The New USWF Web Site is now up and we'd like to thank mj for his great work
in making and being the webmaster of it. Get the latest information about the USWF and also check out the CHALLENGE section of the site as the USWF starts up a new challenging and educational system more like a Role Playing Game of Real Life. www.geocities.com/uswf_head Regards, Anduin Lothar faberOct 20, 2000, 9:17pm
Sorry to disappoint you, but i would not thank your webmaster if i were
you. My personal oppinion: 1) he put up a rediculous warning page as if you were about to enter an adults only area 2) your home page is not a home page but a navigation help page, pretty redundant 3) your Webmaster has a a Spelling Problem (capitalization) 4) your longer texts (e.g. CHALLENGE) show that your webmaster used a way to TINY font that noone can stand for more than 3 lines of text. their css, badddddd.. my personal thoughts on cross-browser webdesign, are: it's needed, but, it's someone's own choice not to code it that way. the site is ugly, anyway. i mean, not in my opinion ugly, but just downright ugly... no offense mj. i could go on, but, i've been evil enough as it is. and. if you're running a non-frames browser, eh. holy moses. that's only been around since.. what? ns2.2 or so? not quite sure, around there. and javascript. run windows? you have to have a virtual machine and js enabled. that's what much of windows is now, if you've ever looked at the option to costumize folders. ah well. plus the fact it be on geocities. augh.. count dracula oOct 21, 2000, 8:22am
The site looked pretty ok in my browser(IE 5.0) ,once it had loaded.I have
noticed one thing in this newsgroup (probably in other also);people seems never to have anything good to say about anything.I think one should at least sometimes give some positive response, after all people who make their webpages, objects, textures or whatever do it because they want to contribute.I am sure that there would be a lot more activeworlds related webpages "out there" if not every attempt was considered crap from the very beginning. That do not motivate to develop the webpage. If one do not like a site then one do not have to go there,it is not harder than that. I guess the saying goes around here, "you gotta rough it up to stay in AW".
:) Seriously though, most of the more experienced users out there are not insultive or trying to lower someone's self esteem. Sure, there are some people who just look at something and say that is just plain stupid, ugly, ridiculous, and so on without any evidence or perspective. But most just want the users who contribute to AW the best looking, so they criticize to the last spelling mistake or fog setting. Nothing is meant to be taken seriously or with offense in here, just with an open mind. :) Look at the thread in here for example, all criticisms were meant to improve, and there's no "You couldn't know how to HTML if your life depended on it". :) It's the only way you can grow, anyways. I didn't mean to offend Anduin.. im just saying, the web page is poorly
designed. the USWF itself is a good thing -- - Chandler56 "Use your free will to the ULTIMATE advantage: Assassinate the Government!" ____________________________________________________________ [View Quote] anduin lotharOct 21, 2000, 8:19pm
First of all, please everyone keep posting your complaints and comments.
Because after all, you need complaints and suggestions to get something better than it is. So it's not offending me in any way that people are complaining, it's actually helping out as I will post these to the webmaster so hopefully they may be fixed soon. Everything that we fix I will further post to let you know of the changes 8^D Best Regards, Anduin Lothar anduin lotharOct 21, 2000, 8:22pm
Chandler, I don't need a new webmaster. mj is great at his work, we'll just
take all these complaints to fix the problems. This being the case you may wish to talk to whoever is responsible for coding the page... I'm a Netscape user... I'l not be going any further into the Site... I figure if the Home Page can't be read without being forced to switch to another Browser then there's likely not much for me further on down (in the Site...) I don't switch Browser unless 'I' want to... I certainly don't do it because a Site tells me to... Maybe look into less 'bells and whistles'. Like who needs JAVAScript and Frames on an info Site... If I wanted to be impressed I'd go elsewhere... IF I were to use your Site it would be for INFO... What this says to me (and maybe only me) is if 'they' aren't even able to get the code right for all Browsers then of what value is the Info within... I'l just go elsewhere (someplace that 'can' code for all Browsers...) My 2 cents... [View Quote] wingOct 21, 2000, 11:32pm
This happens with MSNBC's news site as well, when it fully loads it self
corrects. CSS sheets overlapping or some other complex stuff [View Quote] > Hmmm... can't seem to reply to the original post... anyway... > > Was just checking out the Site... and stopped at the Home Page (which > is the page after the 'warning Page'...) > > I get this: > > [Image] > > I'l assume that you don't actually 'wish' to exclude Netscape users... > This being the case you may wish to talk to whoever is responsible for > coding the page... I myself am a lame 600x480 display resolution user. I know most people
nowadays runs 800x600 and greater, but I don't have 20/20 vision and don't like changing all the sizes of everything to just run a higher resolution and get annoying headaches from my inability to get adequate refresh rates and annoying flickering, etc, etc, etc, yada. My two cents and a old shoe to throw in extra is design a site for use to run 640x480, otherwise I burn out my scroll buttons, lol :) I don't know if anyone else out there feels the same about sites designed for > 640x480 or not but thought I would see what others thought. I likewise love the concept of USWF and that's all that matters in the ending. :) And for all those using nbci.com or Xoom to host sites....please get a REAL hosting service!!! Again, in no way am I trying to offend anyone, but throw some old shoes and 2 cents out the door. Ox64 [View Quote] wingOct 22, 2000, 3:17pm
I also use 640x480, but its because my monitor sucks ass. Theres simple
javascript out there to resize websites to fit whatever browser size the user chooses. [View Quote] > I myself am a lame 600x480 display resolution user. Great work yes very great work Aduin Lothar. We all admire your poor job.
:-) Anyways, your webmaster needs improvement in the following: 1) Support for all types of browsers as possible. 2) No warning page. 3)The webmaster has putted Capitals in Netscape and should not be NetScape. InterNet?????? It's Internet okay?!?!?!? Learn the real way the programs should be spelled. 4) I'd test it on Netscape and if doesn't work properly, try to have it work. 5) You never did anything with me when I joined which shows very very very poor service. 6) On the right side, the scrool bar or whatsoever, it's arrows are hardly visible. Make a better color for it so it's more visible. Otherwise, some people may be confused and cannot tell how it works like I when I visited. And the only reason why I got a bit confused on it is because the arrows on it is nowhere nearly visible. sheesh 7) Don't mind me posting this exact message to the forums excluding # 7. You should improve in the above comments for a better website otherwise let it be kinda crappy. [View Quote] anduin lotharOct 23, 2000, 12:46pm
Dennis13,
I don't even recall you being a member of the USWF. All I remember is you "applying" to join your just made town when you barely had anything built yet and only really wanted a copy of the bot. (Plus you have less than 5 residents in your town). The USWF requires a Town to have a minimum of 5 residents when joining because for towns the USWF is a subnetwork for the UTN! Also Dennis13, I remember you keeping on begging for bots and all this. Please also do not start harassing about our website and webmaster, other's have put complaints but have not actually "insulted" the people that have been hard at work with it, whilst you stupidly start picking on the webmaster about spelling. Saying a website is crappy is just plain stupid. It would have been better to say it needs some work. But saying somrething is crappy is plain insulting to some people. --- Anduin Lothar [View Quote] anduin lotharOct 26, 2000, 4:27am
Hi all,
Thanks to all the complaints and suggestions the USWF will now be undergoing new site design, We will be remaking the website to support all browsers and features. If you don't like frames we can also link to a frameless alternative and so on. Thanks Again, Anduin Lothar tony56Oct 26, 2000, 7:21pm
that's good to hear :)
