Immigration Officer: Alphaworld will be down for maintenance until February
3, 2006, Welcome to Alphaworld, the oldest and largest virtual world in the
Cyberverse.
When will Alphaworld be back UP?????
Feb 10, 2006, 1:28am
I'm thinking this might have something to do with the fact that AWI is now
looking for someone to hire as the System Administrator / Tech Support.
Oddly enough, the day before the Jobs page was updated to announce a two
position to be opened for hiring, the welcome message was updated to the one
you quoted (except that it was still mentioning Janurary newsletter until at
least few days of Feburary passed before that particular part was finally
updated) and Alphaworld suddenly became a private world (closed) and it
remained for a period of at least few hours, give or take, and it suddenly
went back up on the same day!
Apparently it did not remained down until the date stated in that statement
you quoted from! Then the next day, I suddenly saw that they are hiring and
coincidentally enough one of the position appeared to be related to
"maintainence" and that is system administrator / tech support. I find it
odd. I smells something fishy here...
Oh, and no words from AWI on why this part of the announcement was left
in.... :O

Actually, you can opt to work for them from home. See
http://www.shamusyoung.com/aboutus/ for evidence of that. ;)
That page mentioned Shamus Young as work-at-home programmer for Activeworlds
Inc. This isn't first time I learned about that. Hamfon, or whoever it was
at the time after the end of a Tech Talk meeting (don't think it was part of
transcript... I think Mauz, who was transcripting the meeting, left before
that conversation after the meeting concluded), told me that he actually
worked at home when I mentioned my concern about moving to Massachusetts
office (at this time, I was considering a future possible career in
Activeworlds Inc. but later reverted to my original career goal of becoming
an urban planner, only to later also consider becoming an architect or
perhaps a history teacher at high school with respect to the infamous quote,
"Don't put all eggs in one basket.).
Anyway, my impression is that certain positions, possibly those in
accounting and etc., requires moving to Newburyport area to work in AWI
office, while other positions, most notably programming thanks to advent of
Internet enabling the exchanges and communications in relation to work,
allows those to remain at their home and do the work from there.
However, I think it's obvious even those positions does not mean you can
always do work all the time from home. For example, certain events or
situation may require travel.. for instance... I have seen pictures of
certain AWI employees being at certain events... I have seen those pictures
at swcity.net forum. I don't have url address to that thread right away so
you'll have to find them yourself but anyway those such jobs with respect to
working from home is really intriguing, considering that humans have spent
millennias working at workplace. You can bet that this is just a beginning
of a major change and transformation of our human society and civilization
on a scale far greater than those of Industrial Revolution and Neolithic
Revolution. After all, 21st century is the century of the future, a gateway
to a brave new world set in the future. O_O

That's what "inhouse" stands for under that job description... it means
that you are required to work from the office if you apply for that
specific job.
