A Little Of Course (General Discussion)
A Little Of Course // General Discussionanduin lotharioDec 19, 2001, 7:18pm
I thought I just HAD to post this one, got me laughing enough, plus the
newsgroups need some lightening up eh? This is the actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. Radio conversation released by the chief of naval operations, 10-10-95. CANADIANS: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision. AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision. CANADIANS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision. AMERICANS: This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. CANADIANS: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course. AMERICANS: This is the Aircraft Carrier US LINCOLN, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic Fleet. We are accompanied with three Destroyers, three Cruisers and numerous support vessels. I DEMAND that you change your course 15 degrees north. I say again, that's one-five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship. CANADIANS: This is a lighthouse. Your call. -- _________________________________________ Anduin Lothario ICQ#:17962714 SMS: (Send an SMS message to my ICQ): +278314217962714 More ways to contact me: http://wwp.icq.com/17962714 http://www.anduin-lothario.com _________________________________________ wing.Dec 19, 2001, 7:54pm
1) The USS Lincoln isn't an aircraft carrier and sure as hell isn't the
second largest boat we got 2) Aircraft carriers are deep water vessels, the likelihood that they come anywhere near a lighthouse anywhere except Norfolk on the Atlantic coast would seem to be slim to none. [View Quote] shred no@1.invalidDec 19, 2001, 8:09pm

3) Jokes do not necessarily have to be factual in every detail.

That joke's changed hands so many times, that this version is probably
completely different from the original (if it ever even occurred in the first place). Last I heard, it was a battleship, not a aircraft carrier, and it was off Vancouver. :P [View Quote] > 1) The USS Lincoln isn't an aircraft carrier and sure as hell isn't the > second largest boat we got > 2) Aircraft carriers are deep water vessels, the likelihood that they come > anywhere near a lighthouse anywhere except Norfolk on the Atlantic coast > would seem to be slim to none. It most certainly is - USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)
>and sure as hell isn't the second largest boat we got It most certainly is - the only US Naval ship that outclasses her by gross tonnage is the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-75.) Just for trivia, USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the longest US warship. Have a look at the pointy end sometime, and see the little ramp that comes off one of the bow catapults. She's about 11 feet longer than the Lincoln. > 2) Aircraft carriers are deep water vessels, the likelihood that they come > anywhere near a lighthouse anywhere except Norfolk on the Atlantic coast > would seem to be slim to none. You'd be surprised ;-) Having said all that, this story *is* a really, really old urban legend. However, the story of "Old Abe" interrupting the America's Cup race in San Diego a few years ago is absolutely true! http://www.cnn.com/EVENTS/year_in_review/sports/feb.html Have a look at 4 February :-) [View Quote] dabartenderDec 19, 2001, 8:20pm
And sorry, wing, that post wasn't meant to sound as butt-hole-ish as it came
out ;-) wing.Dec 19, 2001, 9:30pm
Hrmm, it would seem my database was wrong. *spanks USN.dat*
Oh well, at least I'm not gonna lose points on that evil paper I'm doing for social studies on facts and statistics about the US armed forces now. [View Quote] wing.Dec 19, 2001, 9:32pm

4) The joke was intended to "lighten up" the NGs, I couldn't resist the
oppertunity to slaughter it. dabartenderDec 19, 2001, 9:36pm
If you have any questions I can help you with, gimme a shout!
(admin at hooverae.com.) I'll be happy to answer anything I actually know the answer to LOL :D If you haven't seen any of my posts about it in the past, I'm active duty Navy, and have a pretty solid perspective on the way things are right now ;-) [View Quote] sw chrisDec 20, 2001, 3:30am
Now wait a minute... what about Old Abe and the America's Cup? There's got
to be video or at least a story of this somewhere, because I gotta see it. :) SW Chris [View Quote] dabartenderDec 21, 2001, 4:08am
The only link I've been able to dig up for it is that one from CNN
sports...but on February 4th, 1995, the Lincoln was coming back to San Diego after a training cruise. Around or about San Clemente Island, due to a heavy fog, they steamed right through the middle of the America's Cup race course, causing the race to be postponed for a bit while they passed through. It was all over the news out here when it happened, but strangely, it's hard to find any references to it now. Probably one of those embarrassing moments that the Navy wants to put behind 'em ;-) [View Quote] dabartenderDec 21, 2001, 4:12am
