Hi all,

Well I'm finally back where I belong, behind a hot PC and my beloved TS. Life's been getting in the way for far to long

(I wont bore you with the details) so let the pixel pushing begin!!!:)

Those of you with long memorys might remember this model from the old forum:-

For those of you that dont, and are interested in its origins heres a link:-Warehouse Mech Link (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1583/18561.html?1130420033)

It took me 6 months to model with much help and suggestions by the guys from the old forum (thanks again guys, you know who you are).

And so the mapping and texturing begins.

In my opionion, to many mech are made to look 'factory fresh', so the plan is to have a worn and well used look to my mech. I work in a warehouse driving conventional forklifts for a living and if all goes to plan the finished image will be matted into a photo of my work place with myself at the controls!!!

Best foot forward.......

That's it so far what do you think????

All comments and crits, good or bad are always welcome. More soon.

You might want to edit your post & put the full url to the image files inbetween the tags. :)

like this:
[img]http://www.imageaddy.com/image.jpg
Oh, & don't worry about mine showing up like that, that's because a) that's a bogus made up addy, & b) I used a special forum code to disable the image tag in my post so you could see the code.

<edit>
Look forward to seeing the new version, I actually had the old 1 as my desktop wallpaper for a while.

Oh, right - if you've attached it [which I dont normally do, cos I have some webspace], I think you use the [attach] tag instead of the [img] tag. When you make a post, or edit using advanced editing mode of an existing post, scroll down & you'll see a button with "manage attachments" on it. That might provide some insight.

Ok, I've just fiddled about with it & sussed it out. It's a lot more farting around than doing it the way I normally do it, which is why I won't be switching to using attachments!

Click the manage attachments button, new window opens, in there upload your attachment. When it's uploaded close the manage attachments window.

Just above the editor there's a bunch of icons, click the paperclip, select your attachment & it adds the code into the post.

Well, you don't have to worry too much about tags. There are a lot of buttons that do the work for you. Just hover over the icons to see what they do. If you scroll down a bit you see a button called "manage attachments".

edit:

Damn, second :D

Very cool mad mouse. If the rest of the textures have the quality like the sample above, it will look killer.

You mean aside from the fact that the old forum software was over 5 years out of date? I'm glad Caligari finally decided to use something more recent!

As for the mech, it wasn't the 1 I was thinking of, don't know who made that other 1 then. It was that purple 1 in the gallery.

Yours is cool though, very detailed.

Bit of an update......

Foot and toes are finished onto the ankle next......

Comment and crits are most welcome.

p.s. Do you think the rust texture could act like camouflage when used on the whole mech, and hide some of the detailing?

Nice texture work, I think this will really be outstanding when you are finished.

The only thing that sticks out to me are the bolts, the ones with the castle nuts attached could probably use some rust or dirt on them.

Great work.

Very nice MadMouse!

The cylinder rods could use some grease/oily look, plus area where cyclinder wipper doesn't hit should be dirtier or dirty. A oil leak or two :) on hoses. Not sure how you can make the hydraulic lines look worn or maybe frayed here and there. Alot of times the cylinder rods will have straight line streaks or scratches, even though they are not leaking yet though the seals. Not sure how fine of detail you are trying to achieve but your texturing looks to be on the master level already.

OK! I'm going to figure that the warehouse manager is finicky about maintenance. Things like hydraulic hoses and fittings, joint pins and associated fasteners (castle nuts and cotter pins), and hydraulic rams are replaced at regular intervals; which explains their newness. Painting rust-stained steel on the other hand is more cosmetic for equipment used indoors and might get ignored for several years.

Great textures so far!

Looking great, what's your texture technique?

Looking good Steve.

Re your PS question - It is certainly likely that too much contrasty texture detail may obscure some of the fine modelled detail - I think a lot will depend on your final light setup. Deep shadows and direct lights will obviously have a different effect to a flatter lighting scheme.

You might want to reduce the amount of distressing in certain areas. Whilst I can imagine the feet getting knocked around a lot and therefore displaying more wear and tear there will be other parts of the mech that are not so prone to casual damage and therefore less likely to rust.

The texture you have so far looks to me to be around the upper limit for distressing and I would imagine other parts - behind the 'knees' and inner 'thighs' for example - being considerably less worn and torn.

If you are using tS6.6 it may be worth making an approximation of your likely final light set-up - if you stick it on it's own layer you can hide it while textureing and unhide it from time to time so you can ensure you are getting the result you want. I use this technique a lot - a simple general purpose light setup for composing the image on one layer and the final 'atmosheric' lights on another layer.

That's excellent texturing madmouse. I like the worn and rusty look. I would add a scratch layer to the paint job, oil streaks on the cylinder rods sounds like a good idea (I'm dealing with leaking cylinders in my job quite often). The appearance of details pretty much depends on the lighting setup as wiz said. Faced the same issue with my mech models.

Anyway, if you continue with this quality, it surely will look superb.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.

The image below shows the foot at a closer scale to the finished article (although when it goes to print it will be rendered much bigger than here). I think I'm overdoing the detail already but that's always been one of my faults.

daybe, noko, Paul & GraySho:- all valid points but as I said above it may just get lost when seen at this scale. I'll have a play and see what happens. Thanks for the comments.

Mike:- All done with texture maps. Mapped with UVmapper Pro and the the texture are built up in PSP7 using multiple layers. I have a 2 monitor set up so its easy to see changes quite quickly.

Stephen:- Your right (as usual) and it was my intention to lessen the distressing in 'low damage' areas. As for the lighting, its a good tip and I do something similar already. Thanks.

Dele:- Hi buddy, its good to be back. Still a little rusty but maybe thats a perfect condition for the job at hand:)

Good point, might want a small oil spill under you mech ;), our big cat has a number of engine oil leaks, hydraulics holding up well though. If view is only going to be far away then this will probably be easier then what I thought. I do recommend the forks show some good wear. We have 7 forklifts and everyone of them probably should have there forks replaced due to being bent, abused, scraped up etc.. Plus back stop (not sure what it is called) on forks is also kinda beat up with the numerous loads being smashed into it from many drivers.

Yep, Oil spill is most definitely going in! I've got to keep the detail level reasonably high because I like to print at a high-ish dpi and I've been caught out before by skipping detail so I'm trying to get the balance between a detailed print and unnecessary work:) The 'bashed up' forks are also a must (you must of seen me drive before:) )

The texture looks good, but I'd remove at least 50% of that rust and add bare patinaed metal in it's place. Most, if not all, indoor warehouse lifttrucks(anytype) are less effected by weather because thier inside and even the ones that are of the indoor/outdoor type have less rust on them then this. Mainly because they are stored inside during bad weather. I'd also add object rubbing effects, like showing the white base coat of the paint to show through.

LOL in my book the only good banana is a dead banana:)

Chrono:- I take your point but I beg to differ. I drive forklifts for a living and some of the ancient old heaps that I have to drive are in a much worst condition than my mech and are kept indoors. I wanted to make my mech look like it was at the latter end of it life rather than straight from the show room, I was planning to lessen the wear higher up on the body but I figure the feet would of taken the brunt of the damage. But its a good suggestion about the undercoat showing through and I'll give it a try I certain places. Thank for the comments.
