It's coming along great Steve! I know this part can be tedious so I'm glad to see you keeping at it. I can't wait to see it in all of its textured glory. Thanks for sharing your techniques as well. :) |

Hi all,
Another quick update. Quite an interesting UV mapping job on that part but that's what makes it fun.:)

Hi Steve - cheers for the insight into your texture techniques - similar to what I do myself depending on the project although your attention to detail is outstanding.
I don't know about you but I find the texturing part of the process to be as much fun as the modelling. Having said that I've been busy with painting commissions and haven't had a chance to get tSing - I hear you when you talk about 'real life'!
May be tS 8 will be able to render an edible cheese sandwich and a cup off coffee so we can can eat at modell at the same time!! ;) |

Holy >cEnSoReD<!! That thing is looking more than real. And yeah, the insight to your technique is a real treat. I'll have to try and match your work, although I think at this point it's impossible. Too >fine< work you're doing there! ... Keep at it!! |

amazing work MadMouse!
Details and texturing are lovely combined.
Will be definitively a great object. Can't wait to see it in a final render :) |

Hi all,
Just finished the shin section. (Phew!!! quite a UV job) I'm getting there slowly but surely but there's still more to be done than has been if that makes sense.
Once more into the breech dear friends once more into the breech........Thigh section next.....
Any comments and crits are welcome. (BTW do you think the four rear rams are a little plain????)

Looks fantastic to me.. I would have thought there would be grease on the 4 rams - especial in the indent area and on the ends.. just a little 'tweak' suggestion for you.. |

I've decided I hate MadMouse. What jealousy? No... never...
Very good work. I remember watching this one grow up in the old forums, and I remember you saying that you weren't going to animate it. This would be a crying shame! You could just have a still render, and use that to win in the gallery, then render a short 100 frame animation and win that too! I've seen your website, and can easily tell you have that artistic spark. GO FOR IT!

Its a valid point, and your not the first to suggest it. I'm in agreement with you but... as I have said already in this thread at the scale of the final render the grease you talk about would probably be wasted detail and with 40 separate rams on the model its more work that I don't really need. But thanks anyway.

Thanks Andy, your very kind. I must admit that every now and then the thought of animating my mech does cross my mind. Maybe If I'm not to sick of the thing when its finished I'll give it a try.

Yes, I think we can all safely assume that this mech could come from a time where synthetic lubricants repel particulate matter for longer parts life and less maintenance. In such case...it's perfect. |

True!.. I wonder if it will animate in realtime in the player window considering the amount of detail! |

OK I'll admit its not the most impressive part on the mech so far but it still took quite a bit of mapping:)

I was involved with the beta testing of TS7 for a brief period ( I just haven't got the time to do the job justice) and while I had access to TS7 I tried my mech in the player and found that the level of detail was just to much for TS to effectively use in real-time.:(
Comments and crits are as welcome as always.
More soon

What's with the hard-to-pronounce palindromic name?
I asked this same question back when Steve was modelling this baby. I think you will be as impressed as I was with the cunning answer!
I'm not going to steal Steve's thunder I'll let him answer it himself - but the answer is very cunning (and is almost certain to give you an 'Aaaahhh! I see, how clever' response.
WOW - say it backwards - Wow! Say it upside down - MOM? |

Ah-ha... I just knew someone would ask that:)
Well, as Stephen hinted there was a good reason for choosing a palindrome for the makers name.
A)... It sounds vaguely Japanese and as we know they make all the best toys.
B)... Because WIAHAIW is a palindrome, when I mirrored the finished leg over for the other side I didn't need to remodel the lettering!! Not sure how cunning that is, maybe it just me being lazy.:)
I cant tell you how many different permutations I went through before I settled on WIAHAIW!!!:)

Far be it from me to criticise someone else's <cough> efficiency :p, but couldn't you have just modeled the name on 1 bit, then copy the bit it was modelled onto, boolean chop off the surrounding parts [so you just have a rectangular border around the name], then put that in place on the next place you want the name? That way you could have had any name. <shrug> Just a thought. :) |
