3.3 features

Nov 23, 2001, 11:31pm
Taken from tonight's tech-talk. It should be noted that Roland was offline
through the entirety of this.

Roland: the feature list for 3.3 is getting kinda scary and long...
Roland: ok, 3.3 features then
Roland: so far, we have:

Roland: * contact list improvements, including custom privacy settings per
contact and the ability to hide online/offline status, block telegrams and
go into "AFK" mode

Roland: * slide detection - meaning, if you hit a wall you slide along it
instead of stopping cold

Roland: * DirectX8 support...which brings a big performance
improvement...about 30 to 50% frame rate increase on older cards, up to 100%
frame rate increase on new cards like the Geforce

Roland: ok, that's stuff that's already been done, more or less

Roland: * skinned avatars

Roland: * terrain

Roland: * ability to rotate objects in all 3 directions (but not in worlds
with registries)

me some new hope... perhaps in 3.4/4.0 they will include new security
features.

<snip>

The AMD Palomino/Thunderbird cores generally outperform the P4/P3 series
from Intel. Both processors have their advantages, such as P4's heat-death
protection (CPU lowers its own clockspeed according to temps) and Athlon's
lack-thereof.

Processor: AMD AthlonXP series (1500+ is currently the best bang/buck)
Motherboard: (KT266A) ASUS A7V266-E or the Soltek SL-75DRV2
Graphics: Either the nVidia GeForce Ti 500 or the ATi Radeon 8500 (with some
driver fixes it could beat the GF3 TI 500)
Memory: Some nice CL2 PC2100 DDR SDRAM

Serious cooling will be in order, as well :)

You could:
A) Use a traditional HSF setup
B) Assemble a liquid cooling system
C) Buy a pre-assembled liquid cooling case, such as the Koolance rig
(www.koolance.com)

For you Intel nuts who may start attacking me, I ask you to read some
benchmarks :)

VROOM VROOM! The fastest....

Dec 17, 2001, 11:06am
[View Quote] That's not entirely correct. VIA actually manufactures a .13 micron die chip
which runs with no cooling at 866MHz.

Also, AMD Thunderbird/Palomino cores produce a lot more heat than any of the
Pentium series. The Athlon can die of a heat death in around half a second
if the heatsink falls off (which is not too uncommon, actually).

The Age of AW

Dec 19, 2001, 8:50pm
[View Quote] I've never seen adults anyone as an "old fogie". What exactly *is* a fogie,
anyways?

I disagree - differences are what *make* the community. Why change?

I'm not social or ambitious enough to run any kind of organization or town,
in reality (tried - failed). I do my best work just building somewhere off
by myself. Again, these kinds of differences are what makes the community
interesting.

And you would? Some people just have other things to do (note: not better,
*other*) than devote much of their time to such a project. That doesn't mean
that they don't fully support their words. Try to remember that this is not
the real world we're talking about.

I find conversation with adults *much* more apealing than conversations with
my age group, and, on a whole, the adult community does look down upon the
younger generation. An ancient prejudice, but it's going nowhere fast.

I agree. The negativity between both groups is astounding - that needs to
change.

People seem to subconciously look for differences, no matter what. I doubt
that the narrow-mindedness will cease.
