you guys are looking at what can 3.2 offer me. well you are probly not going
to like what im about to say but activeworlds was not made just for you.
this program was made for everyone who uses it. where as 3.0-1 where made to
provide you with neat effects and little quirks to make useing aw easier 3.2
is about stepping out into new systems. for those useing nt it can be touch
when programs dont work with them. awcom is moving in the direction to
provide this service and need i say service. they are not twisting your arm
to use this so dont complaign. and when i say service they want to provide
to the largest user base. also 3.2 bring those who dont have 3d cards into
the features of 3.0 and 3.1 so are you going to say that these people arent
paying users of activeworlds. well as a 2.2 user i think you need to
understand that us 2.2 users are customers also and we need to be included.
you guys have gotten two new browsers so far. you guys have gotten them fast
also. so dont complaign what will 3.2 do for me. understand what will 3.2 do
for others. you cant make everyone happy all of the time and now aw is
taking time to open everything that aw has to offer to a wider larger
userbase.

This a quote from a TechTalk held on 05/18/01:

"Roland: well software mode is looking unlikely for 3.2 at this point
since Criterion still has not delievered anything :("

In case you didn't know, Roland is Active Worlds' lead programmer. So,
unless Criterion gets their act together (and soon), I doubt there will
be software rendering in AW 3.2 (which is unfortunate).

Yes it is, very unfortunate, I really wish 2.2 users could be brought up to
speed and coryashire is absolutely right, 2.2 users have been left out in
alot of ways because of all the upgrades for people with better hardware. I
hope it happens soon if not now with 3.2. 2.2 customers pay too. Alot of
them have been here from AW's beginning and still have no hardware to
support the 3.0 and 3.1 browsers. Not everyone is made out of money to go
and upgrade everything either. It's is a big exspense for people on tight
budgets.

If you're talking about my rant, allow me to reply.

Never once did I complain that 3.2 won't do anything for me. Nor did I
claim that the features that were being implemented shouldn't be. I
whole-heartedly agree that AWCom needs to be accessible to the widest
range of users possible.

What irks me is their use of the phrase "corporate environment", which
indicates to me that they aren't doing this for us, the citizens.
They're doing this so that corporate sponsors can more easily use the
software. It's not their actions that disturb me, but their motives. If
they're going to pay more attention to corporate sponsors that don't
exist yet than us, how are we supposed to get any customer "service"?

It would seem that the main cause of 2.2 use is lack of 3d hardware. Even in the "corperate sites", NT4 is becoming an endangered
species. However, these corperate sites oftentimes have lame onboard video or non-3d video. Lose the NT4 support, it will hold AW
back, and FRICKIN LOSE RENDERWARE.

Unfortunately this is happening for all software I know, technology is
improving fast in the computer field and users should be aware of it, on
the other hand it would be a pity to not implement because of some
people are still running a Pentium. I am not sure this is an easy task
for programmers and engineers. As far as AW is concerned I can see they
allow a wide range of users despite many others companies, they can give
you 2 different browsers depending on your hardware and the next 3.2
will also run on Win NT 4.0. Of course this is a problem for world
owners because they will never know who may drop in, I can say I have
built for AW3.1 and I am very sorry for who's still on 2.2, but I left
some old commands that could have been simply replaced with better ones
in the 3.1, I think I've made my decision...

this is not about your rant on 3.2 but the community in generals outlook on
those that use 2.2 , i can tell you that alot of features added to 3.0 and
3.1 have nothing to do with graphics cards. roland should look into creating
a 2.3 with all the lighting and move and build features added to the last
two betas. i dont know if lighting came with just renderware3.0 but there
are many features such as chat screen mute and the new world features that
we shouldnt be left out of. there are ways to bring us up to par but we have
been held back and treat poorly as citizens by the rest of the community. i
am just getting sick of useing a browser that was written in 1999. i remeber
being beta for 2.2 but alot of people where anyways but for me it has been
two years almost sence i have seen change. i have tried to get roland to
under stand that to but he and awcom seem more interested in putting a fork
in the road and only working on one path. it is time for a upgrade for us
to.

I'm with ya there. Drop the parser and move code into 2.2 and at least update the 2.2 parser to ignore the 3.1 commands and work
with the texture command. Lighting is a 3.0 thing, so just have it ignore lighting code, and allow 2.2 to change the lighting, fog,
etc. settings for the world although they will be unable to see it.

3D without hardware is just pathetic. The industry is maturing; end-users must too or they will simply fall into obsoletion. "Upgrade or die." Welcome to the wonderful world of computing.

Also, I hate to say it, but Voodoo 5 cards are DIRT cheap. I am in no way condoning the purchase of those shit slot fillers, and
GeForce II MX cards are becoming just about as cheap.

So upgrade your pathetic computer system with at least a 2-year-old 3D card (a 3Dfx Voodoo 3 will suffice) and you'll be able to run AW3 fine. Quit acting so helpless. If you can't stand the heat of the "computerized kitchen", get the fuck out of it.
