Eh, didn't you say you tested the Mech in the ts7 Player?
No your not going mad Lars. I was involved with Beta testing TS7 for a short while and that is when I tried my mech in the player.
Steve
P.S. I was thinking about a night render for my Mech Marcel. Could look cool:) |

I think the last pic you showed wasn't as rusty as the rest; however it would be consistant because of the location, the feet would be dirtier than the 'waist' of the mech. At least that's my assertion. I agree about not entering the month that MM enters this beast!!:) |

In your last pic, the valve controls look a little too clean in relation to the rest of the mech. |

I did it like Andrew in this Tutorial (http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/hdri_tut.html) ans this works quit good. A wastebasket.. mmh don't know if this works but it's a try.
btw. I like your Beast :)
Thanks, beasts are my favourite subject to sculpt. :)
Ah, the tutorial mentions a difference image for the composite... that's something I havn't thought about. Gotta try it ! :D
*sitting and staring at screen....waiting for MadMouse to log in, hoping that he worked on the mech instead of sleep last night* ;) |

Chuckle! Roman is gonna have slim pickings for the gallery the month that MadMouses Mech gets entered! Steve, you're frightening off all the competition! Maybe Roman should just give you an upgrade now to save time!! I doubt he'd get any complaints from the rest of the community given that most of us are just awestruck by what you are doing here!

Well here's the next piece of the puzzle. I haven't got much done recently
as I've been distracted by getting used to using Ultimate Unwrap 3D but its coming along slowly.
I was planning to do the fork section in red, similar to the end on the fork arm seen here.
What do you think?? or should I go back to yellow?? Comments and crits welcome.

Don't forks usually tend to be bare metal? Either deliberately, or the paint's just been worn away? |

No.. No.. You misunderstood me or maybe I didn't make myself clear.
I didn't mean the forks themselves. Obviously the forks need to be bare metal with just a
hint of paint in low wear areas. I was referring to the body of the fork carriage section as seen in this pic.
My logic was when this thing is working the arm would be swinging around and would be quite dangerous
hence the red paint job. |

Ah, right, I see what you mean. I can't honestly say which colour I think would look better. The red might work, but then again it might clash too much with the yellow. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/dunno.gif |

I understand your reasoning behing the red paint, but I've noticed things done in CG that are red start to look kind of like a toy. |

Excellent idea! That means we get to see more pictures :D
Really like your latest renders :)
... and yes, I tried to magnify your testrender seen in the "Show us yer room"-thread...but it was a little to small.:(
Maybe Splinter can trick you into showing more by starting a "Show us yer Monitor" ;) |

Well thats the fork section finished. I decided on the red (so no extra pics Lars... sorry:) )
It sure made a nice change to work on another colour than rusty yellow.
Comments and crits please people.
Onto the cab next. There is a light at the end of the tunnel at last;)

Nice work again, M.M. You should think about contacting Corel when you're done with this; they don't have too much emphasis on using PSP for this type of work, they may want to feature the Mech.:)

Now Steve you of all people should know that you can't rush good art! But thanks for the kind words. Actually the CD has come to a temporary halt as has just about everything else thanks to various real world issues but I should be back to it soon. I do try to get over here to my favourite forum at least a couple of times a week though.
Now about the forks - they look great my friend but I do have a couple of observations. First it's my understanding that the reason that so much heavy machinery is yellow - like your mech - is that yellow is the most easily seen and readily (reddily?) identifies colour under the widest range of light types. Red - like on many fire engines for example - often looks black under those orange (sodium vapour?) streetlights but yelloe still looks yellow.
So your fork mount, being red, will contrast nicely with the yellow but might not necessarily be the 'safest' colour.
The other point is that the red you've chosen, whilst looking great also strikes me as a little bloody looking - I'm imagining the red fork mount on the otherwise yellow mech and it may look like you've been using the mech to dissect a whale or something! Assuming whales have red blood that it!
Now your mech's gonna look brilliant no matter which way you go but I just thought I'd offer you some of my thoughts on the matter... seeing as you did ask!;) |

Hi Bud,
MMMMmmmm very interesting Mr. Bond.
You've made a good point there, and its one that I hadn't considered. My logic behind the red fork carriage was that when the Mech is in use the forks would be swinging in a circle at a dangerous, skull smashing, head height and pedestrians passing the working mech would need to be aware of the arm and red is always used as a danger warning. But your point about the red not showing up as well in certain light conditions is very valid. However, as you know I drive fork lifts of all shapes and sizes for a living and I have seen or driven all manner of colour forklifts, yellows and reds, greys, blues and even beige!!! so I think I could get away with any colour. Its more a case of yellow is the recognised standard and stereotypical colour. So maybe this time its a case of style over functionality because I must admit I do like the look of the red paint job.
The other point is that the red you've chosen, whilst looking great also strikes me as a little bloody looking - I'm imagining the red fork mount on the otherwise yellow mech and it may look like you've been using the mech to dissect a whale or something! Assuming whales have red blood that it!
Maybe the forks used to be yellow and a careless operator hit so many people in the head that their blood stained the forks a lovely shade of red.
Mmmm now how would I go about depicting that?? Anyone know of a good brain matter tutorial???:D
Thanks for the comment Stephen, I can always count on you for good constructive crits.
ATB mate and hurry up with real life so you can get back to this space we call true:)

I think the fork is the least dangerous thing on this huge mech ! :D
As long as it has flashing lights and perhaps some warning sound...
for thoose who (for some strange reason) doesn't hear the enormous vibrations and thumping sound when the huge feets are crushing the ground and everyone in the way ;)
I have to admit that I get slightly nervous (:o) when I'm visiting customer factories and they have fast moving forklifts.... but a huge mech should move a bit slower and be slightly safer? ( altough it didn't in the Aliens-movie  )
Oh, btw, when you're finished with the mech, make sure to sell the idea to the forklift companies.... I would really like to see this beast in real life ! :jumpy: |

Just a tought before you finish....are you going to have a detachable arm so that other tools can be connected for other operations? Back in the 80's we designed something similiar that is being used in Mack Truck founderies and also was in an early movie "Raising the Titanic" (GE prototype). It could pickup a truck but had computer feedback (electrical hydraulic) so that you could feel the spongey filter if it's "hand" squeezed a cigarette. |

You may be right about being the least dangerous thing on this Mech. If I succeed in matting in a photo of me at the controls that will by far be the most dangerous thing :)
Just a thought before you finish....are you going to have a detachable arm so that other tools can be connected for other operations
Indeed... If my enthusiasm doesn't fail me I intend a few variations. When I was originally modelling the Mech I was inundated with ideas for different version ranging from forestry, welding, fire fighting through to underwater salvage. I rather like the fire fighting idea myself.:D
