If the crashes are totally random and can't be recreated by going to a
specific place in a specific world, it's probably not a bad AW file. Since
you both have Ensoniq cards, I would disable your sound card in Hardware
Manager and see it the crashes continue.
Good Luck.

Disappearing HD space... Check the properties of Windows\Temporary Internet
Files folder and also Windows\temp folder. I don't know if you're using
FAT32 or not but those 1 KB files that web browsers get can take up 32KB per
file on a FAT16 disk. There are hidden files in the Temp Internet Files
folder that you can only delete through DOS and the attrib command or by
using Spider.exe among many programs. See if there might be another folder
where you might be accumulating files. Some software just never met a file
it didn't like to store on your HD. A wonderful program to graphically
display the size of each folder and the storage efficiency (amount of wasted
space) is called Diskdata.exe
Your scandisk results are troubling. Do a disk cleaning and delete every
file you no longer need. Do searches for *.tmp files for deletion too. It's
possible your HD surface may be physically failing. Use Norton Disk Doctor
to mark any bad sectors it finds... I'm not sure Scandisk will mark bad
sectors. Run NDD once a week. If the bad sectors continue to grow, get a new
HD quickly. Check the HD controller driver. Is there a newer version?
As for the CDROM, you say it plays music CDs consistently without errors.
That would imply the head is properly aligned and cables are properly
seated. Those are the two most likely things that the repair guy/girl could
have damaged while in their care. Did you use a CDROM lens cleaner to try
and clean the laser reader? How old is the CDROM? The FAT on newer CDs may
be located where your drive isn't looking. I have seen 2 year old players
that do not read data CD's well. See if there's a firmware upgrade you can
get for your CDROM and, if it's and IDE device, check to see if there's a
controller update. With CDROMs so inexpensive these days, you might just get
a new one. Your CD problems could just be coincidental to the trip to the
repair shop and reflect firmware age, not repair person negligence.
Good Luck.

If the CDROM drivers are in the config.sys file and mscdex in the
autoexec.bat file, press F8 on startup of Windows and go into DOS mode. Or
just make a DOS boot disk with the CDROM drivers and mscdex. You should have
CDROM support in DOS. Try doing directory reads of various data CD's. If
they work in DOS, it might be a Window's problem. If the same problem
persists, I think it's a most likely a mechanical head-alignment problem
with the CDROM that isn't worth fixing given the current prices of CDROM's
(sad to throw things away).

If you plan to have those computers connected to the Internet, I suggest you
use NetBEUI for the local print/file sharing since binding print/file
sharing to TC/IP will expose those shares to the Internet.

Possibly the discrepancy might be due to the difference between the actual
file size downloaded and the amount of disk space occupied by that file.
Some file systems, notably FAT16, are very inefficient and waste large
amounts of disk space.

If the mother ship is not there to answer the call from a uniserver that is
hosted elsewhere, will the uniserver still run? If AW goes belly-up and for
some reason the power to their servers/hosting computers is turned off, will
all uniservers then die because of the inability to connect to the mother AW
ship?

AWLDW is the ticker symbol for their Series B redeemable common stock
purchase warrant, exercisable for one share of common stock (common stock
symbol AWLD). The warrants were part of the May 2000 offering of 1,260,000
units. Each unit consisted of one share of common stock and a Series B
redeemable common stock purchase warrant to purchase one share of common
stock at $4.675 per share. The warrants currently trade for a few cents due
to the excessive premium of the exercise price over the current common stock
price.

I suggest anyone interested in AW's future read the "agreement"
andplanofexchange.txt) carefully especially sections 1.05 (effective upon
signing), 2.01 and Schedule 2.01(b) ("excluded assets"). Apparently, they do
get all the software and AW Inc. business assets and liabilities without any
cash ("excluded assets") to run the company other than what current
operating revenues will provide. A recasting of the 3/31/02 quarterly income
statement
(http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1089531/000112528202001692/b318476_1
0qsb.txt) will give you an idea what AW Inc. can afford to do without cash
in the bank and only about $138,000 in revenues per quarter.

AWCorp is a publicly registered corporation whose wholy owned subsidiary was
AWInc. AWInc owns all the rights to the AW software. After a proxy skirmish
and as part of the 7/10/02 "agreement", AWCorp sold 100% of AWInc to Rick
and JP for their stock in AWCorp. Therefore AWCorp has the cash and rights
to the Juno lawsuit for assets and remains a publically traded company
(shell) on the "pink sheets", I believe. AWInc (owned now by Rick and JP) is
the visible operator of Active Worlds and hence the face-lift on the web
pages.

The end of a chapter means the beginning of a new one with new characters
and adventures. However the chapter that's about to close has been one of
unimaginable experiences in a new environment that very few would have ever
thought possible a few years ago. Knowing you, Serendipitous, has been one
pleasure I will always remember about this latest chapter. From AW to
Free4All to Flirt, we laughed, built and played like children. The
responsibilities of the real world were tossed aside and replaced by crazy
ideas, new friendships and island dreams. Your independent style reminded me
of a quote from Anais Nin, "How wrong it is for a woman to expect the man to
build the world she wants, rather than to create it herself." You've
created many wonderful worlds and been kind and courteous to all who
visited. Your aura will be missed greatly by all in AW. Have fun in all your
new adventures, Seren.

If you know the port(s) the AW server uses and whether they're either TCP or
UDP, you might try adding those port(s) to the "Ports Forwarding" list in
your router's setup. You'll also need to assign the AW server computer a
fixed IP outside the DHCP server range (set in the router). Then go to the
"port forwarding" setup in your router and add the AW server ports used and
assign those to the new, permanent IP of your AW server computer. Good luck.
