I had found an excelent detailed video on making screws in 3D, but can't find it anywhere. I'll look again later.

Here's a couple of 3D screw making tutorials, one in Wings the other in 3DMax.

(3D Max)

Might be on one of the other 'puters will have to check them.

Thanks jamsmc but I am not sure if trueSpace 5.2 has similar tools as those shown in the tutorials. Here's another laout which I think is my favourite...

I think this looks fantastic.. well done!

How about letting the light drop off a little in the background, and maybe increase a little in the forground.. so the image gets darker as the eye goes further back?

Thanks for the comments xmanflash. Yes, I will try one with a light variance as you suggest.

I was kinda reluctant to say this, as the rest of the image looks great, but... that spanner still looks weird. When the head is nearest the viewer the handle doesn't look right, & when the handle is nearest the viewer the head doesn't look right somehow. I don't know what could be causing it, but that's just the way it seems.

I think it is because the handle tapers out to the end and is at its widest point where the hole is.

Hmm... I suppose that's possible, but looking at it again, it seems as if the part furthest from the viewer is too small in proportion to the part nearest the viewer.

You're probably right. Here's the mesh.

I think the nuts and bolts could do with being a bit more shiny and reflective.

Screw threads - ooh, remember that well, too! In the image I posted earlier - they were more fun than trying to sort out the nails!

The easiest way I found is to model the body of the screw then make a small triangle poly and use the lathe tool to sweep it around the body or use a helix python script. Probably easier just to go with the lathe tool.

As for the complexity, this will probably reduce the poly count a bit but you can reduce it further by removing details such as the thin cross cut in the head which, although increase the realism in close up, do nothing but up the poly count for the final scene as you can't see them!

Hope that's of some help and I look forward to more progress on this as it's shaping up very well.

Did a bit of googling for a suitable photo, then slapped together a comparison.

rchappell, you may wanna consider using a hardened layered version of the crescent tool. It just might reduce the C&C that your getting on it. :D

Richard your images just seem to be putting more and more images on the floor and doing nothing else...............................

Why not work more on texturing and lighting etc rather than just throwing new objects in one after another and then getting rid of them...........  ;)

I think he's just staying "On Topic"... and thank goodness for that.
I prefer the version with the falloff lighting.
More Stuffe! (I'm still waiting on the chewed up stub of a carpenter's pencil)

Probably that Richard only takes advice from certain people. :)

I dont think this image has proggressed as good as the last "Stuff on the floor" image.:o

maybe if the mood was changed or texturing or lighting instead of throwing objects in one after the other:confused:

Okay, I think I have about done the rounds with this one. Here's an attempt at something a bit off the wall  .

Yes - I think it is probably time to put this project on the back burner for a while!

Turned out well. I suggest to increase brightness and contrast. Right now the colors are a bit....boring.

Here is the image with a little contrast and colour work as Graysho suggests. I think this works okay.

Considering that I am only 2"s on the TrueSpace Evolution scale.....

You did a great job with this project! See you on the roof...

that looks great.

just some personal thoughts.
The picture is still very dark and the tape measure very clean in comparison to the other utilities (which have all a great texture and shader).

Have you used a DOF postprocess filter? I like the subtile DOF.

One thing could add atmosphere if you cast a shadow from a window on the table. The imagine that the workbench stands in a garage or alike and the sun follows through a window from the right side must not match the whole table maybe just the background to split in some optical view zones. The shadow not too strong more blurry.

I used the trueSpace DOF and used paintshop pro only to soften the edge of the sandpaper against the bench in bottom right corner. I used photoshop for a bit of colour manipulation and brightness/contrast but that is all. The whole scene is within a room with horizontal blinds but I couldn't achieve the right effect when trying to get the shadows cast across the bench. Lighting is still the area where I need more practice. Lighting is everything.
