Heh, I just heard AWCI is going to declare bankruptcy within the month.
Probly unfounded but gives us a ray of hope of new management

Either that, or aw will be shut down for good :-(....

Where did you hear this? If it's true, maybe someone can convince
management to GPL the code before they file for bankruptcy.

They cant GPL browser source; it uses RenderWare and Criterion won't let
them do it like that unless they take out the RW stuff.

Are you sure this is true? I know you have to have a license to use the
RenderWare API, but would it constitute a violation if the RenderWare files
were removed? If this were so, one could work on such source only by
purchasing a license for the API. (Otherwise, no compile; the relevant
RenderWare .h & .cpp files would be missing.) Much of the code is not
dedicated to rendering anyway; I'd think something in there could be useful.
If worse came to worse the engine could be replaced...
In any case, this is no small project; I just would hate to see the
software go entirely to waste. It's also worthwhile to keep in mind that
all this is just a rumor.

In that case why would they tell anyone? It hurts there business even more,
because if word got out no one new would registerer. Then again most
tourists don't know what the hell is going on.

And where'd you hear this bit of controversy? From a tourist? Yes, AWCOM
stocks have been far from perfect, but even this is sorta hard to believe.
Although I'd like to say it is impossible, I doubt it isn't.

I seriously doubt the validity of such a rumor. First, if AW was
going to declare bankruptcy, why wouldn't it do so while it was
incurring huge losses, as AW did in its early days? Now, AW has been
turning profits in most quarters. Also, why would AW make deals with
large corporations (caligari, nettaxi.com) just a month before the
declaration? I doubt that if AW was having financial trouble they
would have to shut down immediately. Finally, AW seems to have more
people visiting the universe than ever - there was a while last year
when people seemed to be avoiding the universe, but now AW reaches
near 750 people on Sunday nights (the busiest night of the week,
apparently). I remember that even during the Cy Awards on September
30, 2000, there were only about 525 people logged in at once. That's
a huge gain.

[View Quote] There was an ISP here. They seemed to do quite well. Then, one week, they
got two to three months of payment from everybody, where they normally got
only one or two months. This seemed ok - it was payment time, and they had
changed a few things in their subscriptions in the month before.

One week later, they were bankrupt.

Nobody had seen it coming, and everybody had paid about $50 to $75 for those
3 months - or actually that week - of access. Legally, it was completely ok
what they did. Fortunately, most people (including me) paid automatically -
and you can reverse such a payment up to a month after it is processed.
Which a lot of people did. Still, they got a lot of money from the people
who didn't knew they could reverse it. And if they had waited for a month,
they would have had about 2 months of money without providing service.

And this is not unique.

So, indeed - if they are really almost broke, it's in their best interest to
tell nobody about it, get money from a bunch of new subscriptions/renewals,
and use that money to pay the companies they owe money to, which would
otherwise sue them to death.

Reunion has nothing to do with them, and if software companies are going down (or anyone
really) they try to maintain appearances til the end anyway...

You don't hafta buy it to run the servers. You can just download the Linux
serv from www.tribesplayers.com (I believe that's the URL but I may be
mistaken)
