hambot

Feb 5, 1999, 4:06pm
I wrote a java program to do this back in the very very early hambot
builds. You created your point list via teleport bookmarks. The program
linearly interpreted points in between those, and made the hambot script.
It also would loop smoothly back to your original position. This works with
vertical movement too.

If there's a lot of demand for it, I will make it into an applet and put
it on my website.

Not always. Deer don't always run away. The young may be quite =
curious... and of course Mothers will be very protective.

I grew up in the country, and we had a deer we called "Nuisance" who =
was a friend of the family. She'd come around when the tomatos were =
still green and eat em off the vine, that's why we called her that. But =
the whole family would gather near when she made an appearance... and =
she'd come up to us on occasion.
Then for a while we didn't see her... a year or more passed. One day, =
she reappeared in the garden... but she wasn't eating. She waited until =
we all gathered around again, like old times, then she dashed over the =
fence and into the trees... only to reemerge with two youngins on her =
side. She had brought her kids to meet us... she beamed with motherly =
pride.

"Then we shot and et the lot of em" says Grampa Willerkins.

Yep this was something I sketched out nearly a year ago in anticipation of
the SDK. My plans are to integrate it with a whole landscape
generator/maintainer and weather system, however. If my time works out for
the better, I may be able to offer this as a service by the end of the
summer. Someone might beat me to it tho. :)
I do know what byte means about bots being boring... the concept of bots
as other avatars gets boring quite fast. Even though these bots are our
means of implementing everything in the SDK, that doesn't mean they're the
end-all of AW applications. They're just one step in a circle of tools that
enable user input--->browser response.

Okay...

1. I don't think anyone is thinking public building worlds. That would be
impractical for the most part. If it were the case, then it would be under
the strict control of the world owner.
2. It would be much faster to cover land using an sdk property building bot.
You could spread 100,000 walks a lot faster that way than the tree method...
because the trees would still be using a bot to do it. Eventually the tree
scenario would get to the maximum number of builds per minute... the walks
would reach it instantly.
3. Thanks to the sdk, deleting all of an individual's objects can now be a
much simpler task for world owners, which doesn't involve shutting down,
doing a propdump, etc.
4. The life cycle of a tree DOES include its death and decay. You already
came up with plenty of suggestions for how. :)

The solution to this would be to create the clouds under the citizen =
number of whoever owns the property.

[View Quote] I just thought of a cool programming problem to do with weather. =

Lets say that you want a cloudy day, not too many clouds but a =
few doted=20
around. It may be too much of an overhead to add clouds to every =
zone in=20
the world, especially a large world like Aw. You could come up =
with an=20
algorithm that worked out the optimum spread of cloud objects =
based on=20
the locations of the known avatars in the world. So you would =
only have=20
to add cloud objects to certain parts of the world. In most =
cases this=20
would be just around GZ but there would be an occasional =
smattering for=20
those adventurous souls that ventured into the green beyond.=20

I am not sure what the maximum visibility of an bot is but the =
cloud=20
bot, sorry Eep, must call it a bot, would have to station bots =
at a=20
number of locations around the world to ensure that everyone is =
seen.=20
Each cloud bot would maintain the same list of avatars in the =
world and=20
track each of their movements.=20

Wherever you go, the clouds will follow. Sounds like a sad =
ending to a=20
weather phenomenon.=20

Edward Sumerfield.

Nope, fraid not. Even with ED, in a registry world no two citizen =
numbers may overlap property! There are complicated reasons for this =
which, if I felt up to it right now, I'd boil down to their basic =
essences so everyone would understand. But I don't so I won't. :)

What you COULD do, however, is have the bot build under the citizen =
number of whoever owns the property. This gets more complicated for the =
bot code, but it is certainly possible. One additional issue is that =
the weather objects' registry sizes cannot overlap more than one =
citizens' property... another reason it would make most sense to use z =
objects for the weather and have them be 0 x and y dimensions in the =
registry.
One additional issue: I believe in this case you'd have to have the =
bot temporarily give special z object permission to the citizen under =
which the bot is building. This would only be for a few seconds at a =
time theoretically, but would be enough for a citizen who's watching or =
has an sdk application watching to build some z object stuff of his own.
