I think itd be awesome if aw made a boxed edition of activeworlds sold
it for like 70 bucks or something have some awesome screenshots, nice
foldout flap describing it, and have a year cit with it. Like they enter an
activation code from the box when they buy or something.

it would get allot more of the reallife gamers onto aw, make them a profit

also maybe sell timecards too like everquest, or other online games where u
can buy them for time :-)

just an idea, any opinions? positive or negative?

I think it's a good idea.. but getting product onto retail shelves takes
a lot of money.

They do already have a mechanism in the program to retrieve content
from a local CD though. If the CD had the megapath on it that could
install to your harddrive, it would make the browser fly if the content
was stock objects, and AW would save bandwidth too (especially when
you mutliply it by the number of worlds that use stock megapath
objects).

Oh yeah! That would be an excellent idea! And it wouldn't be the 1st time
they did that either. I still have a CD they made of many of the worlds'
content running back during version 2.0. It helped a lot back in my dialup
blues days..lol. Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy of the version 2.0
browser so I can't visit them.

Ew, having the version 2.0 browser would not help you: it is disabled
in the AW universe :)

That is one of the BEST ideas to date. To have a Shrink Wrap version of
AW sell on the Shelves of stores all across American Soil, and even have
Euro Version available too. Japanese and more, this will surely enhance
the AW community as a whole!

Hi Xela! It wouldn't work even in "Skip" mode, offline with the OP pointed
to the CD?

I don't know. But in that case, the universe server is not involved,
so it would not censure the browser. On the other hand, the world
server might not like it either, who knows :)

only way I'd buy it in a store would be if it was a LOT more appealing. They
need to seriously do a face lift to the browser and make it a lot better. If
you look at all the cool new games coming out and the awesome graphics and
features they have, I'd rather buy one of those than AW. I'm not saying that
AW should focus on being more of a game, since it is a chat program, but
having better renderware features available to the users makes it more fun.
AWI developers need to tap into these features and make it so that users can
interact more and have more freedom to develop their own fun. The browser
now would have been a big hit years ago, but the times are changing and AW
needs to keep up.

Yes, excellent idea.

But just like my idea i have had for the past 6 years for AW COMMERCIALS, it
will NEVER happen.

Sorry C P, but AW just won't budge on marketing their product at all.

AW Commercials I have also thought about... Not suggested though, as I know
the answer would be something along the lines of we cant do it!
I dont think AW has enough money to go into that mainstream retail and
advertising YET

I read in some notes for advertising tips that the best advertising is news
reports on human interest stories.
For instance;
1.A romance true story that some talk show covered.
2.An AW user that did some heroic feat.
3.A story about a Net chat site that catches a person causing it's users
grief and it's company money?:)....hint hint

I would suspect actually, TV ads would be out of the question right now,
however, banner ads at websites would work... like big company
websites.......

Not sure if you were talking about the browser itself, but the 3.5 browser
got a nice facelift :) looks pretty good more stylized

It would be more interesting if the use of skinned interface could be
performed, getting rid of that boring windows style.
So many IM's these days plus many other programs where you can download
extra skins for your interface.

Plus it would allow these that play games, for instance in AWRPG to have
their own RPG skin and like wise for other "game" worlds.

That would breath new life into the client plus give all those of artistic
yearning to create new themes for the client. Plus give new life to a
otherwise boring interface. And give AW a edge in competition against
"other" VR environments...

i guarentee it will never work. aw sucks, and if i didnt already have it, i
sure as hell wouldnt bother getting it. the only reason im still here is
because of all the friends i've made, and the fact that my connection is too
slow for both there and Second life.
AW just doesn't make it as a game, or a serious source of entertainment. if
i were in charge, i'd think about businesses, and 3d homepages, of a
diffrent kind, where all the data is stored on a website, so no need for
hosting, like Adobe Atmoshpere. and like adobe, have a builder program and
stuff for offline building, wont be too hard to implant im sure. ofcourse,
that would mean there would be no chat for the non-hosted versions.

oh, and the fact that you have to pay for land, in my opinion sucks, they
should sell packages, like Macromedia Flash, where you pay for the software,
not for the space that doesnt exist. these packages will not have building
enabled though, and wont be a part of the aw universe, just a seperate
website type thing.

What about print ads in computer magazines? That shouldn't be nearly as
costly as buying commercial time on television.

If citizens donated something like $10 or $5 or even less or more towards an
advertising project it might work...., a good suggestion to make to AWI...

It seems insane rambling is OK.. so....

Red ink drips like blood from my pen as I write the check to the man
with the cable cutters. Don't cut me off.. don't sever the umbilical cable
that ties me to the worlds that exist only as fleeting impulses driven down
a wire by the will of the people who don't exist.

Stay your axe Mister bill collector.. just for another day.. another round
of Hello.. how are you that's nice goodby TTYL and BRB. Don't AFK me
permanently with that handheld guillotine gleaming it's eagerness to chop
off my head.

I promise I will pay.. promise I will pay the toll to bring the bits to my
brain that make it sing in tune to the mad eclectic electric opera.

I promise I will pay to see the dots that dance dirvish patterns on
windows as I drive down streets that are paved with the mind patterns
of others who have come before me.

I promise I will pay.. just wait another day while I figure out a way to
stay the execution....

Why can't you delay while I find a way to pay? I promise a solution
to this dis-electrocution.

Back off Mister bill collector! Your murderous intent for my lack of
paying rent seems so unkind to my mind.. I'm not that far behind.

Here's your money chump.. now go.. and don't be so slow when I
complain about the clogged drain or the leaks when it rains.
