't watch it very closely. Boy, was that a mistake. On Sept. 8th, soon after the domain went public, some domain-grubbing outfit called MostWantedDomains.com snatched it up and posted it as being "up for sale". When I asked them how much they wanted for it, they told me $1,250. I essentially told them to stuff it, since I would've only had to pay $35 for it had I picked it up in time, and that they'll never find another buyer for that domain. Which brings us to now. Since I doubt MWD.com is going to be generous enough to simply drop the domain, we're in the process of trying to decide on a new domain name for AWNews. Possible suggestions include domains like aw-news.com and awnews.org. If any of you has a suggestion you think would be a) easy to remember, and b) has something to do with "AWNews", feel free to post it here and we'll consider it. Thanks for your help, and we're sorry for any disruption/inconvenience all of this may have caused you. :-/ -- Goober King AWNews.? While I must confess that I'm surprised at all this outpouring of
support for AWNews, I would rather not make a huge deal out of all this. In the grand scheme of things, it's just a bunch of letters and we can easily just change our name to AWNews.whatever. As for going after MWD.com, I have never owned the AWNews.com domain. It's always been owned by Cybor, so if anyone could take up legal action over all this, it would have to be him. And considering that his interest levels in AW right now are zero, I don't see that happening any time soon. And even if that Cyber Squatter law gets passed, I get the feeling that it won't be retro-active. So I've learned my lesson and will be more vigilant when it comes to domains. And while MWD's tactics may not be fair, I'll just have to hope that the lack of buyers will make them release the domain. In the meantime, we move on and get ourselves a new domain and a new name. I'm sure everyone here will be perfectly capable of updating any AWNews links they may have when the time comes. :) [View Quote] -- Goober King With no more CYs, Bit must be looking for something to do... ;P robrod at prism.net AWNews.com Domain NameSep 18, 2002, 6:52pm
