TV writers + tech stuff = AAAH! // General DiscussionkahApr 10, 2002, 3:28pm
Hi, I was watching TV and the BBC had a drama series thing about an Inet
company running a site... story of the episode was that they got domain-"squatters" (someone that registers domainnames that look like another, to catch people typing the wrong URL). They went on to do a WHOIS query, and this is the beginning of the funny part: they pointed at an IP and said it was a contact number! later, to try and trace the owners they did a port-scan on the nameserver... they thought it was illegal, and by only using a portscan they found the OWNER's street address... so, my point is why do these people write a bunch of stupid crap about things they know nothing about, and why do bigtime institutions like the BBC let them do it?? lol KAH sweApr 10, 2002, 5:02pm

You see, they know that 99.9% of people out there (not including you and me)
won't know the difference. They're just trying to amaze people by pulling personal information off the net. It is also included simply to develop the plot, wheather it's accurate or not. It *is* a fiction (tv show), so they can do what they'd like... However, maybe you're mistaken... A whois lookup will give you some personal info, sometimes... Try this one.. http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois?STRING=jtechwebsystems.com&SearchT ype=do That's for my domain name (it's only reserved, not actully working yet..).. But you get my home address. (they spelled it wrong though..lol) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jeremy Booker JTech Web Systems (www.JTechWebSystems.com -- Coming Soon) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [View Quote] pc hamsterApr 11, 2002, 2:26am
Hi everyone:
[View Quote] Because they're just as stupid (not to mention uneducated - Ohh....I guess that must be the same thing). Although being an American, I kinda find it rather fascinating that a source like the BBC would be stupid enough to stoop to the level of Hollywood, CA USA I thought those British were more sophisticated and educated than that. Guess I must be wrong... Cheers :-) Patrick macb z@x.yApr 11, 2002, 3:03am
Which is why I no longer watch TV.
I suppose you can forgive a screen writer for being ignorant about IP addresses. What's REALLY sad is that when they do drama programs on non-technical things, like the Supreme Court, or the White House (the workings of which are SUPPOSED to be taught in high school for heavens sake) they make even more obvious factual errors. Way too many people in the US these days think that these programs are DOCUMENTARIES! Leave it to Hollywood to fill the void left by our educational systems with.... more void. Nothing they do surprises me any more. More thought and education has to be put into these story lines. I suppose
it doesn't matter to most cause most people are too stupid to realize the extreme error in there. They're too dumb. But stations like BBC need to quit teaching people wrong stuff. Now everyone's going to be online getting pissy about it because their stupid drama show said it's illegal :-P [View Quote] kahApr 11, 2002, 3:18pm
lol, don't you think I've been getting people's street adresses using WHOIS
queries before? ;-)) it's the fact that they *pointed* at a nameserver IP that annoys me lol KAH [View Quote] subdeltaApr 12, 2002, 12:42am
Well, not ALL TV is bad. Some of it is damn funny...
<Whales jumping out of the water> Chris: "Dad... what is the blowhole on a whale for?" Peter: "Well son, I can tell you what it's not for. And then you'll understand why I can never go back to Seaworld." (Family Guy) :¬) subDelta [View Quote] I suppose you can forgive a screen writer for being ignorant about IP addresses. well still, if u see something cool on tv, ull automaticly try to figure out
how to do it. and if the tv program tells u how to do it, well then it makes it easier for you to learn... [View Quote] |
