Are there any sorts of bots like proxies that work through YOUR Avatar?
....As though you would 'become' the bot and have manual control over bot-like capabilities? Proxy Bots?Aug 6, 2005, 6:50am
You see, I got the idea from Furcadia, actually.
In furcadia, bots ARE proxies. They log into the 'universe' using the client. They can be Without a client, but by default they're basically just .... a program that handles the client directly and sort of functions as a go-between with the client and server. I got a telegram from somebody saying that this was ILLEGAL or something >_>; I actually... did NOT know that. But... this doesn't CHANGE the activeworlds program, really... Heck, I don't even know if Furcadia's definition of a bot even Matches Activeworlds' definition... I guess what I was asking for was more of a utility that controls my avatar for me automatically in ways that I can define through a console on the side. So that's bad, huh? [View Quote] Proxy Bots?Aug 7, 2005, 11:43pm
Well, the reason I'd like this would be... so I could sort of program my Own
avatar to act in certain ways that a bot can, responding to commands without me having to sit here and type them out myself. Or for instance if a friend tells me to follow them, I'd be able to tell my ... ME-BOT... to follow them while I'd be free to type, talk to them, or look around when it's not explicitly controlling my heading and velocity. The bot would be sort of... run from a GUI off on the side (an external program), but it would manipulate my AV and see the 'world' through my AV. Who knows o_o maybe somebody might think it's a great idea and pick it up! I'd love that ^_^ [View Quote] Avatar affected by moveSep 4, 2004, 4:15am
Why bother with a whole physics engine thing? If AW Can move objects that
easily, why can't it move user perspectives too? The technology has been around for years. We don't need friction and inertia to be perfectly emulated. It just frustrates me so much to see people arguing about how hard it would be to make everything work just as it would in real life down to the molecular level when that isn't even what we're asking for. I'm sorry if I stepped out of line there, but... why can't move commands be applied to avatars? And it's such a basic request, too! Even when AW came out, just about every 3d engine demanded some sort of function for objects that move users around! So it WOULDN'T be simple to make a moving object offset AV Location by its own movement? [View Quote] Command arraySep 4, 2004, 1:24am
To create a sequence of motions with Astart Astop, you must have a new
instance of the object at each stage of its motion... essentially having one object move to certain coordinates where it lines up with a second instance, switches off and switches the new instance on, where the new instance executes an action. It may be horribly inefficient, but it's still possible. If you like, T-gram me and I'll show you what I mean ^_^ [View Quote] Movement Speed ThrottleSep 4, 2004, 3:28am
I remember a long time ago, People were able to blast across the landscape
at immense rates of speed using Mouse Move in combination with holding Ctrl and hovering. Why on earth was this removed? It was wonderful! It used to be called maching. Now traveling in AW is just a teensy bit harder. It used to be a 'glitch'. Would it be very hard for them to remove the fix? I'm sure I'm not the only person who would appreciate the ability to mach again. Also, a wonderful alternative would be some sort of Slider on the controls bar that allows you to set your own movement rate, for advanced users who know what they're doing. Or even just a box where you can enter a magnitude for your movement rate--set it as high or low as you want! Sometimes, holding Control just isn't enough. Is this really so much to ask? Movement Speed ThrottleSep 4, 2004, 4:18am
O_O like a secondary turbo button! That'd actually do exactly what I'd be
looking for. Gosh, I wish I could just go into the AW exe and tweak it myself (through a friend who is a programmer), but god forbid I make it BETTER than it already is--oh LORD no! heheh ~_^ [View Quote] <no subject>Aug 3, 2005, 1:01pm
Pipe Dreams are distant "I wish" scenarios that have little to no chance of
ever happening with a miracle. Me winning the lottery is sort of a pipe dream. SW City being given complete and unlimited control of Alphaworld indefinitely is almost the living definition of a pipe dream.... for the people of SW City, at least. RWX UtilityAug 3, 2005, 1:21pm
It certainly would be nice if the team programming activeworlds could go a
few minutes out of their way sometime if they're bored and create a Renderware text editor with a realtime-updating object display panel, text color-coded highlights for different categories of text (commands, arguments, values, comments) and perhaps some sort of... template/guide for the 'anatomy' of a renderware file. It'd just be... nice. y'know? Toss that in with the AW installer or even as a seperate download. If they're investing so much in renderware the least they can do is provide a little boost in user-friendliness, right? RWX UtilityAug 4, 2005, 7:40am
No easy task....
The reason for my horrible misconception, which I apologize for profusely, is that we have a viewer: AW. The browser. It's just very cumbersome to use AS a viewer. However, AWI has access to the source code. Would that have made it easier to create a renderware viewer that could be somewhat a 'spinoff' from the Activeworlds Browser? I know it's not as easy as copypasting some code, but... Well i'm still just real surprised that AWI hasn't already done something about this themselves. It would bring so much user innovation... AW would have even more modeler people. GOOD modelers if they had software as versatile and flexible as that to learn from. right? I absolutely love that you've taken the matter into your own hands, though, Just In. [View Quote] Adjustible FOVAug 4, 2005, 8:53pm
I notice that in either direction (horizontal to horizontal, vertical to
vertical), the browser's Field of View is hard-wired set to 90º or less. ....Could it be possible for us to perhaps find the capability to ADJUST it? I certainly would very much appreciate the peripheral vision if that's possible ^_^ say, defining it in the options to be anywhere from 1º to 180º? Of course, both of those would be CRAZY extreme, but I can see the use for it. I know there are some INTERNAL controls for the field of view because when you go from first person mode to third, it narrows slightly so you might get close to the same FOV, but the function that controls it (to my knowledge) is not accessable to users. Could it be made so? or, could a utility be made that adjusts it from the outside somehow? Panoramic shots are fun. Help us rally to bring our sky backAug 2, 2005, 9:45pm
Hey... Maybe if people built things pretty enough in the first place, they
wouldn't NEED an ugly backdrop to make their cyberslum z-buffer spooge look slightly less craptastic in contrast! Commie's build looked absolutely -stunning- with the new backdrop... If a beautiful advancement in Alphaworld's aesthetics finally exposes just how ugly all the garbage we've built up in the past ten years really is, I say that's an improvement! O_O Truth is good! If the world's builds can't live up to a better sky, the answer is simple; replace them with newer, better builds that -honor- the spirit of ingenuity and advancement rather than DISGRACE IT. How much more sense is there to make? It's practically self-evident. Where's that choir I'm preaching to...? [View Quote] Help us rally to bring our sky backAug 4, 2005, 8:23pm
Heh... sadly though, I seem to remember seeing the AWHS remove pretty
vandalism from their precious trash heaps :( Alphaworld Ground Object [HTML]Aug 2, 2005, 11:24pm
.....In my opinion, just about everything I've seen preserved by the AWHS
is.. garbage. I honestly wished after seeing each and every one of those ancient builds that Alphaworld had some protocoll built in that would FRAG a building say, three to five years after the cit has gone inactive. Didn't people have BRAINS back in 1995? or... eyesockets with EYES in them? Did Z-buffering magically not exist or something? did all the objects magically ALWAYS fit eachother corner to corner perfectly? 'cos whatever used to make it look so darned worth-remembering is LONG DEAD. And furthermore, a good portion of that NAC Crap is just EMPTY SPACE. Ground! Ground laid out as far as the eye can see with absolutely positively NOTHING interesting on it -_- it's a disgraceful waste of space. If SOME people want to keep their old builds around for posterity, how about they pay for their own damned cits back and RENOVATE them so they don't make me want to gouge my eyes out every time I stumble across them? NACbuilds should be deletable like tourist builds. That's what I've got to say and I'm stickin' to it. [View Quote] Free Activeworlds PR!Aug 3, 2005, 12:39pm
GSK's movie for the AWEC festivalAug 2, 2005, 9:37pm
Am I the only person to whom it looks... bad, really really really really
really REALLY bad? everybody else seems to love GSK's movie submission but .... whenever I look at it, it's like I'm watching someone walk through Orton Strip Mall in SW City with 200 meter vis in software render mode >_< AW around me is running rather smoothly at 20 or more frames per second, though, and the surrounding environment is not jerky at all whatsoever; the movie itself reports an fps of around 12 to 17 (though the footage LOOKS like two frames per second--at least to me.) I like to give people the benefit of a doubt... I want very badly to believe that I'm simply not viewing GSK's movie at optimum performance. Therefore, I NEED somebody to prove to me that it isn't... well... crap. When I look at it in AW, I see crap. I would very much appreciate a URL from which I can download the movie MANUALLY and watch it through a stable, completely un-bogged movie player on my pc without any possibility of interferance... because I honestly want to believe that a winning prize was given to a turd. GSK's movie for the AWEC festivalAug 3, 2005, 12:38pm
As insulting as my post was, and as refreshingly uncharacteristic it was of
me to post something that offended someone, I'm here to see if GSK's movie DOESN'T suck, not to hear people threaten me about if it does. If you wanna kill somebody over a bad movie, kill who made it or something >_> But I digress. Seriously. Can you or ANYBODY supply me with a download link so I can see it outisde of AW just in case AW was making it underperform somehow? If my speaking up about this accidentally changes some opinions, well, that wasn't my intention. I want MY opinion changed--I prefer to think highly of people and you can be damned sure my behavior improves once weights like this are lifted off of me, and the only thing that has a shot of improving my outlook of GSK's movie is to download it, as a file, from a server, permanently onto my hard drive until I see fit to delete it, where I can view it in a compatible program of my choosing that does not have the memory-sucking capabilities of Activeworlds. I already asked GSK if he could send me the movie. He said he gave it to AWEC >_> and doesn't have a copy anymore. That somewhat puzzled me, but all in all it means I need somebody -ELSE'S- help with this, preferably the URL in the media command of that sign. Now, is there Anybody Anywhere who KNOWS Anybody Anywhere who MIGHT give me that link so I can see this thing for its true colors and perhaps respect GSK's work rather than doubt it!? [View Quote] GSK's movie for the AWEC festivalAug 4, 2005, 7:44am
Yes, yes ^^; THANK YOU so much for giving me the benefit of a doubt... I
found the typo too but ... I almost felt it was too late... wish you could go back and edit posts within a few minutes of just putting it there. *sigh* oh well. LtBrenton, your faith has restored MY faith, in the rest of humanity... at least a little bit. Believe me, reading what you said made my day. I did indeed mean that "I honestly DON'T want to believe that the winning prize was given to a turd." Again... Thank you. (Even i'm surprised at how much that meant to me... heh :D ) [View Quote] GSK's movie for the AWEC festivalAug 4, 2005, 7:46am
Yes, Yes, I see it now ^_^ Thank you for the reminder, Richard.

You're definitely right, chris... I let my worst enemy, a bad mood, deflect
my better judgement :( I am ashamed that I said such cruel things about GSK's movie... though I certainly wouldn't like to assume he's a newbie. There's Always room for improvement and I always used to pride myself on believing that Everybody can do better if they try. I lost sight of that and quite frankly this has already been made into one of the flashbacks amid all the others in the slideshow of Wrong Things I've Done. I'm terribly sorry, GSK. You did the best you could. and the effort ALONE is more than respectable ^_^ [View Quote] ModelingAug 3, 2005, 1:15pm
I'm looking into learning how to model again. Editor of choice: Notepad.
However... I need a viewer. .... one that works. You see, right now, I have a slight problem: I downloaded about five RWX model viewers. However, none of them work -_- and by not working, I mean I 'open' an object (pp01.rwx in this case, quite simple). in RWXmod, it says it can't display a preview and that I should check my textures directory... I have my textures directory set up in a local copy of Alphaworld's Object Path (I complemented my AWE expansion pack with ALL textures and ALL models). So, my textures directory is correct. I doubleclick or click open, and I see the display window... ...with nothing in it. It doesn't display objects! This is very disheartening :( I would like to see what I'm working on before trying to uh.. 'upload' it. And by 'upload' I mean put it in the local path and temporarily replace an object that already exists >_> one I don't ever use or something. That's a lot of trouble to go to, y'know...? So, Are there ANY renderware model viewers out there that can, say, tell me what lines errors are on or whatever, or even one where I can see a graphical representation of what I'm trying to work on? Yeah, I'd ... really appreciate that o.o; Thanks AWGays.comAug 4, 2005, 8:35pm
I have had a few homosexual friends too. One of them claims that he is not
gay anymore but strangely enough I have trouble taking it seriously :\ sometimes I worry about him, as if he were lying to himself... Ideally though, I'd rather hope toward a world where people don't -need- exclusive communities. If there weren't so many pressures involved, in fact, sometimes I wonder if everybody would just be differing degrees of 'bi'. Such is one of the blessings of the internet, in fact; that one may embrace the concept of personality alone in its purest, unhindered by material qualities like gender, race, or structure. Here's to hoping that someday one may never need to confine themself to the standards or constraints. Though individuality is important, it should never, ever, ever segregate you from the rest of the world. Heh. Perhaps someday even the powderkeg issues of politics and religeon will become as lighthearted, innocent, and frivolous as choosing a favorite color. (I love purple :D ) [View Quote] AWGays.comAug 4, 2005, 8:40pm
O_O Holy COW! I didn't know!
wait... 'recovering'? >_> ... I'm SURE this has been covered in many many many ways but... am I the only person that is irked by how much that makes homosexuality sound like some sort of ... error to be fixed? I mean, uh, evolutionarily speaking it's not necessarily very helpful to the sustainment of the species if mates sought are incapable of creating progeny with their potentials... but it doesn't hurt anyone--eheh--? Er, that is, don't we have an overpopulation problem anyways? .... [View Quote] The AW 4.1 Pressure ThreadAug 7, 2005, 11:54pm
I hate to even BEGIN to make a comparisson between AW and Halflife 2, but at
this point, I feel completely on target to say: AWI, Take as Looooong as you need to ^_^ We know it's gonna be GREAT and well worth the wait. [View Quote] A WARNING TO ALL...Jan 14, 2006, 7:10am
Okay... I uh... hate to burst the bubble here but, this is striking me as a
REAL thorn in the side, like zbuffering in a post-2001 build. I just cannot understand why nobody has said it yet; perhaps it's becuase I'm the one that's supposed to say it... but... Legion, where the HELL do you think you're gonna get the authority to ban anybody but yourself for impersonating Activeworlds, Inc. staff? Really? God, bags of holding are less hollow than this. You should be ashamed of yourself, throwing around empty threats like that! You could've at least TRIED to make it more convincing--or at least less obvious--maybe changed to different subject matter... but if you claimed your cousin was a hacker that would "pwn" all the mean kids that are picking on you, it would not only be less fake, but also somehow MORE contrived and ridiculous! I'm going to point you in the direction of a nice little corner now, and you can go stand in it whilst hanging your head in shame. okay? Okay. [View Quote] |
