Call me crazy but I really like my midis, but AW 3.2 makes them sound so
unbearably horrible I had to turn off my speakers. I reinstalled 3.1 as you might imagine. brantSep 25, 2001, 9:48pm
I haven't had any problems with midis - more likely than not your midi
driver is out of date. Check the Multimedia control panel and adjust the settings there. [View Quote] young phalphaSep 25, 2001, 10:04pm
Do you have the latest version of Windows Media Player? Its 7.1 I think, also, hardware specs as
well so I might be able to forward this to the beta NG's which Roland reads? Thanks :) [View Quote] trekkerxSep 25, 2001, 10:49pm

It has nothing to do with "Media Player". It's called "DirectSound", from a
company called "Microsoft". [View Quote] cozmoSep 25, 2001, 11:09pm
well the "Microsoft Media Player" now plays sounds for 3.2. Read up on it
before you blabl your mouth. [View Quote] young phalphaSep 26, 2001, 12:21am

haha windoze. what a waste of an OS kernel. who ever wrote it should be shot
right now. I haven't installed windoze on my computer since 3.x came out. Only RH Linux for me. [View Quote] goober kingSep 26, 2001, 1:55am

To answer the responses, yes I do have the latest sound drivers (in fact, I
can safely say that every last thing on my computer is the latest, unless I didn't want to upgrade of course). I *use* to have WMP 7.1 but for some reason, whenever I opened something in it, it would freeze my computer up for about a minute. I downgraded to 6.4 and that works for me. By the way, the midis sound just as bad in both versions of WMP. [View Quote] percipientSep 26, 2001, 4:23pm
3.1 used DirectSound, which in turn used the Microsoft Synthesizer for
midis. This is slower and quite processor intensive if you have a slow one like me, but sounds really good because it uses actual soundbytes of instruments (wavetable synthesis). 3.2 has now sent midi playing back to the soundcard itself. If you have an older soundcard (like I do) that uses cheapo FM synthesis instead of wavetable, or does a poor job of wavetable synthesis, the midis are going to sound lamer. They do for me. However, I've no 3D card, so am in software render mode, am loving that I can now see lights, fog and moving objects. Skyboxes look pretty flippin' cool too. I'm sticking with 3.2. Maybe your midis sound like crap for some other reason, maybe not. Just my thoughts. Percipient. [View Quote] wing.Sep 26, 2001, 5:19pm

Hey, where's the "official" review of 3.2 on awnews.com? Guess someone's
getting lazy :) [View Quote] tony mSep 26, 2001, 10:54pm
the FM synthesizer is most likely correct. My sound card's wavetable synthesis likes to freeze up Windows while AW is running, so I avoid it
and leave it on the FM synthesizer. yuck. there should at least be an option to pick Direct Music or the sound card... My sound system is insane on my computer (never wanted it to be, lol). It
has 4 devices that can play sound =P - The main sound card, motherboard onboard sound card, the graphic card, and the modem can all be used for sound output. [View Quote] percipientSep 30, 2001, 7:50pm
A graphics card with audio abilities? Never knew there was such a thing.
"Sounds" like a waste of space on the board, to me. "sw comit" <sam64 at jps.net> wrote... My sound system is insane on my computer (never wanted it to be, lol). He bought a pre-made computer. If it's a gateway, perhaps Ted should stop
listening to that cow that happens to sound like Brain on Animaniacs. ^_^ -- SW Chris Eagle Scout, Philosopher, Peacemaker, and... Kung Fu Master? http://www.winternet.com/~mikelr/flame1.html [View Quote] sw comitSep 30, 2001, 9:29pm
Gateway? No, and it's hardly pre-made, as in I told them exactly what I want
in it, they just put it together. As for the graphic card, I *think* it might have something to do with the TV tuner, but I dunno. [View Quote] |
