...Haha, and I'd thought I'd gotten away with it. Still, all the elements could be there because they are all part of a training simulation. Get out of that one! :D

Good call! ;)

Well, this is me attempting to put in some cordite trails coming out of the spent cases. I've just done the one for now. This is achieved in-scene and not post. Not entirely sure if it works and how it would look coming off another casing. Might have to try and do it with a particle emitter. What are your thoughts?

It could work.

I mean it looks like it lacks volume (because it does) and it somehow doesn't seem to be lit right, but you couldn't do better with particles, I don't think.
That's one thing tS is missing, voxel shaders.

Do you have pyrocluster? If you do maybe you could do it with that.

Oh and is the send button plastic missing? I don't see it, first time I noticed.

hmm, does look like there's a button missing, just left of the navigation key, but could be a weird transparency/angle thing?

the idea of the cordite trail is interesting but to my mind it's a bit over-powerful - if you really toned it back to being barely visible it might works as much more subtle effect; lack of volume may then not matter too much either.

As a favour - is there any chance you could share a few of your shader settings? Rather than doing lots of screen caps, posting a simple scene using cubes 'painted' in the same materials would allow us (me!) to look at your material composition... I'm still struglling to get nice materials with HDRI; it would be useful to know which HDRI file you used too if possible.

Cheers mate...

Thanks again robert and Nez, it would seem that I can always rely on you two for some precise and insightful comments. To answer some points:

The phone button is definately there as I boolean joined all the buttons together fairly early on to save having a deep hierarchy effect the render times. It must be directly below the light source. I think I will have to paint that key with a modified shader setting.

Wow. Looked up voxel shaders on the web and found some mighty impressive videos. Mmm, I wish I had a drool icon. :D

I knew the cordite trail didn't look quite right but couldn't figure out why. Now you've pointed it out, I might have a few ideas on how to correct it.

I think your right about not being able to do better with particles. I have been playing around with them the last month or so for my Future Fighter project and it is quite hard to get any effect not to look like it is being created by a particle generator.

Ref shaders and HDRI, just about every surface of note is a Dark Tree and the HDRI images I have used throughout all the images in this particular thread have been lit by the set that Peter posted.

All my 3D work is on the back burner for now as some real time stuff has cropped up. If you were after something in particular Nez, pm me and I'll sort you something out.

Thanks again for the comments guys, much appreciated. :)

Really great work, BB. There was the usual "which 3D App is better" discussion going on over at The Game Creators forums. Somebody threw out a Blender Render...so I gave them your Matrix Render (with credit and a link back to this thread) in return:

Thanks very much Keith, I'm glad you like it. As for the discussion on the GC Forum, LOL, it's not just us lot then.:D BTW, Thanks for the credit and posting a link back to this thread. I took the opportunity to have a nose around the forum and there is some good stuff going on there. So many good forums - so little time.

Anyhows, I will be posting my final, final, render on this thread either tonight or tomorrow.

Right, here we go with the final, final render for my Matrix Phone. Again, all the changes are very slight and are probably lost on a reproduction of this size. However, believe me, when viewed at 1920 x 1200 on a 24" monitor even the slightest change can have a dramatic impact. Changes to the image include a better texture map for the magazine which includes the calibre and NATO stock number stamped into the base, the material settings of some of the shell cases changed to give a greater degree of variety, the cordite trail made more opaque and the "missing" phone button's shader setting altered to reflect the light differently so you can now see it. Phew, job done.

Err...is there still time left to submit this to the SMC? :D:D:D

This small version looks pretty amazing no matter what you say. ;)

How many revisions have you done now? At least a dozen or so right?

Do you have a website with the high res version? Deviantart or something? I'd kinda like to see it. :D

Thanks, robert, I'm glad you liked it. As for getting to see a larger hi-res version...err, sadly I do not think that will be possible. You see yesterday, I posted the phone on Turbo Squid and for me that drew a line under the entire project. The consequence of that was I deleted just about all of it from my hard drive. I had 873 versions of the model, 263 versions of the scene and 94 rendered images. Needless to say that is a lot of storage space. Whilst I have obviously kept a copy of the final scene, I can't just run you off a new render because I have also just deleted most of the HDRI images I used as they were all fairly low-res examples downloaded off the net. The reason for that being I have just treated myself to a new high-res DVD set.

However, what I will do is run a recovery programme on my hard drive overnight and see if I can rescue you something and perhaps send it on to you. Sorry - HTH.

Don't worry about it I was just a little curious, no need to go through all that trouble for me. :)

Hey robert, you've been a keen supporter of this thread for longer than I care to remember, it's the least I can do. :)

Hey Breech Block,

I've been looking through this thread & it's pretty amazing the detailed work you've done here. Love the look of the phone, the smoking bullets, & (my own 2 cents if I may) I definitely like the black grid better under the phone, very sharp looking. ;)It is really impressive how it was developed from scratch using simple primitives. Encouraging for anyone starting out in TS to see the possibilities of what can actually be accomplished when you set your mind to it! Very nice work! :)

Looking at the modeling side of TS is interesting since I've been learning only the WS side. Just finished the viperfish course and just from reading through this thread I've picked up on quite a bit of helpful strategies & procedures.

I definitely recommend (and have) this thread as great reading from beginning to end for any new users who would like to sharpen their modeling skills. Thanks for sharing all the screenshots along the way, also very helpful having the visuals!:)

Best Regards,

Paul
