Gives a cool first impression when you visit it without Flash:

The requested URL /noflash.html was not found on this server. You may
want to try http://secondlife.com instead.

And this url then gives the same error <lol>.

After looking at the pictures they have on their site, I'm unimpressed with
Second Life, and I'm even more unimpressed with AW. Why? Because
everything that's in those pictures can be done with AW 3.4, if it were
released and if someone designs the right objects and uses all the new
features. The water there doesn't even look as impressive as AW's.

I would try it out to see for myself, but I can't find anywhere on their
site where they give some sort of tourist access - perhaps someone could
point out where I should go? Hopefully they won't require me to give them
my credit card number.

[View Quote] Beta access (until June 23rd) is free tho they require a credit card number (it is not charged except a $1 temp charge which should be credited back)

If it's free, then they don't need a credit card number. Why do they need
$1 when they will give it back? Also, $1 is such a small price it is almost
meaningless.

Second Life has a lot of things not available in AW (even 3.4), like online
creation of objects/avatars and a physics engine. On the other hand, it is
more expensive (there is no tourist category), and land is purposely scarce
(you must contribute to the community to get more).

If you sign up now for Open Beta, you can get Beta reductions on the regular
monthly subscription. (You'll need a visa card, though.)

They only accept Visa? That's some way to get people to join. What about
people like me who are satisfied with their Mastercards and Discovers and
don't need any more cards?

"visa card" = Visa, Mastercard, etc.

I think they only want 18+ people signing up for Beta, so thats why they ask
for CC details. Kind of silly if you ask me.

[View Quote] Still, it's been my experience that Visa is accepted in more places than
Mastercard or American Express. That just sounded like a commercial...

yea it is, and I figured that is what they wanted to do, but there are a lot
of 18 year olds out there without a credit card.

Jun 19, 2003, 5:28pm
[View Quote] Had a good look around the site, and for my purposes probably wouldn't be
suitable for me. My reasons...

o The limited land to build on,
o The need to pay taxes on the stuff you own.
o Basically the restrictions around the place and the way it appears to be
attempting to mimic real life.
- Prefer to do a lot of things in real life rather than in a virtual
space.
o Additionally true broadband (ADSL) pricing in NZ is still around 12c US a
meg, has been for donkey ears and is unlikely to change.
- Monopolized Telco market
- 128kbit crippled version of DSL, is the best I have to offer.
o Proprietary standard and all work hosted on their servers.
- Work not portable
- All the effort is at the mercy of the survival of the company, company
kicks the bucket, all work possibly goes with it
- Where as if you made something with Atmosphere, and Adobe decided to
pull atmosphere. at least it's still there and still viewable

My interests are aimed at more creating stuff and worlds that friends can
gather in at the end of a hard day rather than living another life online.
Well basically create a world you can escape to and not be burdened by real
life like hassles of having to pay taxes etc.

Despite that, Suitable for the right people, and who want something between
a MMORPG and a 3D Chat, but the ultimate test is, "is
it able to survive?". A few things that need to be watched...

o Apparently the company running this is only a "small start up"
o Most probably funded by venture capitalists expecting that their
investment will bring riches
- Current climate, not friendly to these sorts of 3D systems.
- High failure rate, Sims online sort of failed to impress
- Numerous starts up Competing for a currently small market, such as
there.com
- If it fails to deliver, then the people funding the project are going to
want some answers, and possibly pull funding bringing the project to
it's knees.
o With is short time on the stage, there is currently a high chance of
failure, I guess it's all part of business, taking risks..
o As a result of these points, I probably wouldn't at this stage put my
heart and soul in to the place until
- It goes public and is officially released and has at least survived a
year
- Matured into a reputable product that is well known on the Internet.
o Last thing, since it's free at the moment, I realize there are probably
tons of people in there right now (can some one who is actually in
there confirm this?), but once they set the pricing, things are likely to
change.
- Pricing currently unknown
- If subscription is too high, then too many people will leave creating
a dead environment and even more will leave because it's dead.
Catch 22 situation

By all means, If I could sign up, I probably would do a few things here and
there just to test the software out and establish my presence in case it
does become a hit, but wouldn't go all out as of yet making it my main hobby
etc.

I don't have a Credit card, so I think they should stop calling it a FREE
beta, since obviously it's NOT.

So, after June 23, are all those people who did submit a credit card number
going to get charged full price even if they didn't like the program? What
about the ones who didn't like it and went on their way after testing it
out? Are they going to find a new charge they didn't count on on their
credit card bill?

I already don't like the way they manage the place. I think i'll stick with
AW :)

[View Quote] I would never use a program that required a credit card number simply to
use even if it included a free trial. I'd rather not give the company a
cc# until I plan to use the product.

Linden Labs used the credit card number for Beta identification purposes
only. (It was hashed into a unique number & kept that way.) They never
charged me for Beta testing. And when I sign up for the official game on
June 23, I will be able to use a credit card or other form of payment.

Anyone who is as creative as you are, imagine, should at least be tempted by
the ease of creating new objects and avatars online, in the game. Plus the
most creative players, who are good at design and texturing, make the most
Second Life dollars, and can afford to buy the most land (or gamble it away
in the casinos, etc.). Check out the website at secondlife.com.

I can check out the web site from now till dooms day. I still dont' have a
credit card so I still can't check out the program :)

To bad they dont' have a trourist option like AW. But then those with credit
cards would be the best candidates as potential clients after the beta
stage, so I guess it makes good buisness sence to only accept those who have
credit cards. Aren't there any other ways to id betas then a credit card
number?

LOL. No, in SL my last name is Wu. In AW I don't have a last name, and I
used to be the Mars correspondent for the AW Newsletter. I still spend a lot
of time in Philae, the Ancient Egyptian world I built, and in Midnight Bay,
the city I made in COFMeta. I wonder whether the Lindens think I am an AW
spy; I was interviewed by one of them, and I spent a lot of time talking
about the good things in AW. :o)

It is also possible and people under 18 have credit cards too, so yes,
totally ignorant. Just another company trying to be "typical".

AFAIK, in Canada you can have a CC with your parent's authorization if you
are under 18.

[View Quote] Here as well, I don't even think you need a parent's authorization as
long as you pay taxes.
