Maybe not a fully featured one... e.g. if it would be too hard to get
the web window to work with another browser, just remove that feature.

It's just annoying trying to emulate AW on Linux because some parts
don't work properly, or emulate reeeeally slowly. Also since a TrueType
font is used in AW, it doesn't show properly at all in Linux (especially
on signs) because Linux TrueType rendering engines are crappy because
they have to get round patents. Nasty patents. :(

Until then, AW addicts like me are forced to use Windows. :(

Better to expand the userbase too, instead of half-assedly implementing
features and never fixing the bugs. I don't think the problem is they
don't want to, I think the problem is their programmers can't do it.

They have Chrispeg now. Also there are tools that can help with the
conversion of Windows programs to Linux programs.

Expanding the userbase is something the other 3D programs AREN'T doing
though, which would give AW an advantage.

There's userbase: Internet Explorer users
Second Life's userbase: Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS X (still in beta)

As you can see, they're only catering to the most numerous groups.

Well the only thing that doesn't work is the web browser and media crashes,
though im sure that could be fixed if u try...

I use it in software rendering mode its not that slow.. though i haven't
bothered trying to get OpenGL working..

Other issues are when you select an object in building it really lags up and
stuff...

Yeah, when you select an object in building it does lag. What emulator
is that? And distro? Etc etc etc.

I'm using WINE on Gnome on Fedora Core 2.

Wow! You've really got AW running (crawling) in Linux?

I was trying to figure that out myself, and actually got the browser to
start in Wine (Fedora Core 2) but could never get the graphics to show.
Someone told me that I had to get directx to emulate in Linux to get the
graphics to work. Hadn't looked into that yet.

I read that you're using it in software render mode.. perhaps I'll try that.

Would you be willing to post your installation and setup instructions for
us?

Thanks!

Before you run the browser, open aworld.ini and locate.

mode=

change the mode to 2 to set it to software rendering mode and it should work
fine.

Yeah, I had AW running on Red Hat 9 with WINE a while back (since upgraded
to FC2 and haven't tried since). I had the issue where I had to use
software to get any graphics.
