I was ejected for speaking my mind???

Sep 23, 2001, 9:57pm
Unfortunately, I have seen the news media try to use what I would call less
than ethical tactics to try to persuade their point of view.

Example: One cable news information network that I choose not to name used
a guy that was a former owner of a Perfume company to make their point after
the bombing of the twin towers. I feel the entire interview was bogus - a
form of roll playing. The perfume guy acted overly sensitive to the idea of
war, while the news interview guy acted the opposite - in favor of war. The
news guy seemed logical in every way, and made the former perfume company
owner look like an outcast and a fool. At the end of the interview the news
guy said, "OK, cut off his mike." My husband watched this interview with me
and could not remotely see through the bull, yelling wildly in favor of
having the perfume guy's mike cut off.

I was extremely angry that this was portrayed with a news network I trusted
to be ethical and give me unbiased, truthful, facts and debate. I wonder
how many more people eat up balderdash such as this.

While I 100% agree with you that the news tries to sway our opinion by
throwing information out to us that is questionable, I also feel there is an
appropriate place for debating that - and my opinion is you picked the wrong
place.

Could be why AWNews was formed?

AW Problems.

Sep 23, 2001, 4:41am
j b e l l,

I have had this problem happen to me numerous times over the past few months
and since I do beta testing with other software that might lend to the
problem, I have not reported it to Active Worlds tech support. I did do
some experimenting with it and found I have something on my computer (when I
push CTRL-ALT-DEL) that shows up as "Instantaccess". I believe my scanner
uses this with my Text-Bridge program. I use it to scan very old genealogy
material that has no copyright, so do not wish to uninstall it. When I
end-task "Instantaccess", I am able to sign back into Active Worlds, but
only one more time. If I had to do it twice, I'm back to the hour glass.
If I end-task "Instantaccess" before signing on to my ISP, I am unable to
sign onto my ISP. Frustrating. At least you know you aren't alone.

I needed to update video driver, and I need a faster connection. Since
there is no way to set visibility to 25, I'm running slower. It seems I'm
constantly tinkering around with that visibility thing, the 30 is grayed out
it is always on float. I set it one way and it goes back to float.

I saw somewhere in the NG where sw comit said his computer completely
rebooted while in aw. My computer has done that with 2.something;
therefore, if the involuntary reboot is an AW problem, it was a problem
long before this newest version. It could have been my old ATI Rage video
card causing the problem. I don't recall reboot problems after my new video
card was installed.

sw comit says there's texture tags and I do see that problem, but have not
installed the march 2001 update to my video card so do not know whether this
will take care of that problem or not.

It's wonderful that Roland/AW is able to gives us the absolute latest
software trinkets; however, it goes out-of-date so quickly, it seems to
allow only for those who have the $$$'s to upgrade equipment, computer savvy
individuals and lots of time on their hands to get it working. Almost as
much of a lost cause as keeping spam away.

When the check mark is next to float, it does not stay at an acceptable
range for me. At times it goes up to as much as 100 visibility, to down to
60 at ground zero. I do not want 60 visibility at gz, I want 25, but since
25 isn't available anymore, I must choose 40, since 30 is grayed out.

Each person's computer is different. I've always been able to move around
quickly using 25 most of the time. I'd rather sacrifice graphics for speed.
It's just my preference. I like 40 watt light bulbs in my kitchen and I'm
darn glad General Electric doesn't make them fluctuate to 100 when 'they'
feel it is appropriate. If I want 100 watts, I'll go out and buy another
light bulb.

I want my minimum visibility and Visibility from the menu to both be set to
the absolute lowest and stay there. Not move, not get checked back on
float, not go to 100, nothing. Just stay at 25 frame rate, 25 visibility,
and preferably 30 maximum visibility and the check only move when I change
it manually.

:D

Doesn't work that way on my copy of AW. The check mark moves back to float
when I move around, even if I set it for 40 (the minimum maximum), which
means my max visibility goes out of this world depending upon where I"m at.
Check mauz's post for that explaination under "Visibility (Re: Please
Stop)".

Also, 25 minimum visibility is not an option anymore on my copy of AW. The
best I can do is 30 minimum visibility, 40 max visibility and then when I
teleport around it changes the $#%$ back to float!!!!!!! Which then gets me
back to 100 in certain places. And I notice my visibility is never the
minimum that I set it, it's always whatever the max is set for, which is 40
or more. It slows me up! Give me back my 25 for minimum and give me a way
to lock down the maximum visibility to at least 30. I feel like I'm trying
to run around in water.

Please!

Thank you.

I better understand now why it was programmed this way, but I wish there was
a way to lock down the maximum visibility without it ever trying to readjust
itself. Also, I wish I could have 25 min visibility back.

Thanks for explaining.

Okay, I will try setting the frame rate for 100 and see what happens. At
times I spend a lot of time exploring Alpha World. It's a nuisance trying
to keep the max visibility to stay in one place.

Yeah, 25 m seems gone for good. I use the min visibility when I go to high
download areas (like Cy awards). I set it to the lowest, then as time goes
by, I set it higher and higher while standing in one place to get the full
download. This might not be what everyone else does, but it's what I do and
it worked. Doing this also allows me to get an idea of the objects in a
certain location of a world/area I have not explored (tells me how far away
they are by the number I have set on minimum visibility) and I do this by
viewing the names downloading at the time, which tells me whether it is
something I want to check out.

Thing is, ppl have their own way of doing stuff on their computer and when
something isn't broke, please keep your lunch hooks off of it. :(

It's what President Bush was for the first few months in office according to
Time magazine - then he took a big trip around the world. Now what shall we

3D homepages/Trial Worlds

I saw http://www.activeworlds.com/products/solserver.asp
when I was searching around the other day and from what I see it's $225 a
year because you can't get it without getting the hosting, too. However, I
might be looking at the wrong thing.

VIP's Ejecting the Common Folks in Alpha World

Oct 3, 2001, 4:20am
A scandal erupted late night the other day.

AW employees allowed supposed VIP's access to the eject buttons and at least
one citizen was ejected.

More to come as I have pictures and chat log and it ain't pretty so stay
tuned with sunglasses and stay glued to your chairs.

Alpha World Ground Zero Incident

Oct 5, 2001, 2:14am
AW, Inc. reads this newsgroup regularly. Citizens read it regularly. This
is the forum to discuss these types of situations. I refuse to email them.
They can answer here. If they choose not to do so, I lose a bit of respect
for them as a company that is interested in protecting the liberties of
their citizens and the protocol of their employees, it's as simple as that.
That being said, let's give them a fair amount of time to respond. 5
business days is plenty fair.

3D Homepages/Active Worlds Plug-In

Oct 5, 2001, 8:48pm
Is there a way to put a link on a webpage for the AW Plug-In so the person
can click on the link, download the software, which takes the person
directly to my world, avoiding AWGate? Is this what SolServer is about?
