new virus alert! // General Discussion
Jun 6, 2003, 11:38am
(((((((((((((((((((( McAfee Dispatch )))))))))))))))))))))))
------------------------------------------------------------
** VIRUS ALERT - W32/Bugbear.b at MM **
------------------------------------------------------------
A new variant of the Bugbear virus, W32/Bugbear.b at MM is a
HIGH RISK mass-mailing worm that contains numerous malicious
elements, including a keylogger, network share propagator,
remote access trojan, polymorphic parasitic file infector
and terminator of security software.
Creating privacy and security concerns for consumers, these
elements may allow a remote attacker to access an infected
PC and log all keystrokes, including passwords and personal
information. It also mass-mails itself without the user's
knowledge, spreads across network shares and embeds itself
deep into the infected PC.
Caution: An infected email can come from addresses you
recognize and may contain the following information:
Subject: [content varies]
Body: [content varies]
Attachment: [ standard executable extensions: .exe, .pif and
..scr ]
Current and up-to-date VirusScan users are protected from
this threat.

Yep, its a nice one this one... It ended up in my mailbox too... but there r
always some simple things to avoid virusses to do their job:
- Never open attachments if ur not sure WHAT it is... (not from WHO it is,
cause sender might not know he/she did send it).
- If the mail does not make any sence to ya, just delete it.
- In this case the virus works different: This virus does not contain a
visable attachment. It opens a download dialog screen itself (is hidden in
the html encoding) and askes u to save or open the program it wants to dl...
In that case always remember u didn't ask to dl sumfin so cancel right away,
delete the message, and also empty ur deleted items bin.
- Far out the best protection for me still is: JUST DON'T USE MICROSOFT
OUTLOOK or OUTLOOK EXPRESS!!
Bout (I dunno) 99% of all virusses r written to work with Outlook (Express)
cause outlook reads the content (code) and just starts executing it.
Programs like Netscape don't do that therefor a virus like this one will not
harm ur system at all. Its just being ignored...
- Always contact the sender (if known by u) so he/she can get rid of the
virus to avoid new infections
- Last and most clear one: get urself a decent virusscanner and firewall and
make sure u get ur updates in time...
Hope these simple tips r helpfull enough for ppl who r not computer
experts... prolly there r other and better ways to protect urself, but the
rules above will protect u from almost anything..
