NOT AGAIN!!!

I spent about 5 years learning a 3d program on the amiga, followed it to the pc and then it died. Spent another couple of years messing around with it and other programs while looking for a replacement and eventually settled on trueSpace. Now it's doing the same thing. It seems to have taken me a lot longer to get to grips with tS - not sure I have enough room in my brain to learn another program. Think I'll just revert to being a painter again instead!

I got Carrara Pro 6 on special last year - maybe I'll spend more time with that.

Perhaps I'll just stick with tS and keep working with it - after all I've still got a lot to learn about it........

Sad day. :(

Indeed it is not. I still use a program called Alias Upfront which was the inspiration for SketchUp. However, with no development on it, it does look very basic and archaic now.

Depsite all the good intentions I wonder how many of us will still be able to realise our visions in 10 years time with 10 year old software....

Sad news indeed, as I always thought it had potential to become a solid tool. But somehow I knew it was coming, considering the course of events and all the silence around tS from behalf of Caligari. Anyway, good luck to the Caligari Team and thanks for your efforts, tS was an important step for me to improve my skills and I had a lot of fun over the years.

And don´t forget...there´s plenty more fish in the sea, and those who want to use tS for a bit longer there´s nothing that could stop them from doing so. Changes are necessary sometimes, although they may hurt at the beginning.

The problem i not an archaic look in 10 years but the problem of compatibility with hardware and software. Imagines a new directx, realtime from gpu and impossibility to import export new standards.

:mad:Someone noted the plate of the truck that hit at once all users? It is how I feel ... without floor ... without updates, Truespace be outdated soon! For those who did not like the program will be a party ... I thank all the friends I met here for the camaraderie, commitment and solidarity! Never seen a forum like that and maybe never will. Today is a day of sadness for me.

Here's a tip: Never sell your dream to Microsoft ... because this message appears "You execute an illegal operation and this program will be closed"

This is so sad. I've been worried ever since it went MS free. Nothing's free.

Where did we get the 7.6 update from? I just checked my downloads available as the newsletter suggested and my last program update is for 7.51. Curious that.

Sorry but 7.61 is the BETA that hasn't been released.
At least we would get the latest version before the lights go out.

I said 7.6 not 7.61. However, I get to answer my own query - the link seems to be via the caligari home page on the lefthand side below the gallery and trueplace links.

Its sad to see it end this way. I know how it might feel for the people involved. I recently lost my position at my job because of company cut backs.

I do hope this community survives all of this. This community is by far the best thing about trueSpace.

This is definitely a serious bummer....I've only had TS for a couple of months, I'm very sorry for those who have been here much longer than me. I've asked many questions here, and I always got full detailed answers and generous help from everyone. This community forum rocks! It's the best I've ever belonged to. Sad to see it have to end here. :(Many thanks to everyone for taking time to help others, and for making this an enjoyable learning experience for all involved. All the best to all of you & looking forward to meeting up with everyone again, hopefully there will be another TS forum started somewhere!

Best Regards,

Paul

Thanks Steinie, I sent Prodigy an email to the first one (his personal) earlier today, but didn't get a url, just a reply to the email.

Edit: Too bad they couldn't continue to make all the tutorial courses available, there's alot to download in such little amount of time.

Now regarding tS code, of course, we all should pray for MS to decide to release it as open source, so the story could go on. This is a unique chance to make a Blender-killer

I will second this, times infinity. :)

I would like to know is if it's now okay to redistribute 7.6 ourselves. This, at least, would give the remaining hard-core users something to work with in the future. Many of my favourite aspects of truespace are from five years ago (or more). There's still a lot of life left with this program, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I always check this forum first thing in the morning, but this is a devastating way to start the day :(

I have fond memories of this forum and learned a lot from all of you, so much fun.

I hope we can continue in some form.

Seconded.... I do the same when I get to work, not what I expected this morning...

Things aren't going well in my business either and I could be out of work soon too but I'd hoped for better for tS.

It would be great to see the contents of the forum preserved somehow - it would be useful if Caligari could host it for a while longer to give folks time to set something up or 'take ownership' of all the info as there's an enormous amount of useful reference material here. Would be very difficult for us to back up on a small scale. Or maybe they could confirm how long the forum will stay up if it

Would also like to see all the video courses hosted somewhere - I've downloaded some but not all.

I'll be sticking with tS anyway for the forseeable future as I'm only a hobbyist and am happy enough with what I can get out of it (mostly). I've a lot of history with it (and no time to learn something new).

So hope I see you around on the 'other side'....

Well, I suspect Rosetta will not be scrapped. Perhaps this is just a way of getting rid of all things Caligari/trueSpace related.

A promise has indeed been broken there (that Caligari would continue as it was etc.) but I doubt Microsoft will scrap the technology it has.

Expect to see a 3D web browser soon with a sense of deja vu but no obvious signs of the tS UI in there....;)

Well Splinters I think you get the prize because you called it!
That said you knew this was coming, Truespace always WAS one jump behind the mainstream markets no matter what, the aquisition of microsoft showed the signs, the lack of updates and general hush hush. Being on unsupported software leaves you two choices: Change program, or make do otherwise. I have a feeling the members of this forum will most likely make this software community supported.

As for me well, when the time comes to use another I'll need to look into it, but at the moment I stick with it, I still use deviantart and update there regularly enough

And if you require my email feel free to PM me or check my userpage

Indeed, truespace is still fine for me...unless they somehow wrote a bomb in there to delete all my tS files this Friday, I will be OK for a few years yet.

As many others have said, this is sad but not surprising. Without quite realizing it, I had transitioned from "waiting for the update" mode to "well, I guess it's never coming" mode a few months ago. (It was around then that I went from taking a prolonged break from 3D, as I waited for fixes to the various issues I couldn't get past with tS, to starting to play with Blender again.)

On a slightly brighter note, I mentioned last year that although it was unfortunate that Roman needed to find a buyer for the company, I was glad that he had managed to do so, given the horribly problematic economic situation. I presume that the Microsoft buy-out at least kept him from having nothing to show, financially, for all the years of running Caligari. So I guess that overall, I find this situation less sad than if he had just had to close up shop then, at a point when he was totally in the red, with creditors banging on his doors, etc. My best wishes go to him and all the Caligari crew, of course, as they each go forward with whatever life has to offer.

On another note, I would like to suggest that those who are so inclined definitely do take an honest, open-minded look at the open-source Blender application, as an adjunct to tS for as long as they choose to keep using the latter, and as a potential direction to shift their focus if and when they decide they need to do so. It really is amazingly powerful and -- very importantly -- surprisingly usable, after a short learning curve. (Many people seem to belittle its use of shortcut keys, but almost every command can also be accessed through other means, including menus. ...And to my surprise, I found that the shortcut keys were actually to my liking, after all.)

My sincere thanks to Roman and all the Caligari crew -- back from the days of Bibiana up through today -- for producing trueSpace, which enabled me to get into 3D graphics as a hobby years ago, and enjoy it as an immensely rewarding one for many years since. My thanks also to all the plugin and script developers, and everyone who took the time on these forums (and the old trueSpace mailing list -- remember that?) to offer helpful explanations of how things work. Take care.
