Hi folks,

I have not a clue why the beta ng is closed to open-beta testers, and
I imagine many of you have not received instruccions what to do.

The page with explanations for beta testers is at:
http://www.activeworlds.com/help/aw35/beta.html

Besides posting here while the beta ng is closed, when you pin down a
bug, please report it to
Beta at activeworlds.com

Thank you!! Hopefully everyone reads this and we can get back to other
posts ...lack of flames, mind boggling posts, debate, etc. was starting to
make me lose interest. This is my only form of entertainment. j/k ;P

Yes, sad. As official beta tester, I was (we were) not informed
either in the official beta ng that:

1) beta had gone public

2) that there was a new browser version 524 (the last version
announced there was 522)

3) we did not get an automatic upgrade from 522 to 524

So for us, it was guess and find out from other ngs and from the
announcement in the universe message.

Alex

PS: the current world server build 57 that you can download in the AW
download pages is 5.3 compliant, even if the installer says it's 3.4.
There is a new terrain feature in this world server to set the
vertical offset of the terrain, this will only work with 3.5 browsers.

Of course, its 3.5 compliant, not 5.3 :)

Seems that besides the terrain offset, there is also a checkbox 'show
water under terrain'. I haven't experimented with that.

[View Quote] Would be great if the water wasn't treated as a giant collection of
polygons and the "show water under terrain" option was well thought out.
Don't get me wrong, not a whole lot of things were well thought out in
this version, but, one one clicks "don't show water under terrain" you
don't expect to see the same results from 3.4. You'd expect that no
water under terrain means that no matter WHERE the water is, if you're
under the terrain and below water height you don't get the "underwater"
visability options. This feature was as sadly dissapointing as the tab
feature. Well played.

Bowen,

As far as I understand it, 3.5 is not supposed to bring much new as
far as functionality goes. The idea was to refashion the user
interface. I also hoped it would be an oppotunity for AWI to get rid
of some BUGS which have been plaguing us since 3.3, and even more with
the additions made in 3.4. AWI is aiming at more fundamental
additions/changes in 4.0, not in 3.5. I think the two changes in
world properties are just 'easy going' ones (no clue about the water
change, I never investigated water), which still can positively
affect.

We shall see :)

The UI has become worse in my opinion. :-\

I'm currently working a project that requires the water feature to be
visible below terrain. 3.5 has corrected the problem and works beautifully
now. Very nice not having it flash out!

IMO, 3.5 was mainly a release aimed at corporate universe owners, plus
fixing some bugs of the previous version. The practical value of 3.5 (in
terms of advantage over 3.4) is sort of limited and brings advantages
and disadvantages.

Considering all the complaints I've read about 3.5, I think I'll wait for
5.3.

[View Quote] [View Quote] I'm surprised they haven't thought of such a function. When developing
a totally new UI, most developers put in a "classic" option to not
alienate users who've grown used to the older style.

Just an example of not thinking things through before implementing it. :-\

[View Quote] Hmm? Those options are already available in 3.5, if you want it to look the old way.

but rather the tabs.

I would tend to agree with you on that Bowen..... they should NOT force you to use "floating tabs" but should have a "classic mode" for that.

Yeah it totally gets in the way. :( Other than that, it's a pleasant
upgrade. Aside from the IRC like qualities of the /me command. I hate
that, it's so annoying.

[View Quote] Ah ;) Yeah it took whole 10 seconds of my life to resize the Tab Controls window
into its old size and move it to the left side where it has been since...

[View Quote] Again, you are misunderstanding, I want it to be PART of the parent
window, not a floater that gets in the way. I have other things open
besides AW. The tab cannot cover the render window and cannot be in any
other part of the view. Otherwise it breaks my use of the software.
Sure, when my other windows are on top it moves out of the way, but
sometimes they're not.
