Ejection identification - Put to TOP of list

Jun 9, 1998, 5:14am
Actually, it's already cross-posted to wishlist, and awcommunity. Yes
Icey, you're right... I used a very small selection of words compared to
what's out there. My point was that it would be possible, and in fact not
even difficult, to get around the filter... however, as Marvin pointed out,
people wouldn't know weather or not you were filtering the spelling they
were using unless you told them, so if you just ignored them it would
probably not give them much satisfaction. My other point was that
filtering words requires that they first be recognized, and adding the
ability of AW to recognize words or text strings would be usefull for more
than JUST to filter out swear words.

Ejection identification - Put to TOP of list

While it is important to consider the addition of a filter, we need to keep
in mind also the fact that aside from insulating children from "reality" the
issue of "bad words" is just a barely significant piece of the bigger
problems of verbal abuse to other users, and percieved or intended
agression.

In the first case, we have the biggest of the problems, which is verbal
abuse. To intentionally hurt someone through the things you say does no
good for anyone, and yet enough people do it to make many people just plain
give up on finding someone nice to talk with. By blocking so called "bad
language" from the browsers of experienced users who have learned to operate
a (as of yet non-existant) new feature to block words of their choice, we
push aside the issue of abuse, and "may" actually allow the problem for new
users to get much worse while those who would otherwise speak up fail to
even notice it. Also, verbal abuse does not always contain text strings
that could readily be associated with "abusive language" or "bad words" and
in fact may look perfectly normal and harmless to even the most
sophisticated filter routines. For example, if you were told that the
photograph of yourself that you had hanging in your home looked like
something from a frightning movie, and that with your looks and your brains,
you would be best off to get a lobotomy and a face transplant, I doubt you
would be very happy with the person who said such things, and in fact may
leave feeling hurt and depressed... but it's unlikely that any filter would
save you from it, and even if one did, you would look pretty silly thanking
the person for such a nice compliment.

The second problem I wanted to address is that of percieved or intended
agression. Some people type in all lower case, and may think a person is
yelling at them if a single word is typed in all caps, while other people
feel that if they don't type in all caps, they won't be heard. Likewise,
some people feel that without the use of profanity, they sound as if they
don't "REALLY" mean what they're saying, while other people may percieve the
use of a single foul word as a direct and very personal attack.

In my opinion, the biggest part of the solution can only come one way.
Those of us who have been around Active Worlds long enough to recognize the
problem have to do our best to keep from adding to it, and to newbies what
they need to know in order to communicate effectively and cooperate
peacefully, as well as to teach each other, and learn from everyone. We
can't expect someone visiting Active Worlds for the first time to understand
why it's better to communicate a certain way, or even what ways are better.
For that matter, we can't even expect all of the "experienced" users to have
figured it out. What we can do, is pass on what we know in a friendly
manor, and listen carefully to the people around us so that each of us can
learn to get along better in this new section of reality we're all helping
to define... and it wouldn't hurt to apply that same principle to the
older, more familliar parts of reality too. After all, we ARE the future.

Very well put, and as I believe I mentioned before (and should have if I
didn't) I do think that public mute idea is a very good one. Thankyou so
much for your insightful input. Lots of people (including myself) have
their little bits of encouragement (like I'm trying to do now) and other
things that add to the overall quality of what we read in here, but this
kind of input (which is common enough that I would be annoying if I thanked
the writer every time, but still unfortunately not the "majority" of posts)
can make a big difference... I hope.

Ejection identification - Put to TOP of list

Jun 17, 1998, 8:29am
That's why I was saying earlier... If a routine was added, to recognize
substrings so that they could be highlighted, or cause a sound effect, or in
some other way, brought to the user's attention, it would take very littly
"extra" programming to add filtering as an alternative to highlighting...
just set the "filtered" words to match the background color, or to maybe
even be replaced with a symbol like ~اØ~ or something like that, to
represent that it had been "sensored". That way, the small benifit would
be matched by the small amount of additional work to add it, and the main
features of the text string recognition would be useful to everyone, and
therefore would justify the majority of the programming necessary to
facilitate the filter.

To: MP/dynabyte, INC & The Continuum, INC...
Whoever posted this temper tantrum in sno doing anyone a favor. If you know
who is responsible, please tell them that whoever's side they think they are
on, they do not need to slander anyone in order to help someone else. If
they have a point, they would be better off to make it clearly, and not
attempt to hide behind an unclear identification, if if they were attempting
to frame someone else, that is also non-productive.

Universal Mute Vs Ejection

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

This might work nicely if it was done just right. It might be possible =
for example, to allow a person with eject rights to cause a person to be =
muted to all people present, but still allow them to be heard by people =
entering the area after the universal mute was issued, and since people =
would see the standard <muted> indicator, they could choose to un-mute =
the person to hear what was being said... if they actually wanted to =
hear it. A message to the person stating exactly what had been done, =
and why, might be helpful also.

This perhaps could be in addition to the warning, and eject notification =
(explanation) mentioned in an earlier thread.

deactivate privilages

May 26, 1998, 8:34am
When a person tries to enter a world that they are not allowed into while
another citizen's privilages are acquired, perhaps the AvtiveWorlds browser
should recognize this situation, and offer some choices... such as to
deactivate privilages and try again. This would address the problem of not
being able to enter your start world because you inadvertantly left your
privilages on, which has been mentioned in the beta newsgroup.

Well, is a room full of people, I think voice would have to be limited to
only a few at most in order to keep from maxing out the cable modem
connectsions and T1 lines that the privilaged few who could make good use of
it are connected to the Internet by. As for those of us running on a 14.4
Kbps connection, it would be a waste of memory to have it in the program.
Probably best "for now" to run your voice connection through a program
that's specifically designed for it (and probably not much good for anything
else) and keep this one on a back burner for AW until the hardware
technology catches up. <= My opinion.

Idea

Jun 6, 1998, 4:54am
I think I've mentioned this before also, however, I (or someone) should
point out that if this feature is added, and is used "too much" it will make
free access to Active Worlds much less inviting, and in the long run, that
will hurt all of us because people who don't come back won't be contributing
to our community in CyberSpace and we do need new people for MANY reasons.
Besides, tourists are pretty much harmless since it is possible to eject
them if they cause a problem, and anyone can delete their property if it is
thought to be offensive, or out of place. Although I do think a world owner
should be able to choose who may enter their world, we should be careful not
to start a new kind of prejudice that treats people in a given category as
outcasts simply because a few people in that category have done things to
warrant a bad reputation or worse yet, simply because we can.

Try pressing Alt-PrintScreen and then pasting into your bitmap editor
application. Then select the area you want from the image in that
application, and copy it to the clipboard. Hope this helps.

By using the Alt key with it, you get only the active window in the
foreground, rather than the whole screen, which generally makes it a bit
easier (and less memory intensive) to paste it into an application, and then
select and copy the area you want, as I said before.

Tourists and citizens trying to enter private worlds

Jun 9, 1998, 4:50am
I actually tested this (and upset a few people in doing so) before 2.0 was
released, and fould that if you didn't have objects cached in advance,
entering a 1.3 world in this manor would not allow you to cache any new
objects, but WOULD allow you to get in and walk around and in some cases
hear people and talk to people... However, since this means of entering a
world does not seam to work for 2.0 worlds, it upgrading the world should
solve the problem... feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll go back
to testing it.

Be "VERY" careful though. Make absolutely SURE that the place you are
moving to has enough room and will not cause encroachment, or you'll destroy
your property. Also, if you intend to move a great distance "blindly" you
will want to make sure that you know "exactly" which direction your stuff
will be moving in. The last object selected will deside the alignment of
your movement. You may want to create an object just for that purpose, line
it up neatly in the direction you want it to face, and select it last to
control the four directions that the selection group will move in....
possibly even test move a copy of the object first, just to be extra sure.

The last time I used RoboBuilder, yes, it said (if I recall correctly) to
face your afatar north, and something about making sure the object was
aligned right also.. although I don't recall the wording. Anyway, what it
comes down to is if your object is not aligned in a north-south or east-west
position, it will not move North, South, East, and West, but rather will
move along some other two prependicular lines based on the rotation of your
object. What I was saying is that when selecting a single object, you
generally know which way it is aligned (unless it has been shift-rotated)
whereas when you select a cell full of objects at a time, there is no way to
know exactly which way they will move until you start moving them. The
solution to this is to keep an object nearby that is aligned the way you
want the group to ACT as if it is aligned, and add that object to the
selection group LAST so that it's alignment will be used as the alignment
for the group.

RoboBuilder is a program (by BinaryBud) designed to speed up a few simple
repetative tasks in Active Worlds. I don't know it's present list of
features, but at the time I tried it, you could use it to make a row of
evenly spaced copies of an object, move an object to a distant location
(although this still takes very long, but it counts the clicks for you so
you don't have to) or cover a rectangular area with evenly spaced copies of
an object. I don't recall good enough to quote BB exactly on this, but
basically, he told me that it's not a program for beginners, but rather a
tool for advanced builders. (Feel free to jump in and correct me or
elaborate if you're around.) Also, don't expect to be able to do anything
"new" with it if you get it. It's just a time saver for people who already
understand building and object placement.

level or something like that... just a thought.

Online User List

Perhaps even better than that would be the equivinant of a Welcome mat and
an Open sign, or something like ICQ's "available for chat" mode, so it would
list only people who have set the lowest level of privacy (at that time) as
far as weather or not it's okay to show what world they are in. The "normal"
level would show what world you are in, where you are listed on someone's
contact list, but not show in the list of "available" users in a world, and
of course, there would still be the obtion to not allow AW to tell anyone
for you... and, just a thought, maybe one more level just below that one,
which would allow only people on your contact list to see what world you are
in.

TechnoZeus
P.S. I think that "Your full Name" may look a bit confusing to some people
when they see it in a quote. You may want to consider changing your
settings.

Roland! THE Answer to Vulgarity! :)

Jun 14, 1998, 2:37pm
This has been mentioned in a couple of other threads.. and maybe more that I
don't know about. Good idea, but as I just mentioned in a message entitled
"Control of Vulgarity -- and More" which is in a subthread entitled "Control
of Vulgarity is SO EASY!!!!!" of the thread entitled "Ejection
identification - Put to TOP of list" which was cross posted to WishList and
AWCommunity, the problem of vulgarity is merely a symptom of two larger
problems which we must not let become worse by allowing ourselves to be
blindfolded.

If you're interested in this subject, and haven't seen the long drawn out
discussion about it going on in the AWCommunity newsgroup, the thread
(started by grover) is entitled "AW Community Issues" and is dated May 23,
1998.

Roland! THE Answer to Vulgarity! :)

Jun 23, 1998, 3:35am
This is true. Btw, another benefit of the filter, if it can handle a file
that large, might be to translate a few words that a person might have
trouble with into whatever language they would rather see them in. This
would, I think, work particularly well in the case of turning English into
another language because of the "cut and paste" nature of English sentance
formation, although the results would be bad grammar and incorrect or
non-existant conjugations. Still, it could be usefull to some extent in
showing what someone was trying to say rather than hiding it. Depends on
how it's used.

Roland: Automatic Animation is Unrealistic!

Jun 14, 1998, 2:57pm
First, I would just like to address your first line, where you mention the
use of Roland's name in the subject to get his attention. I doubt you meant
anything bad by it, but I think it would be pretty understandable if Roland
got his feelings hurt by the implication that he's not paying enough
attention to this newsgroup to notice messages that don't have his name in
the subject field. If I was in his position, I would find it mildly
offensive at the very least. By the way Roland, I hope you don't take
offense to my stating my opinion about how you "might" feel about something,
but I figured if it made you feel bad you probably would be reluctant to say
so since you're such a nice guy. All that said, I'll get to my point now...

I'm not sure weather or not I understand you correctly. If you are saying
that the actions on the buttons are happening on their own, I haven't
noticed it. If you are saying that there is too much variety to the things
avatars do while they are "waiting", that would depend on which avatars you
use, and more to the point, which sequences are assigned to them. These
things are different for each world, to I guess I have to assume that either
you're asking people who make sequences for avatars to change their idea of
what people want to see, or that you are suggesting some change to the
avatar sets made available by COF to world owners. If this last one is the
case, I would like to suggest that if you (or anyone reading this) know of
or can make, an alternative set of sequences for those sets of avatars, the
altenrative sequence could be sent (with the creator's permission of course)
to COF so that they could consider making it available as an alternative to
the default sequence sets for those avatars.

I think Dthknight is right, that they don't do the stuff on the buttons
unless you push the button... Looking at your watch is a common action for
some avatars that are standing around. I figure the person that made the
sequence probably intended it to look like the avatar was getting bored
because nobody was moving it... but I don't actually know.

Btw, Dthknight.... About that quote you keep on the end of each post you
make... Would that imply that anyone who has ever tried anything new, has
made a mistake? (Or in short.. that it's a mistake to try anything new?)

Sorry Marvin. I kind of side tracked things a bit. Just couldn't resist
commenting on that Einstein quote any longer. It was just TOO tempting.
:·) By the way BB, it's nice to learn from your mistakes, but I would
rather get what I can right the first time... Albert Einstein was pretty
insightful, but I think he missed the mark just a bit on that one. I think
maybe he should have said "Anyone who has never made a mistake is either
very lucky, very lazy, or VERY young." Hehehe.

Roland: Automatic Animation is Unrealistic!

Jun 18, 1998, 3:52am
Okay. I have a few of things that may actually be helpful Marvin, but first
I would like to say that I think you are reading people wrong, or maybe I'm
reading you wrong, because you are comming off as rude and hostile to people
who are only trying to be helpful in anylizing the situation. I don't mean
that to insult you. Just to let you know that we mean well... in case that
wasn't obvious. After all, this is about perception and each of us has a
unique view of the world. Okay, here goes...

First, I would like to say that it would be nice to have the option "Show
Avatar Animations" split into two separate options named "Show Explicit
Avatar Animations" and "Show Implied Avatar Animations" or something on that
line, so we could turn the button actions on and off separate from the
involuntary actions. This would allow a person to have a little more
control over avatar animations on their computer.

Second, I would like to mention that although I tried it (as a test) and
failed, I still think it "should" be possible to eliminate the involuntary
movements by editing the avatars.dat file for that world. What I tried was
to delete the section from beginimp to endimp for each avatar, but it's
possible I may have missed an opening beginimp, or made some similar
mistake, or that perhaps I should have only deleted what was "between" them.
If you want to try it, do so at your own risk... but it might work.

Last, I would like to mention a possibility that I didn't test, and that
would be to replace the SEQ files that are used for the implied actions,
with copies of a SEQ file that does little or nothing. Again, if you want
to try it, do so at your own risk. Personally I would "rather" see the
option split so you can disable either implied actions, or explicit actions,
or both... but for anyone who can't wait that long, there's a few things you
can try.

I use multiple contacts files to solve the problem. Would be nice though,
to see AW support them internally, so I wouldn't have to close AW and run a
batch file each time I want to switch to a different contact list.
