Here is an early render of the keypad area. This was mainly done to check if the sunken area for the top keys and the bevel applied to the keypads were sufficient or whether they needed to be made more prominent.

As always, any comments/critique most welcome.

Excellent work.

It is looking fantastic. I really like how it looks through the clear key pad.

Can't wait to see it all come together in a full render.

Thanks very much Mike. I'm going to experiment some more with some different material shaders and perhaps just twig the keypads a touch so their a little bit lighter. Model wise, I'd still like to attempt to correct the Samsung logo but there may be a big knock-on effect if i start tampering too much. Apart from that it's pretty much done.

Despite the fact I have been working on my Matrix Phone for months now, I still find myself unable to put the project to bed (and to think this started life as a 2 hour SMC model :D). And that's mainly because I'm still looking for a killer/competition worthy render that I think the model deserves. Things have not been helped by the fact that due to the nature of the model, I have been torn between a high quality product shot with a minimal/non-distracting background; like the imagery you would expect to see in the latest adverts for Ericsson or Nokia. Or, as my latest test renders below show, an in-film type image where upon the phone has been dropped on the floor because of say a fight sequence.

Any thoughts all?

Personally I would prefer something with context rather than just a blank/non-distracting background like and advert would be.

Thanks robert. That's why I arranged for a Sentinal to be caught in the second phone's reflection, though it hasn't come out too well.

Absolutely incredible stuff Breech Block.

Thanks tanhoak, much appreciated. Unfortunately, I think its still going to require quite a bit more work to get it just right.

As an exercise in trying to get to grips with HDRI a lot more, I thought I would try and make a couple of product/glamour shots of my Matrix Phone. The thing I learnt the most is that a few slight changes to the various settings and/or rotation of your scene can have a huge and dramatic difference on the final render. As an added bonus, I also discovered why all my test renderings have been really poor lately with loads of jagged edges despite 4xAA and a resolution of 1920x1200 - I have been accidentally been rendering to my screen size and not my window size. Doh! :o

Anyhow's, here are the pics and as always any C & C most welcome.

See, this is why I can't do object modeling like this.... Not only can I not model detail like this but I don't have the presentation skills either. I think even if there were flaws in the model the presentation alone would be enough to draw interest in the product. Looks great.

Forgive the slow response tahnoak, but it actually took me some time to figure out how best to respond to your last comment. Well, first of all I'm glad you like the piccies. Although I have been using truespace for a couple of years now, I'm really only interested in the animation side with most of the stuff in my movies downloaded from the net. The Matrix Phone was my first real modelling project and even that was accidental as I kinda stumbled into it when I couldn't get it finished in time for the Iconic Movie Prop SMC.

I must admit, I find it strange that you say “I can't do object modelling like this....” because if you examine this thread and study the wireframes, there is really nothing complicated about it. There is no organic modelling as such, just loads of square'ish shapes joined together and filleted/bevelled as needed. The only thing I have done, is gone into a level of detail that some may think a bit insane. But even so, that is just a case of getting the basic shape right and then layering more and more detail on. If you look at my very first few SMC entries, you will see all my early efforts are really basic in their construction and this project started out in a very similar fashion.

I would say that just about anyone could knock out a model similar to this, the only things you really need are: time, patience and a bit of self-confidence.

Breech...understand what you are saying; but when it comes to the kind of 3D work that you do, I just do not have all the patience that I should to be able to produce that kind of work. :(

I think I am getting to the point where I have some talent and self confidence but just not the patience. Maybe once the kiddo's are "all growed up" I won't feel guilty about spending so much time on this and can focus more on detail. Right now I would much rather spend 4 hours trying to figure out why my lighting stinks in a not overly difficult scene instead of putting together a very detailed model :)

Well, there aren't half as many modellers in TS who do the type of scenes you do constantly, and yours already look good, contradictory to what you say your lighting skills are better than a lot, especially in this type of scene and thats half the reason why yours get the good feedback.

Being specific first and getting what you know and like down to a tee makes spanning out easier

I don't think I actually commented on your phone breech, shows I pay attention
I think everyone's already said what I think of it, stunning, I'm always amazed you can pour over the details like this, and that first beauty render of yours is the best for me

Nice work

Thanks Weevil, if the scene does look good it is because I spent those 4 hours redoing all the lights and rendering and rendering and rendering and.....

Yeah...that happens a lot (too often in my opinon, can rarely get a scene spot on first few times round), what i do is use the Post process window, takes less time because you can make it smaller, and then the area render box for details, speeds things up

Slightly

Gosh sorry guys - got so many threads going here I can't keep track of them all.:o

If your really keen to do something different, ie a highly detailed model, then here are a couple of soloutions: choose a deliberate long term project, something you would be happy to dabble away at one weekend a month. Or, get involved in a joint project with someone else so your still getting down to the nitty gritty detail but shareing the workload.

Thanks very much, Weevil. Much appreciated. I'm going to tweak one of the 4 scenes I have recently done; just to try and improve on the light quality and some of the reflections and then perhaps send it in to the Lightworks competition and see how it gets on. It would be interesting to see how it would fare outside of this forum. Just need to pick a scene now. Mmmm.

LOL- thanks tahnoak. Actually, I was in the middle of replying and agreeing with your comment yesterday, when I got called away and hence my delayed response. However, rather bizarrely, recent events have changed my response.

Last night, I received an e-mail from the good folk over at LightWorks saying that my matrix phone image had been short listed in their Q4 Image Competition. Worryingly, whilst rendering out a super high definition image for the next stage, all I could do was see all the errors and flaws in my work. The fact an expert panel will soon be pawing over every detail is really quite frightening.

So, for two differing reasons, this really does bring this project to a close. One, because no matter how my image finally fares in the competition, the mere fact it was deemed worthy of being short listed is more than I could have ever of possibly hoped for when I started this project. And two, the foundations of the model were put down almost 6 months ago now and I feel that my skill level has progressed since then. I have finally realised that no amount of tweaking will make this project any better and as such, its time to move on to something else.

On a more personal note, a big, big thank you to all the forum members who gave me advice and encouragement during this project. Your comments kept me going when the going got tough. Many thanks.

That's good news Breech! I won't say I'm surprised, because it was a quality piece of work and certainly deserving of accolades and of being used to promote the render engine in question etc. So it's not really surprising to hear :) But it is pleasing!

Let us know how it goes with the next steps, good luck with those - I hope we'll be seeing your image on the Lightworks site soon!

@ Steinie - Hey nice to see you recognized outside our inner breeding site.

lol - Steinie, you have an undeniable talent for making comments that are funny, and yet at the same time, hit the nail directly on the head. Yep, for some strange reason, I really felt I needed to stick my head above the parapet on this one.

Thanks Tom. I'm not getting my hopes up, but I can't help thinking it would be really cool for a trueSpace image to win it 2 times on the trot.

Thanks Kena. By the way, this is the image I finally decided to go with. My thought process was that the 2 images I rendered previously featuring a trio of phones, whilst great at showing every aspect of the model, made use of a background plate and as such did not show the LightWorks render engine at its full potential. So I turned my attention back to the image of the phone lying on the floor/deckplate. However, whilst this image was fully rendered, the floor occupied a large percentage of the shot and again did not really show the render engine at its full potential. I then came up with the idea of the spent ammunition cases which added some much needed colour and some cracking metallic/reflective surfaces. Finally, I hit upon the idea of changing the image on the phone's display screen to try and add some kind of intrigue/story element.

In addition, I did play about with having a tendril of smoke drifting up from one of the brass casings but just couldn't achieve the level of quality needed.

Strangely, the image looks a lot darker when you make it smalller. Unless that's just my monitor. Anyhows, hope you likes.

I might just be really critical here, I can't help but think the bullets aren't quite as attached to the scene as maybe the phone is...I'm not sure what it is

Aside from that its a stunning image, nice work breech

Yeah, I kind of noticed that too. The shells look like pistol rounds, if maybe you put some bigger casings, like from machine guns or something, to add a bit of variety that could be beneficial.

Just my opinion though, whether or not you do it is your choice. ;)

I think I've got it..they kind of reflect the light differently, not sure you could muc habout that except darken them a bit in post process, Truespace has a nasty habit of doing that sometimes (that knife in my corridor scene for example...ooooh the fun days)
