RWX Utility (Wishlist)
RWX Utility // WishlistdisembodiedAug 3, 2005, 1:21pm
It certainly would be nice if the team programming activeworlds could go a
few minutes out of their way sometime if they're bored and create a Renderware text editor with a realtime-updating object display panel, text color-coded highlights for different categories of text (commands, arguments, values, comments) and perhaps some sort of... template/guide for the 'anatomy' of a renderware file. It'd just be... nice. y'know? Toss that in with the AW installer or even as a seperate download. If they're investing so much in renderware the least they can do is provide a little boost in user-friendliness, right? just inAug 3, 2005, 8:50pm
Its not by any means a small task, but as it happens, I'm working on one.
It'll be a while before I get to a beta release stage. Features include syntax highlighting, tree folding, auto complete, line bookmarking, line numbering, multi line indenting and commenting, macro recording, workspace, search & replace by file(s), scripting out to zip ftp registry and model viewer. An internal viewer would be that last module to be added. Written in C++ http://www.broadway-world.com/pics/rwx-text-editor.jpg Regards, Justin [View Quote] andrasAug 4, 2005, 6:15am

About the viewer - that is not some small task to do! I spent days and days just to implement the transformation interpretation within the rwx file (which I'm glad to provide you in C source code). But doing the actual rendering requires implementing all "pseudo" renderware commands like prelight. I wish I would learn DirectX or OpenGL :) Maybe using Accutrans in a batch file you can do a rendering without going into the graphic details (but that wouldn't be an "internal viewer :). Looking forward to the result! -- Andras "It's MY computer" (tm Steve Gibson) disembodiedAug 4, 2005, 7:40am
No easy task....
The reason for my horrible misconception, which I apologize for profusely, is that we have a viewer: AW. The browser. It's just very cumbersome to use AS a viewer. However, AWI has access to the source code. Would that have made it easier to create a renderware viewer that could be somewhat a 'spinoff' from the Activeworlds Browser? I know it's not as easy as copypasting some code, but... Well i'm still just real surprised that AWI hasn't already done something about this themselves. It would bring so much user innovation... AW would have even more modeler people. GOOD modelers if they had software as versatile and flexible as that to learn from. right? I absolutely love that you've taken the matter into your own hands, though, Just In. [View Quote] r i c h a r dAug 4, 2005, 7:47am
Renderware doesn't actually render RWX files anymore not in a longtime,
There however used to be a renderware file viewer that came with the 1.X AW browser [View Quote] r i c h a r dAug 4, 2005, 7:54am

This came with an old browser but I can't get it to show any models properly, maybe you'll have better luck? [View Quote] just inAug 4, 2005, 11:16am
Interesting - its some 10 years old and uses an earlier version of the rwl
and rwd dlls. I also didn't get a simple model to show. There might be a few things to try with it but might be a lost cause. As I mentioned earlier, I entend to allow scripting, so the user can specify if they want to shell out to existing viewers RWXMod, Nivloc's Modeler, or Accutrans. When I get to Beta testing I'll probably let AWI know and see what comes of any feedback. Regards, Justin [View Quote] |
