Many times I have wanted to just walk though or fly through a world with
someone but I cant chat and move comfortably at the same time. Usually you
will find me at a complete halt when I chat. All movement stops (except for
the 'wait' gesture). I would like to suggest a feature called "persistent
move" whereby pressing a key combination, i.e. [CTRL]+'m', you would begin
moving forward at a predefined speed 'hands free' of the computer keyboard.
Thus, 2 people could chat while their walk progresses. (Long walks on a
beach with your other half for example) Maybe make the left / right arrow
keys still available so one could turn and continue heading in the new
direction. THEN, avatars like automobiles, and helicopters all of a sudden
take on a new angle. AW Raceway Park with formula 1's all vying for
position. The many 'horse with rider' avatars...a mountain horseback ride
for a group where everyone can still discuss things.....I think it would be
a significant enhancement. A simple re-press of the key combination would
turn the 'persistent move' back off again and the user would stop. I don't
think it should be that difficult to add on.

You can activate "cruise control", as I like too call it, by press
forward+ctrl+alt and releasing at the exact same time. It might take a few
times to get it, but it works, I do it all the time. Its a bug I guess, but
it has its uses :D

There have been a lot of good bugs that were fixed (negative lighting,
colorable texturing, etc.), unfortunately :/

However this at least gives the fingers a rest while you explore the
highways that stretch across AlphaWorld :)

That cruise control has always been there since day 1 of AW. I think it was
put there so the programmers could easily move around in AW while first
programming AW. They just forgot to take it out of the programming. I was
shown this feature about 7 years ago by one of the regular Alpha World
residents. I don't think it was actually meant to be one of the AW features
:) But at times it comes in handy so they should put it in the help files.

Thanks, SW Comit. That is a very useful tip!

Here's another that surprised some folks: Click in the chat window and hold
Ctrl while scrolling the middle mouse button to make the type larger or
smaller.

Anyone know any other little tricks?

Hold numpad 5 down while moving for precision movement. Useful for taking
screenshots. Also stops you instantly if your floating around, or stuck in
a warp movement (or want to abort it).

Also useful for laying down - float up a hair, and click any gesture to get
out of the float sequence mode. After the gesture is done you'll be
standing in the air. Then lay down by looking up or down. Then hold shift
and move towards the ground (no shift = will cause you to land and stand
upright again). Hold numpad 5 down for percision :D

Thats because Numpad 5 by default is mapped to the "Stop" Function,
which stops you falling when pressed and stops you from moving further
when moving, So holding it while moving with the keys makes it try to
stop you, so you get precise movement

As for the Font size, standard Mouse wheel thing, any chat box or
similar can be text resized

Actually the size thing is part of Rich Edit Controls (the ones that display
different fonts and colours etc). It does not work on normal text boxes.

I tend to use precise movement normally (Options/Settings.../General/Precise
Movement) but I see your point. Too bad numpad 5 doesn't slow down avatar
rotation. Precise rotation has been a major problem for me. I can do it
now without much trial and error but it's still labour intensive.

Hehe. You can lay down and half-bury yourself. How gruesome. That will be
handy next Halloween! Thanks, SW Comit!

Hey, here's a question. Occasionally I'll find myself in an "Al Gore"
mode -- stiff as a board. The whole avatar moves around at ground level but
doesn't show any walking movements (swinging arms, etc.). Restarting the
browser fixes it of course but does anyone know a simpler way to fix/avoid
it? (I'm not sure what causes it.)

I just wanted to express my appreciation to SW Comit for announcing this
feature in the newsgroups. I've been using it ever since and it is *very*
useful.

Moving in reverse (so you can view what's been rendered versus what hasn't
yet been rendered), it's convenient for hands-free exploring. You can eat a
sandwich with two hands while watching the world fly by!

Thanks, SW Comit!

btw, you can activate cruise control in both fast and slow modes.
forward + control + alt and releasing at the same time = fast
forward + alt and releasing at the same time = slow
:)
