AW Abuse (Community)
AW Abuse // Community
Jan 23, 2004, 9:29pm
To Staff and Citizens of Activeworlds,
I'm writing to let you know about problems in AW affecting community. Abuse
that happens with people in bold - your people. Corruption is taking place.
Also, events that are held such as in AWHS are not done in fairness to
others regarding meeting times and assignments. Two nights ago, I was
ejected in Alpha World for doing nothing wrong. I received no warning and
no PK was present. I had to sign off my dial-up ISP and log back onto my
account to get another IP address to be able to enter AW again. You, the
Company, has not been as generous towards community as you are with
enhancing your program. An example of this is downloads are so slow with a
56 k modem that most people give up trying to visit other worlds, even the
gate or alpha world. It takes a very long time. Business within Active
Worlds isn't promoted with the current setup. I'm not sure what would help
that, maybe allowing more space in ! at Mart would be a start. I tried to find
space to start a little business and I never could find one. Events held in
worlds other than Alpha World regarding New Years and the like I do not feel
is appropriate. In order for people to feel as if they are a part of the
community, some of these hardships must be lifted. I wish to see AW as
populated as it once was. I wish to see elections, and a governing body
with high moral standards all for one purpose, to see AW prosper.
Sincerely, The Lady

not news tome that happened to me twice last month and reported it to a PK
and PK looked into it and no PK was even signed in at the time and both
times I was not saying any thing the second time it was done after I tported
to a build of mine in alpha, it was after I appeared where I teleported it
said I have been ejected so I think it might be some sort of clitch. Next
time it happens note the time and date and so on of when it happened so they
can investigate it further

Might be an AW flaw, and not intentional ;) It's happened before. Like i
ejected one person, and for some reason three others got ejected, and i have
no idea why.

I remember one time in the JunoDome I was ejected for flooding.
I hadn't been saying anything! LoL!!!
Turns out, everybody got ejected by the bot for flooding. It was a glitch.

Did you not read what they said? They never intended to create a community.
And it's ppl's fault if they use 56k instead of DSL.

"Corruption is taking place.

I sent out an email to everyone for AWHS (including you)recently asking what
time would be good for everyone for another meeting and for everyone to give
me feedback on a good time for them. Do you even read your emails?? We
haven't had a meeting in a year or so anyways. Do you think things through
thoroughly before you post??

Way to go girl, My sentiments exactly. This is a partial bit of the GK
issue and what needs to be done to fix it. Say a President of AW by
election, a Cabinet elected by the same thta elected the President, and
so on, all by the people that populate the world, not just the ones that
are cits gk or pk, but all tourists alike. In the AWG there is no
Teleport that is Tourist Friendly so why are there any at all, most cits
know how to use the program, most gks pks have been there long enough to
know the ins and outs of the worlds, but there is also a problem, being
biased towards one person and discriminatory to the next. As for the
Program well its a great program yes, and being on a Cable Modem
sometimes the system acts like I am on a 300bps dial up. So the Speed of
the connection or the type of connection really is not the problem. GOF
and JPG files are musch smaller and better to use because a GIF can be
animated and so can JPG but why convert them to rwx, use teh initial
format and the system can be faster, the GIF is a Smaller file and only
iuses a top color fill of 256 colors, jpg uses whatever you put in it,
but is also larger when it has more color. The program may be updated
though when 3.5 hits the Shrink Wrap stage and maybe they have fixed the
hardware incompatabilites too. So who knows? It is anybodys guess as to
what the next version of the program brings, and what it may require to
use. Microsoft will be removing support and updates for 98Se and
earlier. so all users will be forced by Microsoft to upgrade at a
nominal cost. So now what, I have to spend 199.99 to update my software,
and of course if the hardware I have is not up to par and all, then I
would probably havge to spend what 350.00 to maybe even 900.00 to
upgrade all of my system to use this program?? Hmmmm....wonders of the
intellect of programmers, and why it is they can install something, but
when you uninstall it, oh my, there is so many things left, DLL's VXD's
folders, referances to the program in the Registry, and more. Somewhere
they need to make the uninstall work just lkike the install, it puts the
files in the right place, why can't it remove the same files it
installs??

Excuse me but I used to be on 56k and I can say the downloads went
faster than I expected them to. Whenver I saw a world full of detailed
custom objects I always thought "This'll take a while to load"... no, I
just had to spend 5 minutes doing something else in another window while
I waited, or if there was enough people I would just focus on the chat.

Yea, I had dial up until about a year and half ago or so..when it comes to
AW, I hardly even noticed a difference. When you download something its
cached anyways, it might be a big deal if you had to download it every time
you enter a world, but you dont. and in reality, Im sure theres a few worlds
you visit regularly anyways.

long time ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I had dial-up. My world was
and is a large download. In order to avoid all the long waits after a cache
dump, I used to keep a file copy of the cache of my world separately on
desktop. I would empty cache, come into my world, load the whole thing, then
make a copy of that cache. That way I could explore as many worlds as I
wished, then when the cache became overloaded, I would delete the aw cache
copy and replace it with my stored copy of my world. Reloading the cache
(sometimes daily) would then take 1 minute instead of 10 reloading directly
from aw. That way I could visit as many worlds as I liked, then quickly
empty and reload the cache when needed (without crashing).
This can be done for any world. Choose your favourite world or worlds, load
its cache, and keep it as a spare. It is one way of surviving the dial-up
blues.
