I need CDROM help plz // General Discussiondata21Dec 7, 2001, 5:58pm
anyone know what would cause a CDROM drive to only read 1 CD and refuse to
read all others? none of them are CDR's or CDRW's. They are all store bought CD's mostly game CD's and software CD's I reinstalled its drivers and that did not help. Im still confused on why it will read this 1 CD and no others. All my CD's are in good condition and all worked before. sykoDec 7, 2001, 6:38pm
whenever i've got hardware problems, i just reinstall windows (without
deleting or formatting) and it usually corrects them [View Quote] kahDec 7, 2001, 8:09pm
reinstall drivers, mess with IDE stuff, if you're real stuck, get a new
drive... I just had a problem with a CD-ROM drive that got messed up after reading a scratchy CD, started off by corrupting the secondary IDE controller's drivers, then it made the slave disk not detect, just bought an old drive from a friend and there was no more problems lol... Well this should not happen... some CDs is ok, but if that's nearly all, your CD-ROM drive more than likely has a problem... maybe
you should ask for a repair / refund if the warranty is valid... Also there are CD-ROM drive lens cleaner CDs, which have a small brush on them, you can try that, it has worked in the past for me (but don't expect that to solve all your problem... and also it was a long time ago with my 2x Sony CD-ROM drive :) ) Fox Mc Cloud "data21" <dbmiller at kiski.net> a écrit dans le message news: 3c111f7d at server1.Activeworlds.com... > anyone know what would cause a CDROM drive to only read 1 CD and refuse to > read all others? none of them are CDR's or CDRW's. > They are all store bought CD's mostly game CD's and software CD's > I reinstalled its drivers and that did not help. > Im still confused on why it will read this 1 CD and no others. > All my CD's are in good condition and all worked before. sykoDec 8, 2001, 12:35am
just... reinstall windows, you dont have to open up the comp, and it usually

If the CDROM drivers are in the config.sys file and mscdex in the
autoexec.bat file, press F8 on startup of Windows and go into DOS mode. Or just make a DOS boot disk with the CDROM drivers and mscdex. You should have CDROM support in DOS. Try doing directory reads of various data CD's. If they work in DOS, it might be a Window's problem. If the same problem persists, I think it's a most likely a mechanical head-alignment problem with the CDROM that isn't worth fixing given the current prices of CDROM's (sad to throw things away). I tried something new and was confused about the results.
I changed the drive letter of my CD-ROM to see if maybe it was not recognizing that latter, and when I changed it and rebooted the new drive letter was in My Computer just like it should be, But the strange thing is the old letter D:/ was still there so in a sence the CD-ROM now had 2 drive letters to itself D:/ and E:/ witch should not be. so I changed it back to D:/ and the drive letter E:/ vanished. Why did it not remove D:/ when I changed it to E:/ ? E:/ left when I changed it back to D:/ note: changing drive letters did not help eather. Could this be causing all the problems im having with the CD-ROM drive? [View Quote] kahDec 12, 2001, 4:09pm
Windows drive letters are just there to be pretty... check if it's got
correct master/slave config (you do that with the config jumpers on the back of the drive, should be next to the power connector) for the IDE cable it's on KAH [View Quote] data21Dec 14, 2001, 11:24am

"my CD-ROM" is your drive, right? a bunch of CDs don't just stop working
like that, take some of them to a friend's and see if they work there... if they do, go to the shops and get a new drive is my advice... KAH [View Quote] |
