I would like to see some form of games bots put in AWGate hidden away in the
tree's or something, chess and checkers etc.

Say... 3 boards?

Good idea. The Gate needs *something* to entertain the tourists.
They get bored, but a lot of tourists won't go to other worlds to explore.

Good idea, but just image the flood of bold text with 3 chess/checker bots
and a GK...

beside the point.

Whats the point in having game worlds then?

Maybe we should encourage people to go explore the other worlds and not just
hand around in Awgate GZ, if you were to install chess etc in AW Gate it
would be identicle to AW GZ.

AWGate is a gateway to ActiveWorlds, a place to get directions and advice in
AW.

Hm..

Well, could they get a revival of awgames instead? I'd prefer that over
games in awgate.

Have to say I agree with Simba here, as I think the idea of gate was to
have a portal to the worlds, special for newbies.

Upon further consideration, I retract my support of this idea. : )
I also agree with Simba.

I still think The Gate needs to be a little more snazzy, though.

I guess I should expalin "snazzy". ; )
The Gate is the first place newbies see. It's our "front door", so to speak.

Shouldn't it be as welcoming as possible? Bright colors. More examples of
kinetic sculptures.Multi-lingual signs.
Something that says, "WOW! If The Gate looks THIS CooL, imagine what the
rest of AW looks like!"

Which would lead them into a false sence of expecting something very, very
good as soon as they enter Alpha World.

Which, of course, they won't find unless they go a good length out into the
world.

I disagree,

It is important to demonstrate possibilities without the need for the user
to know very much about the product you are showing off, and one of the most
simple ways of doing that is a few very simple point-and-click games.

New users should not have to 'work' to experience a working example of at
least some of the possibilities, and should not have to leave range of the
support staff during that time.

Sorry Strike
I understand your idea, but I realy dont support this, AWgate was and still
is a portal to rest of the worlds in AW, if game now, next time people will
ask for build, and we have alphaworld nr 2.
Just think of all the effort private worlds do, those efforts drowns with
world like that.

They could just go to AW world and play there,

But then they are out of range of support.

I doubt a PK wants to teach an absolute newbie or the 100 or so of them a
week about using AW.

I totally agree with Strike. Although I can see Simba's point of view also.
However, numerous times a tourist will ask everyone at the gate to play a
game with them but nobody wants to leave the gate area. Sometimes a tourist
will actually go to the games, only to return back to the gate because there
was nobody to play the game with, and nobody there to help answer questions
about how to use the program. Surely a simple game of checkers would suffice
at the gate? It would give new users an idea of what is possible. It would
give them a taste of what a bot is. I remember it took me about a month to
figure out what people kept referring to as a bot. Not everyone is computer
or virtual reality friendly! ;-"D

We do need to make the gate area more enticing to not only the new visitors
but also the folks who have been a tourist for about a week and haven't YET
found a good enough reason to register. Exploring is fine.... using those
portals to the various GZ's is ok.... but usually those GZ's are empty.
Just think about what those new folks are thinking when they expect to find
other people there to talk to and make friends with ... and there is nobody
but vast areas to get lost in with no maps to guide them. Quite a few times
I've recommended bored tourists to go to AWUniversity to learn how to build,
but the signs there are overwhelming and can be very confusing for a person
who isn't user friendly. Oftentimes that world is empty and the poor,
overwhelmed and very bored tourist returns to the gate and after a few days
of doing nothing but chatting, decides it's not worth his time or effort.
The nifty sculptures are nice to look at and marvel at. But there is nothing
around the gate area indicating to the newbie that it is possible to build
them or how easy it is to learn how. To the new user everything at the gate
is just a pretty decoration. Nothing more. And some of those signs at the
gate are dead links, especially that NASA sign.

Advertising issues aside... we need to concentrate on how to keep our
tourists interested in the program. Leaving them to wander aimlessly about
to look at pretty decorative objects and landscaping isn't gonna do it. They
need interactive things. There.com has nifty toys to play with such as guns,
buggies you can actually drive, hoverboards you can ride, etc. How can AW
Gate compete with that? Game bots can be programed to whisper to the person
in blue, just like the CA does. Or perhaps in another color to reduce the
confusion. I'm sure SOMETHING can be done, if only AW would take the chance!
