NEW AlphaWorld - Could It Be??? // Communitypc hamsterOct 25, 2002, 5:08am
Hi everyone:
Had just paid a visit to AW GZ and noticed there was an ad for a NEW AlphaWorld. I'm wondering A). If it's just simply too good to be true B). If it's just me and/or C). If it REALLY IS true, does anyone ANYONE have ANY idea when it'll be rolled out and what new features (if any) will it have??? I myself would LOVE to see a 3.3 compliant AlphaWorld complete with roads and other objects that you can bend, twist and turn as you please (this would REALLY be helpful in be able to design cloverleafs which are FAR better than the one on North Pratt Boulevard at the River Of Lite Expressway in Hamsterville) as well as to be able to build UNDERGROUND (I know just what SW Chris must be thinking here.... :-)). Anyhow, if ANYONE has any info, PLEASE DO POST!!! :-) Cheers for now everyone :-) PC Hamster kelleeOct 25, 2002, 5:16am

unfortunately, you have to pay for everything, there is no local teleports,

Hi everyone:
[View Quote] > unfortunately, you have to pay for everything, there is no local teleports, > and you don't have much money... Not only that, but you can't hardly build a city there unless you hangout there literally 24/7/365. :-( But it's a good thing that the money is only virtual though, but that's not saying a whole lot. :-/ It all goes back to the ol' "moving cities" debate IMHO.... I think if they were to move the existing cities from the old AlphaWorld to the New AlphaWorld GRADUALLY over a period of time AND THEN let people buy land with virtual money to build their home (and put those towns with not many builds or builders, such as mine, at the top of the list until they no longer need to be there). But then too....OTOH....I suppose one could simply build a New AW extension of their existing town too (especially in cases such as SW City and Mr. E's Clearfield just to name a few) simply by adding a teleporter (though admittedly it won't look very good). However though....Having said all that, I don't think there's any doubt about it that the old AW, which has served the AW Community well for so many years, will eventually have to give way to the New AW. Hopefully by then, some (if not all) of the MANY wonderful cities and towns will have a home on New AW. :-) Just my $.02 worth :-) PC Hamster goober kingOct 26, 2002, 1:22am
Erm, if you actually read the link that kellee provided, NewAW is *not*
going to replace the old AW. NewAW is basically a virtual experiment, and if it succeeds, it will expand. But NewAW is so totally different from the old AW that a comparison between the two is almost impossible. If anything, NewAW would server as a "summer home" of sorts to those who "live" in the regular AW. Just hope it does not end up like that other last aw experiment the
"HomePages" Just hopt AW does Pw the object path also as I can guarantee that some Universes will be in and download it as soon as its open, Thus making the "ecpererment a waste of time. [View Quote] agent1 webmaster@shatteredplattersdotcomOct 26, 2002, 12:02pm
NewAW has much more than just new objects. It uses a custom world server to do quite a bit of the work for the world's features.

I did Goober. However I think that as AW improves the browser, the old AW will look more and more outdated and will EVENTUALLY have to be retired. Hopefully by then, most (if not all) of the objects will be migrated in some form over to the New AW, which will be ANYTHING but an experiment. The major problem AW will encounter during such a migration process will be builds (and in some cases entire towns) created by people who are no longer citizens, but have yet to make the NAC list. But then too, between AWCC and the AWHS, the builds could be placed under the auspicies of either group. Alternatively, AW could also award such builds to the cit who owns the nearest adjacent builds and/or sponsor and "Adopt-A-Build" program whereas cits can place their name into the ring to "adopt" or be "awared" such a build much like WebRing does (or claims it does) with site rings which have been abandoned. In any case, the build would have to meet a set criteria (or a portion thereof) so that builds owned by cits whose cit expired less than a certain period of time don't wind up losing their builds simply due to credit card problems encountered during the renewal process. In other words, the cit would have to have been expired for SEVERAL MONTHS with no hope of renewal before such a build makes the adoption list. An adoption program would not only preserve the build, but also give current cits the ability to improve on them as needed too. :-). Okay gang....I'm through now. You can now go ahead with the process of calling me insane or whatever.... :-) Cheers for now :-) PC Hamster johnny b jbitt2atjuno.comOct 27, 2002, 9:41am

AW isnt goint to retire anything..... havent since 1995 and I highly doubt
they're going to start now..... Think seriously for a moment about the huge number of citizens who have builds there ( in the TENS of thousands, including NAC builds ) I doubt they'd be so heartless as to delete all that...... plus it's called "history" Alpha World is just that.... the FIRST world....been there since the inception and I'm pretty sure the reason it still IS here, has more to do with that alone, than anything else. It's a showcasing of the company's product's evolution. To think that they'd just delete it, after keeping it all these years, is just ridiculous... > > The major problem AW will encounter during such a migration process will be builds > (and in some cases entire towns) created by people who are no longer citizens, but > have yet to make the NAC list. I personally wouldnt want someone else taking ownership of my hard work and many hours spent building / learning TO build, in Alpha... Sure..... see a great build, grab it for yourself.... sheesh..... think about it....... I'd rather see it gone, or go NAC than have some other knucklehead take "ownership" of my old builds If it's such a great build, why should someone else who did nothing, be allowed to put their name on it.......... *rolls eyes* > > Okay gang....I'm through now. Wow, I think someone has a major case of imagination. There are nearly a 100 people testing NewAW and the new AW3.4 browser right now and I think would all concur that there will be no migrated property from AW to NewAW. This includes the OP and Builds. 99% of all AW builds would never have a chance of fitting onto a 3x3(20click square) property in NewAW. And most of the old style objects from AW would not mesh with the cleaner and less ridged looking objects found in NewAW. The concept of the 2 worlds is completely different. In AW I have nearly half a million objects I've placed... at the current rate of exchange in NewAW, that's roughly 50,000,000 credits I've spent ;) No way in heck can I earn that much in NewAW in my entire lifetime ;) You will never see massive builds in NewAW. :) No doubt the current system of earning credits may change, and the cost of objects to build with will change on a per object basis. AW will remain for years to come I believe. Too many people have spent too much time in there building their labors of love, and I doubt that will ever stop! tony mOct 28, 2002, 2:48am

AlphaWorld was the founding world of ActiveWorlds itself--do you really think they're gunna scrap it? >The major problem AW will encounter during such a migration process will be builds (and in some cases entire towns) created by people who are no longer citizens, but have yet to make the NAC list. But then too, between AWCC and the AWHS, the builds could be placed under the auspicies of either group. What migration process? NewAW != AlphaWorld. They're two completely different worlds. I don't want someone who has been in AW for 5 minutes to take my buildings that took 5 months to do just because I decided AW wasn't my place to be anymore. |
