AW is down YET AGAIN...outage after outage...first it was a "bad motherboard", then it was Facter fucking with the newsgroups, and now it's AW's ISP. What's the common variable? AWCI. It's obvious whoever's running AWCI's hardware is incompetent and shouldn't be. How about getting a RELIABLE service provider, Rick, JP, Roland, et al? Oh, wait, that would be too logical, eh? Idiots...

Well,

Actually the problem has nothing to do with us - there was a bad switch at
the host site , its in the process of being fixed, and it should be back up
very soon - if it isnt already. Unfortunatly, they had another hardware
problem, something of which we can only say we apologise for their problems.

Eep, you really need to know what you are talking about before you go off
like that. Hostility towards me is very un-necessary. Also, the newgroups
are on a completely un-related server to the rest of the AW universe, they
are not even located in the same physical area - it was down for about two
or three hours while we did some work on it - and, come on, its only a
newsgroup. I wasnt "fu*$ing" with anything - it was actually being fixed - I
also explained all of this to you in an email and on the actual webpages -
would you prefer I *fixed* the newsgroups, or would you prefer the problem
to of gotten worse and had no newsgroups for an even longer amount of time,
if at all (due to the nature of the problem)? I believe I did my job well,
as I usually do, and I also admit when I make mistakes. People were informed
that the newsgroups were going down via our webpages, which is the standard
way we inform our users of any kind of network outages - there is no other
efficient way of doing so than that.

I myself prefered to fix them, thus allowing everyone to actually be able to
use them - I am sorry if you dont feel the same and would of prefered for
the newsgroups to of been damaged - and, if taking them down for a short
amount of time to fix them is wrong, well, then I am guilty of making
something work better.

I reply to you out of courtesy, and you should try to do the same - because
it is actually my choice to reply to you or not. In this case, you do not
know the facts so I am kindly pointing them out to you - but, if you wish to
also be dealt with respect by myself, then you will yourself show a little
respect in return. I do not ask you to like myself, or the company, but I do
expect to be treated with respect and dignity for the help that I give to
you, and to other members of Activeworlds. The newsgroups are provided for
AW users to post, but as AW Support, I am under no obligation whatsoever to
reply to anything in here, as it is our company policy that all support is
to be handled in email for tracking purposes. I have been posting in this
newsgroups as a citizen since well before you yourself turned up in here
anyways, so I actually enjoy posting here and helping people out with a
little extra information here and there. But, again, I am under *no*
obligation to do so whatsoever.

If there is no mutual respect, then there will be no further correspondance
between yourself and I.

I may even stop posting in these newsgroups (sorry everyone else) - As I
said, I do so out of a wish to help and assist users of the Activeworlds
software in my personal time (time posting in here is done in my breaks, and
is not a part of my normal work practice nor is ever considered such), not
to be disrespected in such a manner as yours.

This is my last say on this matter, and further discussion will not be
entered into.

Sincerly

Way to go Facter!!

In my opinion AWCI's relationship with "the community" has improved
significantly since you joined them. Prior to that there existed a "bunker
mentality" that made it clear to us users that we were the enemy.

I have heard more than one AW employee BRAG about not reading the
newsgroups, although they seem to be quite aware of what's going on in them,
presumably by word of mouth from someone who does read them :)

In spite of the fact that there is a percentage of posters here who can't
spell or punctuate, a percentage who have nothing valuable to add to the
discussion, a percentage who's attitude has soured beyond the point of no
return, the newsgroups remain one of the best means of interaction between
the company and its users.

A question answered to one user in a newsgroup may satisfy the needs of
hundreds (unlike e-mail). Similarly, complaints that are without merit are
refuted more effectively here than via Telegram or e-mail. Bad arguments
wilt in the light of day, good arguments flourish. As painful as it may be
for AWCI employee to come here and be berated, that single act, read
through the good stuff and the cr*p, respond calmly, maybe even pick up a
new idea or two, is the most important thing an AWCI employee can do
(assuming the goal is to build a user base).

I urge you to continue reading and posting here, and encourage your
colleagues to do likewise. The cr*p won't go away, but believe me, a
significant number of readers can recognize the truth when it has been
presented.

The bunker mentality makes users feel like the enemy, and then ACT like the
enemy. Companies shrouded in secrecy are generally up to no-good.

Thats why I do post in here every so often - as I said, I have posted in
here since these newsgroups first existed back on Russ's servers, and I do
know the value of posting in here - but, I wont put up with disrespect, or
slander or anything else such as that - I never have when I posted in here
as a citizen, and I shant now.

So, any posts in here can be construed as courtesy posts - as long as the
courtesy is maintained on both sides then I shall do so, but if it is not,
then as I said, there is no obligation for me to continue to do so.

If I do post in here, there usually wont be many follow up's - because I do
not believe in flame wars and ther eis no way I will engage in them (been
there, done that!) - also, alot of the time I post in here will be my
personal opinion, and not the opinion of the company - whereas it does
reflect the opinion of the company I will usually use the words "we" instead
of "I" - but, I also will not be involved nor answer questions on company
policy or any such things as that - it is not my department and I have no
way to answer anything like that, nor can I answer anything to do with
beta's or software enhancements or anything to do with programming =)

I'm a techie and a web developer, and thats where I can help, with
technical/web matters - anything else, and I'm afraid you'll need to ask
someone else =)

And, I will usually comment in here by just joining into a conversation - if
you guys have specific questions - please email them to
support at activeworlds.com - thats me, you know =P

I do read these newsgroups every day, so know that what is said in here *is*
noticed =)

Oh yea, some "explanation". "The newsgroups are down and will be back up shortly." or some other bullshit statement. Give me a fucking break, Facter. Before you got sucked into AWCI's tangled web you wouldn't take such a bullshit statement (no reason there, by the way) in an instant. You've changed, man...you went over to the dark side...

I would prefer the newsgroups run correctly in the first place without them spontaneously "failing" for no explained reason, which you STILL haven't stated...

There isn't? How about posting a newsgroup post first? I was still able to READ the newsgroups; the problem was in POSTING to them. Had there been a message from you or some other clueless AWCIer about the newsgroup POSTING problem, I would not have had to email AWCI "support".

Hence you were fucking with them. How did they go down again? You never did (conviently) say...

OK so according to you if your ISP decided to mess up on you, you could call

Ok, Eep. I think you've had enough. I'm going to type this nice and
slowly so you can grasp it: "Shut... the... hell... up..."

The man is making an EFFORT, here. He doesn't HAVE to post in these
newsgroups. Hell, he doesn't even have to READ these newsgroups. Yet he
does, and he responds to post that are actually constructive and/or
informative. Yours, on the other hand, are nothing more than pissing and
moaning about how you perceive that AWCI has "fucked up". Blaming Facter
for the acts of Rick and JP are absolutely unfounded. Facter does not
own AWCI. Facter does not control AWCI. He is not responsible for the
acts of his superiors, so lay off!

As for the whole newsgroup issue, if the only way to fix the newsgroup
problems was to take them offline temporarily, then Facter did
everything he could to explain the situation. Does it really make sense
to post a message on a newsgroup if he's just going to be taking down
that same newsgroup? Besides, if *you* couldn't post anything, what
makes you think Facter would have had any better luck? If the problem's
with posting, then *no one* can post, not even Facter. Whatever happened
to that whole "thinking" thing you're so fond of, anyway? :P

I understand COF has left a bad taste in your mouth. Quite frankly, if
Rick or JP ever had the cohones to post in here, I'd probably have a few
choice words for them as well. However, that shouldn't prevent you from
at least acting respectful towards those who aren't even involved in the
process. Would you start bitching at Young Shamus if he suddenly found
the urge to post in here? If so, I find that sad.

I used to think you amusing. Sometimes you simply irritated me. But now
I just pity you. Please, for the sake of everyone here, and for your own

need to continue acting like a buffoon, then you can have the distinct

the reason a lot of ppl didn't stand up to eep is because he was

been reading these NGs for only a week or two, and I am already exhaustred
from frustration of reading his nonsensical ramblings... I think he's
probably chicken shit and feels he must bully in order to not be bullied,
i've seen this before.. he must have a low self esteem, inferiority complex
or something to feel the need to lash out at everyone for everything...
however this is false logic... If you want to be respected, then you should
respect.. but that's not what we're talking about.. we're talking about eep
and his inability to criticize constructively.. you don't have to be
negative to say something is not how it should be.. nor do you have to take
offense at every person who dares forget a period, or god forbid speak your
name.. or reply to a post to a specific person.. open your eyes eep, take a
look around, I'm amazed you act the way you do when you try to make yourself
look as though you've been around, and that you are so "superior" to
others.. if so, then you of all ppl should know how to get things done
right.. and how to treat people.. but you don't.. you've been sitting here
in the NG bashing everyone.. a lot of us try to help improve other users
experiences, but you make it very difficult, please take it easy eep, for

I don't recall ever blaming Facter for AWCI's problems (or the actions of=
Rick and JP, in particular). I DO think that Facter is taking on the "it=
's-not-my-fault" mentality of Rick and JP, however. He also skirts around=
issues like them.

Dunno, are YOU thinking, Goober? Doesn't look like it considering the new=
sgroups never went DOWN to the point of not being able to READ them; just=
POSTING to them (and perhaps just "Community" since that's the only one =
I tried at the time) was down. Since Facter seemingly disabled the abilit=
y to POST to the newsgroups, he could have simply posted he was going to =
do this instead of simply disabling posting and putting up a VERY vague s=
ystem status message on AW's website. The POINT I'm trying to make is com=
munication. Facter, like AWCI, fails to communicate things to its users. =
Yes, it's gotten MARGINALLY better in recent months, but only through CON=
TINUED persistance by disgruntled users/customers. What does this say abo=
ut AWCI? To me it shows they STILL don't know how to communicate with its=
users/customers and are STILL incompetent in MANY areas (AW development/=
direction, marketing, PR, etc, etc).

Um, but Facter IS involved in the process--ALL AWCI employees are and I W=
ILL spout off to them WHENEVER I god damn feel like it. Respect is earned=
, and so far I don't feel AWCI has earned MY respect enough for me to giv=
e THEM respect.

> Would you start bitching at Young Shamus if he suddenly found

Only if he played the same game Rick, JP, and now Facter do...but Shamus =
doesn't seem like that...Roland doesn't either...to an extent, but their =
INACTION makes them just as guilty as Rick and JP's actions. Shamus, Rola=
nd, HamFon, Flagg, etc, etc, HAVE the power to speak up against Rick and =
JP, but they don't seem to.

<shrug> I won't give up what I believe in...and I believe Rick and JP do =
NOT deserve to be in charge of AW. They have CONTINUALLY proven over and =
over and, yes, over again that they do NOT know how to deal with their cu=
stomers and the public/media relations, etc. They have played sneaky corp=
