Active Worlds 4.1

Jul 30, 2005, 3:28am
So umm... may I ask when we get some form of AW 4.1, whether it's a
public beta or the final version? Would August be a good guess?

If you can't tell me that, then can you provide screenshots of the new
browser version? They don't have to be full screenshots, just
screenshots showing off neat stuff. ;P

If you can provide neither, then... I guess I'll have to wait ;_;

is aw down?

Yup... the uniserver is still down. The network status page has likely
been that way for a long time, from previous downtime.

Question about AW 4.1's Zone objects

Sep 26, 2005, 2:03am
I'm sure everyone, or at least most people on the newsgroups know what
zone objects are, so I'll just ask the question.

How will abuse of zone objects be handled?

In the current version of AW, objects aren't visible until their center
point/axes comes into visibility range. So if 4.1 works the same way,
the defined zone for zone objects won't take effect until the center
point/axes comes into the user's visibility.

So what if you're using some low vis, you're flying along, then all of a
sudden you find yourself underwater or something like that from a zone
object? Will there be size limits?

If visibility doesn't work like that anymore, then I'd like to know how
it's handled now... if it's not private information.

Hope that made sense. =P

Question about AW 4.1's Zone objects

Sep 26, 2005, 9:53pm
Perhaps.

It's just been so long since there's been any *major* progress on the AW
browser. 4.1 is turning out to be the biggest upgrade yet, so a lot of
things can go wrong. But I hope they don't. That's why I ask questions.

I'm sure zones will be a wonderful building feature. I've already
thought of a million different ideas for it. I just don't want that same
wonderful feature to ruin other people's experience of AW.

Unfortunately though, OSMP isn't very mature yet. And it hasn't seen any
major activity since August 2004.

It's 7:20 PM, and AW seems to be... down?

Dec 3, 2005, 1:22am
AW is down and there were around 5 new beta ng posts today. Could it
be... dare I say it? Nooooo, I shouldn't jump to conclusions.

It'll probably be just unexpected downtime and that will be that...
right? O_O

"Sneak peak" at AW 4.1 (different universe)

Jan 10, 2006, 1:13am
(don't bother with this post if you still want to be surprised when 4.1
comes out)

It's called Stagecoach Island. A universe by Wells Fargo.
http://wellsupdate.wellsfargo.com/m/p/wls/ibk/sc.asp

Registration is free.

About box reads "build 935". The very first 4.1 beta was build 916, so I
can safely assume that this is indeed a 4.1 build.

The one world in this universe demonstrates some nifty new features. But
so that I don't spoil anything for anyone, you'll just have to
experiment for yourself.

It may be best just to wait for the 4.1 open beta in the main AW
universe. This particular build needs a bit of polish as you'll see once
you play around with it.

"Sneak peak" at AW 4.1 (different universe)

Jan 14, 2006, 6:32am
It seems that practically all of the people around here don't care about
4.1 being spoiled. Heh.

So... is there anyone around that DOESN'T know about 4.1's features yet?
I just happen to find it interesting how far/fast this spread, but I'm
not really surprised. We haven't had a major update to the browser in ages.

I've experimented a little with this 4.1 browser for the past few days
of course. One thing in particular that I noticed is that zones won't
actually take effect until they're within visibility. This is a problem
because it sorta makes the "Block Chat" feature useless. The user can
just set a low visibility, move far enough away from a zone so that only
the avatars are visible, then listen in on chat that's supposed to be
blocked by the zone... but it isn't, because it's out of visibility. Hmm.

Vehicle physics (and just physics in general) need a bit of tweaking. I
especially noticed that it's easy to get stuck inside things. But other
than that, vehicles (movers) are fairly usable.

Everything else seems pretty much okay, I think.

"Sneak peak" at AW 4.1 (different universe)

Jan 21, 2006, 9:23pm
[View Quote] Well, looking at the (relevant) response to this thread, many had not
discovered SI yet. I was aware that the SL folks already knew about it.
That was where I found out about it, in fact. The SL forums.

I almost forgot that this was my thread when reading some of it, heh.

Stagecoach Island Video Available

Feb 20, 2006, 6:37pm
Although it looks very similar, I think this is actually still the
Second Life video. I can tell by the dark name bubbles above people's
heads, and how the avatars look, among other things.

The video itself is okay-ish. A bit too jerky in places though.

Why you are not posting.

Feb 26, 2006, 3:19am
I'm not being negative. I'm just being realistic.

Whenever I'm in AW, I usually only see around 100-500 people inworld
according to the Worlds list. And I think only a small fraction of them
actually read the newsgroups, if they can at all.

Also... a population of millions? I don't think so. AW's total
population (that are actually active) is probably somewhere in the
thousands. I don't know for sure, but I find it unlikely that AW ever
had millions of users. That'd be a bit difficult to achieve for what AW is.

You should look at Second Life (or just visit secondlife.com and look at
the numbers). They have a population of nearly 150,000 and inworld users
are anywhere from 2,500 to almost 6,000. AW isn't even close.

But I like AW anyways, mostly because I'm free to build until I run out
of creativity/inspiration, rather than out of money.

AW4 vs. SL features

Mar 13, 2006, 5:43am
Technically speaking, I don't think it would be possible for AW and SL
to merge. The technologies they use are completely different from
eachother, formats aren't interoperable, etc.

I know what you mean, though. It'd be great if I had SL's building tools
and scripting language and AW's freedom to build without paying for
virtual land all rolled into one product or something.

AW4 vs. SL features

Mar 13, 2006, 9:48pm
Actually, you need to pay a monthly fee of actual real dollars in order
to own land in Second Life.

And money in SL can be very real. There's a little thing they have
called LindeX where basically you can exchange L$ (the virtual currency)
with real $. SL has its own economy and everything. :P

So you could theoretically make a living off SL (and some people
probably do).

pole commands help

Actually, the third number in the animate command is in milliseconds. So
for example, setting it to 1000 would trigger adone every second.
Setting it to 35000 would go every 35 seconds, 500 every half-second, etc.

Umm... the compatibility mode thing is in XP only.

It's there so you can run pre-XP programs on XP, not the other way

Particle Emitters and Movers

May 31, 2006, 10:54pm
Any object can be made into a Mover, and particle emitters don't have
models associated with them (unless it's emitting model particles).

The "V4 Objects" world right needs to be set properly in order for
people to use the new object types. I know that the 'awteen' world has
it set, but I don't know about everywhere else.

Some serious problems with 4.1 build 949

Jun 3, 2006, 4:04am
I've found that leaving build 949 running for awhile seems to cripple
XP. Everything works fine at first, but seriously degrades if used for a
few minutes or so. CPU usage gets locked at 99% even when it's
minimized. I have trouble opening applications. Lots of other weird
errors and things.

And then everything works 100% fine as soon as I close the browser.
Something's not right here.

I think it has something to do with build 949. Build 948 gave me *none*
of these problems. And no, I haven't changed my system configuration or
anything like that in-between the upgrade. Deleting the cache folder
doesn't seem to help at all, either.

Anyone else getting this? It's basically keeping me from using 4.1 at
the moment.

Some serious problems with 4.1 build 949

Thanks Cryonics For Fixing My 4.1 Problem!

Yes, 949c has fixed my problems as well. Thanks Cryonics. I didn't think
it would get fixed before Monday. :P
