yea i know, someones going to say I should ahve posted it the topic i
already started.
I can't, out look cleaned it out.

so newbies know whats going on im reposting with an addition, peopel that
read all of this pleace scroll down to the addition.

[what is going on]
Ok my CD-ROM will not run any CD's sept the game Diablo.
I am not sure why it just stoped rerading all my other CD's
I did buy a CD-ROM cleaner like some segested, it will not read that eather.
I can't reinstall windows due to the reasions stated above.
I tried changing drive letters to see if by some chance it was not seeing
that letter, that did not help eather.
All my IDE cables are in good working order, even chaged the IDE cables just
to make sure, still no fix.
I know its not my CD-ROM or my CD's
1 all my CD's are in exelent condition, and my CD-ROM "WILL" play 1 CD
only so I know it can read.

[addition]

Divice status
This divice is working properly.

In the device manager then in the settings for the drive it is set at this.
Target ID: 0 Firmware revision: m02
Logical unit number: 0
options
Disconnect checked
Sync data transfer unchecked
Auto insert notification checked
Removable greyed out
Int 13 unit greyed out
DMA checked

Current drive letter assignment: D:
Start drive leter nothing
End drive letter nothing

reasion for the nothing on thouse is there is no D listed to pick from.
what ever drive letter i pick it will not show up in the start or end area.

Well I'm just going to suggest this.. bring it to a shop and have them
repair it. After so many posts it gets annoying to keep saying this. Oh,
posting the same topic over and over won't get you any more responses then
normal ;)

I guess it is an IDE drive, not SCSI.

When 2 IDE devices hang on the same cable, one needs to
be jumpered as master, one as slave device.

As you have a second cable now, you could try to use the
second IDE controller on your motherboard with the CD.
Before you do that, you need to set the master/slave
jumper to "master" and check, if the second IDE controller
is enabled on your motherboard.

If this solves your problem, your HD will even be slightly
faster - a second positive effect.

If your CD is already jumpered as "master" and on the same
controller as the HD, this must cause trouble and could
explain the strange drive letter behaviour.

If this does not help, you should check the devices. Sometimes
windoze 95/98 "thinks", that it has to install a new device
driver although there already is one. When 2 drivers try to
access the same device this can cause strange behaviour too.

If it is SCSI :

Make sure to jumper the SCSI-ID of the CD higher than 2,
because some controllers/drivers expect HDs on the first
two SCSI IDs (historical reasons).

I played with the "Enable Disconnect" setting once on an
U2W Adaptec - result was that it crashed WindowsNT with
a bluescreen already on startup. Check the settings in the
SCSI controller menu on startup (if it has such a thing),
maybe you find the "removable" problem there too.

My primary IDE has only my hard drive on it, my secondary IDE has only the
CD-ROM on it.
Both the hard drive and the CD-ROM are masters of there IDE's

My #1 brian buster is why is it only reading 1 CD and refusing all others?
none of my CD's are scratched or damaged.
the only CD it is reading is the game Diablo created by www.blizzard.com
I have other games by them and its not reading them.
I just bought a CD-ROM cleaner and it will not read that eather.
Im just worried if i buy a new drive that I will still have the same
problem.
The dive must be fine or it wouldnt read that 1 CD.
The only error I get on all CD's but that one is divice not ready.
note: All my CD's worked fine 3 months ago.
I can't accsess the drive from DOS mode, I can for the diablo CD but no
others.
Fill ree to post all or any thing/things I can try.
List me a whole book, I will read it all, im desprit here.

No I am not trying to advertize the game diablo, that is the only CD it will
read.

Your computer might have cached data from the original Diablo.. I read that
sometimes the first Diablo would do that especially if you used spawn to
install it. So it's not really reading it, just reading what it saved and
playing it as though it's been autoplayed *recognizes the cd as you put it
in*.

The full version has the spawn version in it. It was part of Blizzards
pro-copying days. Until they got gayed up by another company.

Are you sure there's nothing wrong with all of your other CDs? If it can read one, it should read *all* normal CDs. Take it in to a shop to get it looked at...

computer.

$65? Ouch... Maybe take a look around in the store for some similar models? If you do replace it, try to keep the old one around... Never know what you could use it for :)

well, go to friends with your CDs, see if the CDs work there, if they do,
your drive has said bye bye, you'll just have to buy a new one (probably
cheaper than repairing it)

I think you meant "if they don't" ? that is, if the drive doesn't work at his friend's either...

Oh, and don't keep that much quoted text down there ;)

It wouldn't help much....just slows performance of the hard drive because of
the added data coming in.

What a ripoff :-p
Its only $30 flat rate here...$45 for a half hour of service too

Anyways...know what else is in your system? If not, welp CD-ROMs are pretty
cheap.

if they don't it would be the CDs... I meant "go try it with another drive
on another system", I highly doubt that a bunch of CDs have got messed up
like that, sounds like a hardware problem...

Ahhhh ok, try his CDs, I thought you said to try plug his drive in a friend's system to see if it works (I think he should try that
instead)

yes, in a way it could have... it *****IS***** your CD-ROM drive (or another
hardware failure), ok! just do as I and Fox have been saying, take your
drive and CDs to another system, check there with the drive there and the
CDs and with your drive there and the CDs...

Odd, I've just started experiencing the same problem. Many of my CDs no
longer work with certain drives and certain drives with only certain CDs.

However, since I have like 5 drives on some systems, it's a non-existant
point to me.
