Aw SDK for VB..Its almost here!

Jan 12, 1999, 8:21am
The problem is probably that you need the aw.dll in the path too.
And if you experience crashes with the example greeterbot, then you've
probably got a different version of the aw.dll than AwSdkVB.dll was compiled
for. Currently, the VB sdk works with aw.dll build 10.

I need to know what the size of a world is in an SDK program. The =
only method I can think of involves attempting to build until we get an =
error. Is there a more elegant solution to this? It's going to be a =

I've just put up my conversion of Roland's (or is it Prot's?) SDK =
Example Program #2 (the dj bot) up for download. This demonstrates how =
the basics of how aw_query works. I've added a lot of comments besides =
what Roland already had.

It's available at:

Hope this is useful to some people!

PS: this is in VB6 project format... I have no idea if this can be =
loaded into VB5 or not. If not, then I'd be happy to work with someone =
with VB5 to offer a version for those users.

Okay, a couple news items on this:
a.. VB5 cannot load the project, but it can load the individual =
files and let you assemble them into a new project (there's one form and =
one module, no biggie)
b.. The current version of the VB-SDK has serious bugs in the query =
code that cause it to do very bizarre things. Sometimes it will work =
(in an otherwise empty world it does), sometimes it will lock up, =
sometimes it will change the midi a thousand times a minute. The good =
news on this is that Lucio (the Virtualy guy) is now working on the =
VB-SDK, and he will have an update for me tomorrow (Sunday)... cross =

Bots vs 'usual' Avatars

Of course it WOULD be possible to implement collision detection in an =
SDK program presently... if you write the collision detection yourself =
and have a local directory/cache of objects for it to scan. For very =
specialised applications you don't even need a generic collision =
detection algorithm... Giving it a small selection of =
collision-detecting models would work for the case of the ballbot =
bouncing off walls.
If you wanted to write a generic collision detection bot for world =
owners to use without requiring a local cache of models, you could even =
have it accept the object password and path manually for downloading =
models from the website.
In short, you can do whatever you want to that requires bot collision =
detection in your own worlds NOW... provided you can figure out how to =
code it. *grin*

world light source control

Roland has repeatedly said that light sources would slow things down =
immensely (similar to the warning he gave regarding avs in scene). =
However, I really don't see why we couldn't be given control over our =
one light source.

You can simulate having light sources by manipulating the surface =
lighting on objects. Use mostly or all ambient light, and then use high =
values for areas in light and low values for those in shadow. I did the =
CreepyCaves in aardvark using this method.

Unfortunately for having times of day, this would mean several =
versions of each object... a chore to make and extra downloads. :/

Nope not yet. This is a vital feature that we need to have in a =

make do with "patch" methods of creating bump teleport/warp panels =

Yep exactly. And if you were careful in your design of this you could =

Yep correct. I have someone else besides lucio working on it =
currently. There are some strange behaviours so he is taking longer =
than expected. This isn't surprising given the problems mrgrimm had =
originally.
Anyways, yes it is coming, no it won't be tomorrow, yes it might be in =

put up with a partial implementation of the sdk in vb. The most likely =
functionality we would lose in that case is query. I really don't want =

I consider the tonne of daily "It's pookie427's birthday Tuesday, =
everyone go to my special birthday spot and put a message there" via =
telegram to be spam. No offense. I just usually don't know 99% of the =
people that I'm telegrammed with birthday invitations to. :)
I suppose we'll need privacy features to turn off sdk originated =
telegrams. Unfortunately that may interfere with LEGITIMATE uses of sdk =
telegrams that don't involve mass spamming with bday notices.
Maybe a level of sophistocation at the uniserver could be effective =
here. If the universe server were able to determine by comparing =
content of subsequent sdk originating telegrams, then it could determine =
if the given telegram is a "mass message." Those with mass messages =
turned off (like icq's similar feature) would not get them.

Re: Witch?

One unfortunate note on this: only one animate command is effective per
object... So you can't go:

create animate tag=40 me tex 1 1 0, animate tag=50 me tex 2 1 0 2

That action will cause only the most recent animate to go through (only on
"tag 50" faces).

Yep it would be nice if IE and NS had that feature. I, for one, like html
for newsgroup postings, except when someone uses blinding white backgrounds
like that one.

Yep this has been an inconvenience for a very long time. Long before =

sense... as long as that click doesn't trigger the "activate" command.

Not for tourists specifically, but this has long been an issue. The =
fields only accept 256 characters max, and on complex worlds the limit =
is frequently encountered.
Personally I think the entire "rights" methodology needs rethinking. =
We need a way to manage rights that allows:
a.. Denying rights to specific citizens
b.. Easily seeing citizen names from the numbers
c.. Categorizing of groups that can be turned on or off (and this =
would be a way to incorporate denying rights)
d.. A checkbox for world entry that gives a choice in the chat =
window (like joining or file xfer) if a caretaker is online: "bob the =
janitor" wants to enter world aardvark. Will you let him?
The latter would allow specific persons in the world without having =
to actually add them to the permissions list (which is how the list gets =
unruly in the first place, for myself at least). It would also let =
specific tourists enter your world, which is useful for situations where =
a client or individual you need to see "for your eyes only" stuff but =
does not have a citizen.

Not true. It's not *implemented* in AW currently, but there is =
absolutely no reason it's impossible. Protagonist has discussed it on =
many occasions for the last few years... but what with a wishlist a mile =
long (and him "leaving" the team), there hasn't been time yet.
In the meantime Tina... what you *could* do is to implement an sdk bot =
that tracks avatar positions... And when your avatar comes in contact =
with a tourist's, it ejects him. :) Or if you want to be nicer, it =
could just send him a whisper saying "SPLAT!"
