Maze Guardian

Mar 15, 2000, 12:58pm
Hello,
I have been working on a maze on AW which is always changing and
evolving. When people come visit and finish the maze, I put there name
up on a board.

What I don't know entirely (cause the maze is getting to be pretty
large) is wheter or not the players have been through the whole maze, or
if they have flown, or if they shift-walked their way through it.

I would like to be able to write a bot that would keep track of placed
triggers throughout the maze. These triggers would be along a path that
players would HAVE to have taken to get through the maze.

Then, when the player gets to the end of the maze, the bot itself could
put the player's name.. and the current date, up on the board for me.

As I said, I'm currently working on this in world AW, so I can't control
the shift-walk thing, and think that it's either on or off for the whole
world anyway, right?

Come visit the Mystery Maze at aw 1219.6N 7759.3W 0.0a 360 to see it for
yourself.

If you think you might be able to help me with this maze, please catch
me online.. I'm almost always on after 5pm EST.

Thanks,

Running AW through Linux?

Jul 27, 2004, 2:17pm
Forgive me if this sounds naive.. but I've been following the newsgroup for
awhile, and I think I understand.. correct me if I'm wrong... :)

The SDK isn't for allowing someone to actually RUN AW (browse worlds, build,
chat, etc) in Linux (or other OS)..
...but instead allows someone to create helper applications in those other
OS.. correct?

I have been talking with someone who would like to run AW, but he's a Linux
user.

If someone could point me to docs about running AW through Linux (if it
really is possible) I would appreciate the help.

Really, there has to be a better solution that this very lame and desperate
posting.

Perhaps you should raise the funds to open an adequate world, provide
something for someone to experience and allow them
to decide if they'd like to donate and aide in your world, rather than
blindly giving you money for something that may very well
be nothing they are interested in?

You also do not mention anything about this RPG to entice anyone.
What genre will it be?
Any screenshots of the existing world you are currently building in?
Will there be extra fees to play?
How established are you as a programmer for the bots that will be running
your RPG?
What ISP and types of servers will be hosting your world so that those who
donate can be certain that it will remain up when
they want to use it?

Just a friendly (and a bit sarcastic, I admit) reply.

World Server Administrator Tool Enhancement

Nov 20, 2001, 5:22pm
Hello,

I have not the programming skills necessary to even begin to think how this
could be done, but
it would be very nice in helping cut down the Screen Clutter. :)

How about, when you minimize the Server Administration window, it could be
shrunken to a very
small size and all for only the basic information?

-------------------------------
| x users - (Worldname) |
| x users - (Worldname) |
-------------------------------

It would be the same information you get when you hover your mouse over the
Icon in the System
Tray, but could be visible at all times... just a little button sized thing
in the corner so you could just
glance at it without having to hover your mouse?

Just a thought.

Any ideas?

command line shortcuts

Apr 23, 2003, 5:20pm
I don't know how this could be incorporated, but I was thinking about Cell
Space usage...

What if we could use shortcuts in the command line instead of completely
typing out the command?

create color = cc
create texture = ct
create sound = csound
create sign = csign
create solid = csolid
create name = cname
create noise = cnoise

Or, even finding a character that could be used in place of "create" ?

I know it doesn't seem like it could save that much space, but you'd be
amazed how many times
I have created a "control rod" (using create name) to be able to use the
same texture on various
objects in one area and it actually helped me save space!

Just a thought to possible get some ideas going?

Wow! You've really got AW running (crawling) in Linux?

I was trying to figure that out myself, and actually got the browser to
start in Wine (Fedora Core 2) but could never get the graphics to show.
Someone told me that I had to get directx to emulate in Linux to get the
graphics to work. Hadn't looked into that yet.

I read that you're using it in software render mode.. perhaps I'll try that.

Would you be willing to post your installation and setup instructions for
us?

Thanks!

New Avatars for AlphaWorld

May 4, 2005, 6:26pm
While hanging at AWGZ, we started a discussion about how old the avatars on
world AW really were.

I know that two of us there have been with ActiveWorlds since mid and late
1999, and neither of us could
name one new avatar that has become available there since that time!

This would be one of the easiest updates to world AW that could be made.

I can understand wanting to have special avatars for the homepages, as to
entice people to bown worlds,
but even if they were to add the ones from AWGate, that would be an
improvement.

Just my $.02 worth..
...wonder if anyone will actually read this and make a change?

New Avatars for AlphaWorld

Well, if you think about it, AWGate has had more avatar renovations than
world AW has.. everytime they change the theme on AWGate, they tend to
change/add avatars there.

That's why I mentioned I'd even be happy to see the AWGate avatars ported
over.. because even they are newer than the AW ones.

Wish for respect to the AW Community...

...from AWI.

Why is it, that whenever their servers go down.. or they feel the need to
shut down world AW, they don't even bother to create a simple update to
their tech/status page explaining what's going on?

Even if it were to say "We're sorry for the unexpected outages at this time,
we are working on resolving the issue." then at least we'd have an idea that
they were actually aware of the outage(s)... regardless of if they really
know what's wrong or not. :-p

Easy to use LocalPath objects

Jan 24, 2006, 1:08pm
I think it would be a fairly easy thing to incorporate, but at the same
time, I understand what could occur.

Within the registry for AW Prime (world AW), would it be possible to add
generic item names that people could then create local versions of their own
objects that would appear only in their browser?

Let me explain a bit better my idea:

I found a few objects I would like to use in world AW and then renamed them
after the "x0" objects (which are the playing card objects). While in my
localpath, whenever the browser comes across a card object that I have
replaced, instead of loading the small card, it instead loads the object
from my localpath.

For example, I renamed one of Kitiara's Cabins "x0d.cob", zipped it into
"x0d.zip", and then placed it into my localpath. Now, whenever I come
across that object, instead of seeing a small playing card, I see her custom
cabin.

Granted, anyone else that comes into the area still only sees the stray
playing card, but if they were to put my renamed x0d.zip into their
localpath and enable use of the localpath, then they would also see the
cabin.

Example here:
http://bastillion.net/img/AWE-examples/x0d-standard.gif <---what standard
AW user sees
http://bastillion.net/img/AWE-examples/x0d-bastmod.gif <---renamed objects
in localpath

http://bastillion.net/img/AWE-examples/xobjects-standard.gif <---cards
out in a field
http://bastillion.net/img/AWE-examples/xobjects-bastmod.gif <---becomes a
carousel when objects renamed!

Now, I understand that AWI would prefer people to purchase their own worlds
and develop their own object paths, but what about the userbase that cannot
afford to do that? Why limit their creativity if they could make an area in
the massive public world AW where they could share their objects with
friends/visitors to their area?

My suggestion would be to set aside these generic object names in the
registry for people to use:

lp(1-X).rwx where X can be decided.. perhaps even something like
lp001.rwx, lp002.rwx, lp083.rwx... you get the idea.

Granted, with such generic names, the person using their localpath would
have to remember or snapshot what objects they are using under those names,
but that would still allow for much more customization I would think.

This wouldn't be a case where abuse would come in, I don't think, as only
the person(s) using the localpath would be affected visually.

If someone wanted a huge castle object with lots of polygons and intense
graphics, then only they would see that and be forced to deal with the lag.
:)

What does everyone think about this idea?

I have also decided to post this idea into my forums:

Re: Random crashing

Nov 5, 2001, 7:43pm
*FIRST* Sorry to cross-post this, but I am unable to post into the Beta
Newsgroup where I found it.

I have been having this same problem for quite some time.

It used to happen almost constantly.. then I reformatted my hard drive,
re-installed Windows 98, installed the lastest (last)
driver set for my video card, and then only upgraded to DirectX 7.0 as I
think that 8.0a did not work with my video card
which is now defunct.

Since doing the above, I now crash only a few times.. and I too can avoid
completely crashing sometimes.. by using Task Manager
and ending aworld.exe... BUT NOT ALWAYS (Most of the time it's a complete
FREEZE)

AW Browser 3.2 Build 397

DirectX 7.0

Windows XP Home (A Few Questions before I get it)

Dec 6, 2001, 2:01am
I just started using WinXP Pro... lemme tell you what I'm encountering as
far as AW..

[View Quote] I have been running Win98, hosting my personal world AND the object path
from Win98.

When I upgraded to WinXP... AW browser works fine...

.....BUT...

The AW World Server doesn't seem to be working, as people try to log into my
world and find themselves
all alone and nothing to look at (nothing is loading). It puts them in
world Solitude, but they would be the
only ones there, and no objects what so ever in site.

So, I tried using the default AW object path, since I'm not sure I have the
server side software (IIS as it is called in XP)
and my DNS2GO client working just right.. but thought the AW world server
software should work..

Nope. Same problem as above.

I thought I read somewhere that XP has built in firewall software... have
yet to find where to configure that.. might be one
of my biggest problems.

Anyone else?

Actually, that isn't happening for me.

When I view all the pictures I have stored on my Geocities account (using

I'm finding that I'm gonna have to add that extra coding that sk8man_1

won't help me with the builds

Apr 22, 2003, 12:02pm
Oh man! You really hit that on the head.

If you were to actually walk n/s/e/w of AW's GZ... all you would find is a
bunch of non-protected (covered land) builds that have been vandalized and
covered with all kinds of junk!

People have gone through there and put up walls that flash (hiding what was
there previously), signposts galore, scattered random objects and anything
else they could fit into the crevices that were left uncovered. :(

It's become quite an eyesore. Someone on the AW staff (with caretaker
rights) really should do something about all the "spam" and "junk" and
"graffiti" that has popped up all over the place!

If I were someone new to Activeworlds, and I wanted to look at something
other than the AWGate... when I started to explore world AW (the PRIME
BUILDING WORLD!) I think I would lose all interest pretty fast.

Just my opinion of course,

Bastillion

BTW: If anyone at AW was willing to pay me to do this, I would be more than
happy. ;^) *HINT HINT*
Maybe even just renew my P20 world license, making it a P30 or P40? *smirk*

Well, for one thing, I cannot recall the last time (if ever even) that I
have seen the Immigration Officer announce that some type of event was going
to be held at AW GZ... no chats about >topic<, no Chess Tourney (there IS a
fully functional CHESS BOT there!) or even a scheduled touring of some of
the older builds of AW in it's early days.

Again, the tours would probably be nothing more than people seeing what
vandals have done to the place, as no one has bothered to clean up the area
100x100 around AWGZ... but I'm sure I already mentioned that in a previous
posting. ;-P

What I see, appears to be a graphic... you said the "Muscle Worm" text..
which I see as
Muscle (in blue) and

I also see the same thing with Piggy Backs
Piggy (in Red) and
Backs (in orange) slightly behind it.

These graphics would be easy to create with Photoshop, and maybe even some
of the cheaper graphical programs. I believe it can even be created within

World AW IP Change, and AWMapper down.

May 27, 2003, 11:11pm
(Cross posted to Community and General.Discussion)

Well.. that was an unexpected annoyance...

Apparently, they moved the World AW to a new server sometime today, and the
IP address changed for it.
Why does this concern me?

My firewall software wouldn't let me connect to world AW.. but it did let me
into AWGate.

I had to find the new addy, adjust my firewall.. not really that hard to
do, but would have been nice of AW to let us know that they were doing to do
that! :)

And.. in the process of doing that... apparently they have taken down the
AWmapper..

http://mapper.activeworlds.com only returns DNS errors now. :-P

Nice of them to let us know they would do that too.. and they really need to
change their website now as well.. since they still have it linked there.

Did Active Worlds Inc drop the ball here?

Jun 11, 2003, 11:36pm
I've got a subscription to the US Magazine PC Gamer, and I just recently got
my latest issue.

This issue (July 2003 Vol. 10, No. 7) covers not only their standard
selection of games, but also covers "116 Online Games".

Now, I wasn't expected to possibly find "Active Worlds" within this listing
because even though AW does host some games, and even some pretty kewl
gaming worlds, it's main existence is as a 3D Chat/Creation program.

BUT THEN: I was looking through the listings, and I happened to find both
"Second Life" AND "There.com" listed!

OOPS! What a shame that these other two chat programs happened to be
recognized by this very Popular Game Magazine, and Active Worlds wasn't even
mentioned!

I've not even SEEN any advertising within PC Gamer, or my other
subscription, PC Magazine....

Perhaps PC Gamer didn't really advertise that they were going to be covering
some Online Games/Programs before they released this issue... I'll have to
check.

What a shame though, that Active Worlds couldn't be included in this
listing.

Just something I noticed today.

Wav files sound like white noise

After they d/load into my cache, all I can hear is "static", or "white

Can anyone explain why this might be?

Thanks,
