As was said earlier, nothing is free. We are now paying for it.

Just as I was getting into it, my second child arrived, so my time here was limited to nil. Now, my third is on the way.. and it will be ages before I can sit down with tuts and do anything productive - by then - who knows what will or will not be around.

Best wishes everyone.

Perhaps Roman needs to remain tight lipped as he is still employed. Last I heard he was on the Virtual Earth project with a job title rather than any CEO. I don't hear that MS are scrapping Virtual Earth only the Caligari name, brand, community etc.

Sometimes you need to purge the old in order to make a fresh start. I am no lover of MS but I can see why they may need to do it.

As I already said, I have no idea why they let Caligari continue once they 'acquired' the code and talent. They clearly wanted to see how it fared in the hands of a community and perhaps what talent and examples etc. they could get.

That period is clearly over...time for them to move on I guess. We just need to do the same.

Anyone ever lost a job but then continued to go back every day and hammer on the door asking 'why?' for the next few years?

Didn't think so...

Instead of thinking llike trueSpace is dead, think instead of new applications
you can learn WITH trueSpace.
I agree; but if TrueSpace isn't going to have a home (where it can be freely downloaded) for much longer, then the new user base will not come to fruition...and it will slowly become an app used by a few. None of us like this, but this is the path Roman set us on when taking his creation to the doors of the M$ machine.

That may or may not be the case it's unclear what the future distribution situation is. I suspect that the download will still be available for some time after Friday.

The big question is whether or not it will get added to the Microsoft downloads so that it can be downloaded directly off the Microsoft website.

That would be a very wise decision Jack.

You know more than me Jack but I still suspect this will be archived and the rosetta code taken into a future browser plug in or similar.

I think that's pretty much the situation here already. Apps that even have the perception of having no future tend to have their userbases evaporate. Apps that definitely have no future......well.

I think the dream result from here on would be truespace becoming open source. I can't see it happening, but it would be very nice.

I agree with Transient. Even if the application is still available for download, the user base will atrophy a lot because of the announced ceasing of development.

Fortunately there aren't that many relatively easy to learn, free 3D content development software packages out there. And for game content creation trueSpace is still a very competent application.

Hopefully the beta can get released to the public, because it's much more polished and a lot nicer to work in than 7.6.

With many companies making bad decisions to drop products and staff

(I won't mention the Vista or Win7 fiasco in this forum) it is a shame to

have received the founder's letter.

Best wishes to the Caligari staff and all the creative people I have met

over the years. See you at the other forum.

Truespace is built on DIRECTX ( Microsoft ?? ) and has LIGHTWORKS Renderer ( Commercial Company ). These are proprietry items? And could not be used in an Open Source app? Maybe their is other stuff in there too?

Just a thought ..

Most of the proprietary licensed 3rd party stuff was removed before the 7.6 release. The Lightworks sections clearly would likely have to be removed, but other than that there's probably not much else that's licensed from a 3rd party.

I didn't think about lightworks. That would pretty much kill ts. Well, it still has an sdk........maybe it's finally time to learn c++.

OK Roman announce the end of Truespace. Why Microsoft did not make a formal letter? I do not like this attitude. MS does not respect its vicimes.

This would be the necessary first step for those working on development. Coding applications using DirectX is not an issue as the redistributable runtime is available to anyone running genuine windows and the sdk is available to anyone able to develop those applications. Given you must have VS 2005 or better to develop TS applications you will therefore have the ability, and support, to develop Directx applications.

The rendering technology available will be a big issue. The lightworks renderer would not/could not be included as source but the binary has been given away for free. Lightworks could as part of this process allow the "hooks" to be open sourced and continue giving away the free version of the binary. The coders could then build the bridges to newer versions of lightworks.

For TS to evolve in a positive manner I suspect that bridges and links to open source and proprietary products will be necessary. I for one like the results of a Lightworks render and continue to value it in producing my work.

If lightworks wish to withdraw the current renderer that should be able to be accommodated quite quickly as well. I have no problem trying to reach an agreement with them at a later date, if necessary, to the standalone version of Lightworks.

Hi all,

The forums have no set closing date. This is why the announcement doesn't give one, for most things there is no set date. One of the few things that has a set date is the termination of my contract, which is tomorrow, but for the rest, the date is not fixed.

This is why the announcement just says "take action *in case* things disappear". however, they could be around for some time. Or not. There is no way to say at present.

There is currently no plan for someone to push a button and close the forums tomorrow. So I wouldn't necessarily expect to see them disappear tomorrow, just keep in mind that they *might*, to give yourself time to prepare. The could remain around for months, who can say?

People could meet up tonight in Shared Space using the TNL! link if they like, it should still be up and running. Not sure if I'll be able to make it, I will drop by if I can as a final TNL! visit (depends on whatever is happening).

And also the announcement from Roman is the official letter. Remember, Roman is Microsoft (as am I), so any word from us, is official word from MS. Naturally rather than having some stranger from Microsoft drop by to tell you this news, it was decided it was best being reported to you all by the team you have come to know and love (or like a little bit at least, I hope ;) ). It is better the official word come from Roman than someone you've never seen before, and that was the thinking there. As ever Roman, myself, and the rest of the Caligari team are the official MS spokespersons here :)

HTH!

Let's hope there is a way to replicate the site ....

Any word on how much disk is needed for us to download the site locally?

Haha, well I certainly won't be saying it after tomorrow, in reference to me in any case :)

Thank you for the kind words. It has been my pleasure to help and assist everyone in the community as best as I can, and rewarding to hear that I managed to do well. Or in this one case at least ;)

Certainly for the next 48 hours I'll still be seeing what information we can get out, as regards any new firm dates for one thing and another. It's always my intent to get concrete information out to our users, but it might just not be possible. Anything that does get more detail or firms up a bit more on when things will happen, I'll be sure to let you know about.

Thanks,

Tom

Is forum close from any post like old forum, or both forums disappear forever
