> I doubt that Robbie is adult, that will protect him in UK and US

Last time I talked to him he was older then I am, and I'm 17. That would
either make him 17 which is an adult in some countries, or 18 which makes
him adult almost anywhere :). He might get sent to juvinile detention, IF
he's prosecuted.

Or was it younger? Oh it's been way too long for me to remember.

it. I would recommend Redhat if you're just learning linux. That's my
opinion.

> I would recommend using for a web server something you are familiar with,
from your post I take it that you have no or very little experience with
*nix or you'd have your own personal favorites. Security and performance, if
those are your concern, do not come bundled with the OS no matter what some
"experts" say. To me running a public web server on an OS you don't have
experience is like asking for trouble. If I were you I'd go for Win2K/XP
with IIS5, Apache or Xitami, again no matter what some "experts" say :)

You don't want to recommend XP for a webserver, nor IIS. It's just a really
bad thing to do, let alone having to pay $300+ for it. I may not be an
expert but it just doesn't seem wise. Win2k is the best choice, but Apache
is the best choice for a webserver IMHO, it's been around a lot longer, and
is generally more secure. And before Agent1 jumps at me fore bashing
Microsoft again let me explain to you why I feel XP is not a sound choice.
First the raw TCP ports, it leaves your computer completely vunerable, and
gives other people root access, then the price, obviously :). IIS is the
other big problem, there's so many holes and security breaches it hardly
seems logical to use it.

> At the same time it would be a good idea to get a cheap machine,
preferably more for a small LAN, add 2-3 HDs and mess around (offline) with
different *nix (Mandrake being an excellent start) till you feel confident
about them. Then you can use that hands-on experience to run your web server
on the stable, secure and (most of the times) free realm of *nix. No matter
what your choice is, win or *nix, be prepared for a *lot* of daily, never
ending studying, again if security and performance are your concern. Of
course if it's all about cost discard all of the above (except the studying
part). Good luck.

Yeah, learn the stuff before you jump into it. You can mess up a *nix
machine bad if you don't know what you're doing.

Wouldn't be "easy" then. By easy I think he means PRINT "Hello World!"
Which is the extent of a script kiddie's abilities in most cases.

Obliterating Non Existant Folders in XP

Jun 14, 2002, 6:05pm
Not using XP would be the best way to go. It might be a glitch in the NTFS
file system if that's what you happen to be using. Even if it was a phantom
folder, with no size, you'd be able to delete it since it recognizes it. If
it's a "RAM" object.. restart.

So get linux, linux can run all your windows programs with WINE. And yes,
most of my windows games and programs do work in linux.

I'm also pretty sure FreeBSD has a wine package available.

Nah, not after you get used to it. Just remember, never use root unless you
absolutely have to. Or you're a genius and know exactly what you're doing..
even that's risky ;)

I completely agree on that. Most new linux distros now contain the drivers
for most cards. That is if you buy it (not sure about downloading it).

The other reason Microsoft is removing support fod older hardware is because
they want people to buy new hardware, usually from their OEM manufactureres,
so they get even more money.

linux?

Jun 15, 2002, 4:12pm
Well a couple of my friends wanted to play around with linux, so I hooked up
an old linux box to the net (I don't care if it's hacked or whatnot). Since
I've been giving them some names, I was wondering if anyone else wanted an
account on my linux box.

If you do, e-mail me. blahman at 7k2.4mg.com . Make sure to include your AW
name (or e-mail), an account name, and a password and I'll make it for you
asap ;).

Adding onto that above, I will now offer the ability to host webpages
(although not OP's due to the inability to use the FTP to upload). You can
create webpages locally though.

a new AW GZ?

Jun 16, 2002, 11:03pm
Well, I was walking around AW GZ just now and looking at all the overlaps
and missing pieces, etc. I was thinking to myself, why not touch up the GZ?
We don't need to give it an entirely new look, just make it a little more
appealing. Take away the overlaps and fill in some of the missing pieces,
maybe make some new objects to fit in for those pieces that they probably
needed.

I see nothing wrong with this at all, it's not like we're removing something
from history. (Think of it as like, cleaning up some Graffiti on say.. the
Statue of Liberty.)

Jun 17, 2002, 2:24am
LoL, the original AW was blank.. so it stands that it wasn't originally
there ;D.. besides I think there was one before this wasn't there? Most of
it's from 1997.. so it stands that there was something before then..
